Experimental evaluation of mink and Apodemus speciosus in the Echinococcus multilocularis life-cycle in Hokkaido, Japan.

The epizootiological status of mink (Mustela vison) as definitive hosts and Apodemus speciosus as intermediate hosts in the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis in Hokkaido, Japan, were evaluated by orally inoculating mink with protoscoleces, and A. speciosus with eggs of the cestode, respectively. No tapeworms were recovered from the alimentary tract of the mink, and no hydatid cysts were recovered from the viscera of the egg-inoculated A. speciosus. We conclude that mink and A. speciosus cannot serve as definitive hosts and intermediate hosts of E. multilocularis, respectively, in Hok

Reinvestigation of the ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon of Hymenolepis nana (Cestoda, Cyclophyllidea), parasite of the small intestine of Rattus rattus.

Spermiogenesis in Hymenolepsis nana begins with the formation of a differentiation zone. This is limited at the front by arched membranes, is surrounded by cortical microtubules associated with 12 crested-like bodies, and contains a single centriole made up of doublets. The distal centriole gives rise to a flagellum that grows at the same pace as the cortical microtubules. Migration of the nucleus takes place after the formation of the flagellum. It is followed by the separation of the old spermatid from the residual cytoplasm. The mature H. nana spermatozoon is filiform and lacks mitochondria

A comparative assessment of efficacy of three anticoagulant rodenticides.

Results are presented of feeding tests carried out with three common anticoagulant rodenticides viz., coumatetralyl, fumarin and warfarin on three common species of commensal rodents i.e., Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Bandicota bengalensis. All three species of rodents were susceptible to anticoagulant rodenticides. However, the action of these compounds in B. bengalensis was comparatively slow. Coumatetralyl was found to be the most effective rodenticide followed by fumarin and warfarin. Liquid baits of these compounds are more effective in comparison to food baits.

A histopathological survey of aged Praomys (mastomys) natalensis.

This histopathological study shows that Mastomys develops a wide variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions with age. In comparing neoplastic lesions of Mastomys with those generally found in mice and rats, Mastomys is more or less unique with respect to the development of lymphoepithelial thymomas (40%), parathyroid adenomas (11%), prostatic adenocarcinomas (5%), and gastric carcinoids (4%) and the absence of brain, lung, and mammary tumors. Of the nonneoplastic lesions, prostatic (38%), thymic (12%) and parathyroid (11%) hyperplasia, and moderate to severe generalized degenerative joint

Neuromeric Organization of the Microbat Brain: Conserved and Distinct Regional Features.

Myotis myotis and Tadarida brasiliensis are both microbat species belonging to the Vespertilionidae and Molossidae families, respectively. Our goal is to determine if the 85-million-year evolutionary divergence between microbats and the Muridae family (mice and rats) has led to significant regional variations in the brain. However, the 34-million-year split between M. myotis and T. brasiliensis serves as in-group control to contextualize the larger divergence with rodents. Using the prosomeric framework, main brain derivatives from each neuromeric partition were compared between these two micr

The Australian Hydromyine Rodents-Their Interspecific Diversity and Reproductive Biology: A Review.

Australia has a diversity of mammals, with approximately 60 extant species being native rodents in the Family Muridae. Two major groups occur, the Rattus species and the Hydromyini. Investigations on their reproductive biology have shown that all species of Rattus have large scrotal testes which produce abundant spermatozoa. The sperm head contains a single apical hook in which a nuclear extension occurs. In female Rattus, the litter size varies from about 4 to 12 across the species. In sexually mature male hydromyine rodents, marked interspecific differences occur in relative testes mass from

Bertiella anapolytica Baylis, 1934 (Cestoda, Anoplocephalidae) in Rattus spp.: morphology, distribution and evolutionary history.

The present study describes the morphology and phylogenetic position of two specimens of Bertiella Stiles et Hassall, 1902 (Cestoda, Anoplocephalidae) from Rattus tanezumi (Temminck) (Muridae) from Đồng Tháp Province in southern Vietnam. The phylogenetic analysis was based on sequences of the large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (28S). The specimens were described and shown to be morphologically similar to Bertiella anapolytica Baylis, 1934 from Rattus spp. from Indonesia (Sumatra, type locality) and Australia, except for a few quantitative differences. The identification was confirmed by the phyl

Interrelationship of soil moisture and temperature to sylvatic plague cycle among prairie dogs in the Western United States.

Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, is a flea-borne disease that is endemic in areas throughout the world due to its successful maintenance in a sylvatic cycle, mainly in areas with temperate climates. Burrowing rodents are thought to play a key role in the enzootic maintenance as well as epizootic outbreaks of plague. In the United States, prairie dogs (Cynomys), rodents (Muridae), and ground squirrels (Spermophilus) are susceptible to infection and are parasitized by fleas that transmit plague. In particular, prairie dogs can experience outbreaks that rapidly spread, which can lead to extirpa

Fleas of Shrews and Rodents in Rural Lowland Taiwan.

Fleas transmit a variety of pathogens to humans but are relatively understudied in comparison to mosquitoes and ticks, including in Taiwan, where fleas in rural lowlands have never been systematically surveyed. In total, 700 fleas of four species were collected from 1,260 shrews and rodents at nine counties across lowland Taiwan. Nosopsyllus nicanus Jordan (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae) and Xenopsylla cheopis Rothschild (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) were the most abundant flea species (79.0 and 14.6% of total fleas, respectively); the former was largely limited to the islets, while the latter was

Leptospira spp. in rodents and shrews in Germany.

Leptospirosis is an acute, febrile disease occurring in humans and animals worldwide. Leptospira spp. are usually transmitted through direct or indirect contact with the urine of infected reservoir animals. Among wildlife species, rodents act as the most important reservoir for both human and animal infection. To gain a better understanding of the occurrence and distribution of pathogenic leptospires in rodent and shrew populations in Germany, kidney specimens of 2973 animals from 11 of the 16 federal states were examined by PCR. Rodent species captured included five murine species (family Mur

The dynamics of supernumerary tooth development are differentially regulated by Sprouty genes.

In mice, a toothless diastema separates the single incisor from the three molars in each dental quadrant. In the prospective diastema of the embryo, small rudimentary buds are found that are presumed to be rudiments of suppressed teeth. A supernumerary tooth occurs in the diastema of adult mice carrying mutations in either Spry2 or Spry4. In the case of Spry2 mutants, the origin of the supernumerary tooth involves the revitalization of a rudimentary tooth bud (called R2), whereas its origin in the Spry4 mutants is not known. In addition to R2, another rudimentary primordium (called MS) arises

Ectoparasites of murids in peninsular Malaysia and their associated diseases.

A considerable number of rat-borne ectoparasite studies have been conducted since the early 1930s in the Malayan Peninsula (now known as peninsular Malaysia). The majority of studies were field surveys and collections of specimens across the region, and were conducted primarily to catalogue the ectoparasite host distribution and discover novel species. This has generated a signification amount of information, particularly on the diversity and host distribution; other aspects such as morphology, host distribution and medical significance have also been investigated. Amongst the four main groups

The comparative gastrointestinal morphology of five species of muroid rodents found in Saudi Arabia.

Meriones rex (King jird), Meriones libycus (Libyan jird), Acomys dimidiatus (Eastern spiny mouse), Acomys cahirinus (Egyptian spiny mouse), and Dipodillus dasyurus (Wagner's dipodil) are five species of small rodents of the superfamily Muroidea with distributions in Eastern Africa, Egypt, and the desert regions of the Arabian Peninsula. Water is scarce in these regions and may result in relatively low-digestible food. The aim of the present study is to describe and compare the gastrointestinal tract morphology and morphometry of these five species in order to elucidate whether morphology is in

Perpetuation of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia lusitaniae by lizards.

To determine whether the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia lusitaniae is associated with lizards, we compared the prevalence and genospecies of spirochetes present in rodent- and lizard-associated ticks at a site where this spirochete frequently infects questing ticks. Whereas questing nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks were infected mainly by Borrelia afzelii, one-half of the infected adult ticks harbored B. lusitaniae at our study site. Lyme disease spirochetes were more prevalent in sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) and common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis) than in small rodents. Although subadult ti

Distribution of Trypanosoma congolense in infected multimammate rats (Mastomys coucha): light and electron microscopical studies.

In an attempt to determine whether Trypanosoma congolense occurs both within and outside the blood vessels in an infected animal host, multimammate rats (Mastomys coucha) were infected with T. congolense and samples from spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow, liver, kidney, lungs, brain, heart, intestines, ovaries and testes were collected. The tissue samples were fixed and processed for light and electron microscopical examination. In all the tissues examined, trypanosomes were found only within the lumen of large and small blood vessels, capillaries and sinuses. It is concluded that following ent
