Maltreatment in multiple-birth children.

OBJECTIVE: The rate of multiple births has increased over the last two decades. In 1982, an increased frequency of injuries among this patient population was noted, but few studies have evaluated the increased incidence of maltreatment in twins. The study aim was to evaluate the features of all multiple-birth children with substantiated physical abuse and/or neglect over a four-year period at a major children's hospital. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A Retrospective chart review was conducted of multiple-gestation children in which at least one child in the multiple set experienced child maltreat

Cord blood concentrations of vitamin A in preterm infants.

Plasma vitamin A concentrations were measured in cord blood samples from 56 infants of gestational ages < 33 weeks. Outcome was followed prospectively. Mothers' dietary habits and use of multivitamins during pregnancy were evaluated by means of a questionnaire. Vitamin A concentrations less than 1.05 micromol/l (low) were measured in 22, but levels below 0.7 micromol/l (deficient) only in two cases. The concentrations were not correlated with the infants' gestational ages. Infants with low concentrations were significantly more often multiplets compared to those with normal levels and the vita

Rising cesarean deliveries among apparently low-risk mothers at university teaching hospitals in Jordan: analysis of population survey data, 2002-2012.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean delivery conducted without medical indication places mothers and infants at risk for adverse outcomes. This study assessed changes in trends of, and factors associated with, cesarean deliveries in Jordan, from 2002 to 2012. METHODS: Data for ever-married women ages 15-49 years from the 2002, 2007, and 2012 Jordan Population and Family Health Surveys were used. Analyses were restricted to mothers who responded to a question regarding the hospital-based mode of delivery for their last birth occurring within the 5 years preceding each survey (2002, N = 3,450; 2007, N = 6,307

Chronic hypertension as a risk factor for offspring to be born small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hypertension during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk for birth of small for gestational age offspring. The aim of this study was to determine whether the risk remains after consideration of maternal characteristics and superimposed pre-eclampsia. METHOD: A population-based cohort study based on the Swedish Medical Birth Register 1992-98 and comprising 560 188 women aged 15-44 years with singleton pregnancies including 2,754 women with chronic hypertension. The register contains data of maternal characteristics besides maternal and fetal complications. Multipl

Parental age and Neurofibromatosis Type 1: a report from the NF1 Patient Registry Initiative.

One of the potential etiologies for non-familial Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is increasing parental age. We sought to evaluate recent evidence for parental age effects in NF1 in a large study. Individuals with NF1 and a comparison group from the U.S. general population born between 1994 and 2012 were ascertained from the NF1 Patient Registry Initiative (NPRI) and the National Center for Vital Statistics, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to identify differences between familial NF1, non-familial NF1, and U.S. population subjects in the mean parental ages at the

Impact of preconception and antenatal supplementation with myo-inositol, probiotics, and micronutrients on offspring BMI and weight gain over the first 2 years.

BACKGROUND: Nutritional intervention preconception and throughout pregnancy has been proposed as an approach to promoting healthy postnatal weight gain in the offspring but few randomised trials have examined this. METHODS: Measurements of weight and length were obtained at multiple time points from birth to 2 years among 576 offspring of women randomised to receive preconception and antenatally either a supplement containing myo-inositol, probiotics, and additional micronutrients (intervention) or a standard micronutrient supplement (control). We examined the influence on age- and sex-standa

Comprehensive assessment of the associations between maternal diabetes and structural birth defects in offspring: a phenome-wide association study.

PURPOSE: Our objective was to comprehensively evaluate the risk of a broad range of birth defects among offspring of women with diabetes, overall and stratified by pregestational versus gestational diagnosis, using the phenome-wide association (PheWAS) methodology. METHODS: We performed a registry linkage study of all live births (>6,500,000) and birth defects cases (>290,000) in Texas, 1999-2015. We ascertained diabetes from birth and fetal death certificates. We calculated prevalence rate ratios (PRR) for phenotypes with ≥10 cases among exposed offspring (n = 130). RESULTS: Diabetes was as

Methodology for establishing a population-based birth cohort focusing on couple fertility and children's development, the Upstate KIDS Study.

BACKGROUND: Critical data gaps remain regarding infertility treatment and child development. We assessed the utility of a birth certificate registry for developing a population cohort aimed at answering such questions. METHODS: We utilised the Upstate New York livebirth registry (n = 201,063) to select births conceived with (n = 4024) infertility treatment or exposed infants, who were then frequency-matched by residence to a random sample of infants conceived without (n = 14,455) treatment or unexposed infants, 2008-10. Mothers were recruited at 2-4 months postpartum and queried about their r

Paternal and maternal exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and birth outcomes: a multi-country cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal prenatal exposures to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to adverse birth outcomes. However, few investigations have considered paternal PFAS exposure. We estimated the parent-specific associations of prenatal PFAS exposures with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: This study included 498 couples from the INUENDO cohort recruited at antenatal care visits in Greenland, Poland, and Ukraine during 2002-2004. We measured five major types of PFAS in parental serum during pregnancy. We analyzed three birth outcomes ascertained from medical records, includi

Maternal exposure to bisphenol A and anogenital distance throughout infancy: A longitudinal study from Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most common endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) with a ubiquitous presence. Both animal and human studies have reported the association between maternal exposure to BPA and anogenital distance (AGD) in offspring. However, the results are conflicting and the longitudinal effect is unknown. We aimed to examine the effect of maternal exposure to BPA on AGD in offspring in a longitudinal birth cohort from birth to 1 year of age. METHODS: BPA was assayed using urine samples collected at 12-16 gestational weeks from 982 pregnant participants who later d

Neonatal regulatory behavior problems are predicted by maternal early pregnancy overweight and obesity: findings from the prospective PREDO Study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal overweight/obesity and comorbid hypertensive disorders and gestational diabetes associate with neurodevelopmental delay in the offspring in childhood. We hypothesize that these maternal conditions associate also with the offspring regulatory behavior problems and impact on neurodevelopment via the offspring regulatory behavior. METHODS: A number of 3117 women of the PREDO Study filled in a questionnaire on regulatory behavior problems at the child's mean age of 16.9 days and 2116 of them a questionnaire on developmental milestones at the child's mean age of 42.2 months.

Modifying Levels of Maternal Dietary Folic Acid or Choline to Study the Impact of Deficiencies on Offspring Health Outcomes.

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation plays an important role in the neurodevelopment of offspring. One-carbon (1C) metabolism, which centers around folic acid and choline, as well as other B vitamins, plays a key role during the closure of the neural tube of the developing fetus. However, the impact of these maternal nutritional deficiencies during pregnancy on offspring health outcomes after birth remains relatively undefined. Furthermore, maternal dietary deficiencies in folic acid or choline may impact other health outcomes in offspring - making this a valuable model. This prot

Analysis of incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity among very-low-birth-weight infants in North Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Although significant advances have been made in perinatal care, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) remains a serious complication in prematurely born individuals. There have been limited studies on ROP in Taiwan, and most of those existing reports are outdated. METHODS: This retrospective study included 252 very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Chang Gung Children's Hospital over a 2-year period between July 2005 and June 2007. All infants were examined for ROP according to the guidelines published by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Relationship of maternal high-fat diet to intestinal barrier integrity and disease in offspring.

High-fat diet (HFD) has been demonstrated to negatively affect the exacerbation of chronic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disease, and central nervous system disease. Research has revealed that maternal HFD affects the intestinal barrier integrity of offspring in multiple ways. Offspring not only "inherit" the abnormal gut microbiota induced by maternal HFD, thus having long-term effects on offspring health, but also are profoundly affected by various factors, such as the placental environment, mode of birth, and breast milk nutrition. In this rev
