OBJECTIVE: We wished to determine whether there was size heterogeneity of the parathyroid glands in patients with familial multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (FMEN1) and primary hyperparathyroidism.
DESIGN: At the National Institutes of Health we performed a retrospective analysis of parathyroid gland volume either from initial or repeat parathyroid exploration.
PATIENTS: We studied subjects with FMEN1 and primary hyperparathyroidism.
MEASUREMENTS: The parathyroid gland volume was estimated from recorded orthogonal diameters. Volume could also be estimated conservatively in many glands for

In 63 consecutive patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) a prospective screening study was undertaken for coexistent multiple endocrine neoplasma-(MEN)-syndrome type 1. The screening consisted of a clinical examination, a radiological examination of the sella turcica with skeletal tomography (and in equivocal cases computed tomography), visual field examination by perimetry and a hormonal evaluation including measurements of the serum levels of prolactin, gastrin, pancreatic polypeptide (PP) and subunits of human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG-alpha and -beta). Clinical examination did

BACKGROUND Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 1 (MEN-1) is a rare autosomal-dominant disorder, caused by MEN-1 gene mutations, leading to tumors in multiple endocrine organs, classically the parathyroid glands, the anterior pituitary, and the pancreatic islet cells. Although primary hyperparathyroidism is usually the earliest manifestation, growth hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas rarely present as the initial clinical feature, potentially delaying recognition of the syndrome. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old woman presented with acromegalic features and hypercalcemia. Laboratory testing a

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare inherited tumor syndrome, characterized by the development of multiple neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in a single patient. Major manifestations include primary hyperparathyroidism, gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and pituitary adenomas. In addition to these main NETs, various combinations of more than 20 endocrine and non-endocrine tumors have been described in MEN1 patients. Despite advances in diagnostic techniques and treatment options, which are generally similar to those of sporadic tumors, patients with MEN1 have a poor l

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by heterozygous germline mutations in the tumor suppressor gene MEN1, which encodes a nuclear protein, menin. MEN1 is characterized by the combined occurrence of tumors involving the pituitary gland, pancreatic islets, and parathyroid glands. Additionally, patients with MEN1 often exhibit adrenal tumors. Although most MEN1-associated tumors are benign, malignant lesions arising in these endocrine organs have been reported. Additionally, malignant diseases of non-endocrine organs concomitant with MEN1 have also

A 62-year-old woman presented with a mass on the left side of the neck. Biochemical testing revealed primary hyperparathyroidism. Further, a prolactinoma was detected, and the patient's son and daughter also had primary hyperparathyroidism, indicating that the patient had multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). Neck ultrasonography revealed several cystic nodules (≤ 30 mm) that appeared to be adenomatous. After parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation, the largest cystic mass, in the left lower thyroid lobe, was pathologically diagnosed as a functioning parathyroid cyst, and all laborato

OBJECTIVE: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is less well recognized in Asian countries, including Japan, than in the West. The clinical features and optimal management of MEN1 have yet to be clarified in Japan. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features of Japanese patients with MEN1.
DESIGN/PATIENTS: We established a MEN study group designated the 'MEN Consortium of Japan' in 2008, and asked physicians and surgeons to provide clinical and genetic information on patients they had treated. Of 680 registered patients, 560 were analysed.
MEASUREMENTS: Clinical and gene

We report herein the rare case of a 33-year-old man found to have a multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)-associated carcinoid tumor in the thymus. A chest roentgenogram demonstrated an asymptomatic anterior mediastinal mass, 7 cm in diameter, and ultrasound-guided percutaneous Tru-Cut biopsy revealed a carcinoid tumor of the thymus. An extended thymectomy was performed through a median sternotomy and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a thymic carcinoid tumor, which was mainly encapsulated with locally invasive growth into the pleura. Despite the absence of a family hist

Multiple endocrine neoplasia-type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant familial cancer syndrome characterized by parathyroid hyperplasia, pancreatic endocrine tumours and pituitary adenomas. Here, we report a patient with a history of insulinoma who developed secondary infertility as a further symptom of the disease. When he was first examined at the age of 36 years, he complained of weakness, reduced libido and impotence. Laboratory evaluation revealed non-obstructive azoospermia and hyperprolactinaemia. In contrast to sexual activity and serum prolactin, semen quality did not significantly resp

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) remains controversial. In addition, the rarity of MEN 2A-related hyperparathyroidism has not allowed for a separate strategy for this condition. This study examines our surgical experience with MEN 1- and MEN 2A-related hyperparathyroidism and attempts to define a rational therapeutic approach to each.
METHODS: Between 1970 and 1991, 124 patients underwent surgery for MEN-related hyperparathyroidism at our institution. Primary cervical explorations were performed in 84 patients wi

A consistent degree of chromosome instability was found in cultured lymphocytes and in fibroblasts derived from skin biopsies of three patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). In both tissues, there was a significant increase in chromosomal breakage. Dicentrics and tricentrics, rings, translocations, deletions, acentric fragments, and presumptive double minutes were the most frequent abnormalities in lymphocytes. The fibroblasts of two patients had large clones consisting of trisomy 7 and trisomy 18 cells, respectively.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease with an estimated prevalence of 2-10:100 000. The main locations of tumors are parathyroid glands (HPT), gastroenteropancreatic tract (GEPT), and anterior pituitary gland (PT). The aim of our investigation was to describe the phenotype and genotype of Argentinian patients with MEN1.
METHODS: A total of 68 index patients diagnosed with at least two of the three main tumors or one tumor and a relative with MEN1, and 84 first-degree relatives were studied. We sequenced the coding region (exons 2-1

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by mutations in the MEN1 gene, which encodes the menin protein. If a patient has the MEN 1 phenotype in the absence of mutations in the MEN1 gene, the condition is classified as a phenocopy of this syndrome. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the function of menin, its role in the oncogenesis of the endocrine glands is still being elucidated. Due to its key role in physiological and pathological processes, the assessment of the menin expression can provide valuable inf

The multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) locus has been previously localised to 11q13 by combined tumour deletion mapping and linkage studies and a 3.8-cM region flanked by PYGM and D11S97 has been defined. The zinc finger in the MEN1 locus (ZFM1) gene, which has also been mapped to this region, represents a candidate gene for MEN1. The ZFM1 gene, which consists of 14 exons, encodes a 623-amino acid protein and exons 2, 8 and 12 encode the putative nuclear localisation signal, a zinc finger motif, and a proline-rich region, respectively. We have investigated these potentially functional

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominantly inherited syndrome. MEN1 is characterized by the presence of functioning and nonfunctioning tumors or hyperplasia of the pituitary gland, parathyroid glands, and pancreatic islet cells. In addition, MEN1 carriers can have adrenal or thyroid tumors and non-endocrine tumors, such as lipomas, angiofibromas, and leiomyomas. Although leiomyoma is not a major component of MEN1, it is thought to occur more frequently than expected. However, there has been no report of a case of MEN1 with leiomyoma in Korea so far.
