Infection of wild-caught wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis) with tick-borne encephalitis virus.

The distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is expanding to Western European countries, including the Netherlands, but the contribution of different rodent species to the transmission of TBEV is poorly understood. We investigated whether two species of wild rodents native to the Netherlands, the wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus and the yellow-necked mouse Apodemus flavicollis, differ in their relative susceptibility to experimental infection with TBEV. Wild-caught individuals were inoculated subcutaneously with the classical European subtype of TBEV (Neudoerfl) or with TBEV-NL, a ge

Prevalence of chigger mites and Orientia tsutsugamushi strains in northern regions of Gangwon-do, Korea.

The present study aimed to survey the prevalence of chigger mites and Orientia tsutsugamushi (O. tsutsugamushi) infection in the northern regions of Gangwon-do, Korea. From early February to early June 2015, a total of 17,050 chiggers were collected from striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius, in Cheorwon-gun, Hwacheon-gun, Yanggu-gun, and Goseong-gun, which are well-known endemic areas of scrub typhus in Korea. The chiggers were analyzed using molecular genomic methods, as previously described. Among the 7,964 identified chiggers, the predominant species was Leptotrombidium pallidum (76.9%), f

Breathing patterns and CO2 production in adult spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus).

The spiny mouse (Acomys) is a precocial mammal with unique regenerative abilities. We used whole-body plethysmography to describe the breathing patterns and CO2 production (VCO2) of adult spiny mice (n = 10 male, 10 female) and C57BL/6 mice (n = 9 male, 11 female). During quiet breathing, female but not male spiny mice had lower tidal volumes and CO2 production vs. C57BL/6 mice. During extended hypoxia (30 min), male and female spiny mice decreased VCO2 and tidal volume to a greater degree than C57BL/6 mice. During an acute hypoxic-hypercapnic respiratory challenge (10% O2, 7% CO2), male and f

Host Competency of the Multimammate Rat Mastomys natalensis Demonstrated by Prolonged Spirochetemias with the African Relapsing Fever Spirochete Borrelia crocidurae.

African multimammate rats, Mastomys natalensis, are widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and live in close association with humans. In West Africa, numerous field studies have shown these animals may be naturally infected with the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia crocidurae, the primary cause of tick-borne relapsing fever in this region of the continent. However, naturally infected individual rats have never been examined over time; therefore, the true host competency of these rats for this spirochete is unknown. Therefore, using animals from an established laboratory colony of M. natal

Sperm abnormalities in high- and low-dose-rate Gamma-irradiated Korean dark-striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius coreae.

To evaluate the in vivo effects of low-dose-rate (0.7 mGy h(-1)) gamma radiation, abnormal shapes of sperm in the caudal epidydimus of Apodemus agrarius coreae (A. a. coreae) were used. The six categories of abnormal forms (amorphous heads, blunt hooks, excessive hooks, two heads and tails, folded tails and short tails) of sperm were observed eight days after gamma irradiation (0, 0.5, 1 and 2 Gy) with a high dose rate (0.8 Gy min(-1)) and a low dose rate. The frequency of total abnormal sperm gradually increased starting from 0.5 Gy after high-dose-rate radiation. Blunt hooks and short tails

A new Syphacia species (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) collected from Bunomys spp. (Rodentia: Muridae) in central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Syphacia (Syphacia) rifaii sp. n. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is described from endemic Bunomys chrysocomus and Bunomys prolatus (Rodentia: Muridae) on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The new species is closest morphologically to Syphacia (Syphacia) sulawesiensis , parasitic in Rattus xanthurus from Sulawesi Island, by having large vesicular lateral alae in males, but is readily distinguished by having a smaller body, a round cephalic plate in both sexes, the absence of lateral alae in females, a longer relative distance between excretory pore and vulva, and smaller eggs. Syphacia (S.) rifaii is surmise

Discordant antibody and cellular responses to Pneumocystis major surface glycoprotein variants in mice.

BACKGROUND: The major surface glycoprotein (Msg) of Pneumocystis is encoded by approximately 50 to 80 unique but related genes. Msg diversity may represent a mechanism for immune escape from host T cell responses. We examined splenic T cell proliferative and cytokine as well as serum antibody responses to recombinant and native Pneumocystis antigens in immunized or Pneumocystis-infected mice. In addition, immune responses were examined in 5 healthy humans. RESULTS: Proliferative responses to each of two recombinant Msg variant proteins were seen in mice immunized with either recombinant prote

Lymphocyte apoptosis in murine Pneumocystis pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Apoptosis of lymphocytes is important in the termination of an immune response to infection but has also been shown to have detrimental effects in animal models of systemic infection and sepsis. We sought to characterize lymphocyte apoptosis in an animal model of pneumonia due to Pneumocystis murina, an infection localized to the lungs. METHODS: Control mice and mice depleted of CD4+ lymphocytes were inoculated with Pneumocystis. Apoptosis of lung and spleen lymphocytes was assayed by flow cytometry and PCR assay of apoptotic proteins. RESULTS: In control mice, apoptosis of lung

Biofilm formation by Pneumocystis spp.

Pneumocystis spp. can cause a lethal pneumonia in hosts with debilitated immune systems. The manner in which these fungal infections spread throughout the lung, the life cycles of the organisms, and their strategies used for survival within the mammalian host are largely unknown, due in part to the lack of a continuous cultivation method. Biofilm formation is one strategy used by microbes for protection against environmental assaults, for communication and differentiation, and as foci for dissemination. We posited that the attachment and growth of Pneumocystis within the lung alveoli is akin t

Idiopathic necrotizing dermatitis: current management.

OBJECTIVES: To identify and demonstrate necrotizing dermatitis in infancy; an uncommon, puzzling syndrome, in which anecdotal reporting and personal experience indicates that one third of cases may require skin grafting. Much informed discussion about the pathogenesis of this distressing syndrome centres on the role of spider envenomation; and in particular on the speculative role of the Australian White-tailed spider, Lampona cylindrata. METHODS: We present here six cases of necrotizing dermatitis treated surgically at the Royal Children's Hospital and Mater Children's Hospital in Brisbane o

Taphonomy and palaeoecology of the late Pleistocene to middle Holocene small mammal succession of El Harhoura 2 cave (Rabat-Témara, Morocco).

The relationship between local and global climatic variations and the origin and dispersal of Homo sapiens in Africa is complex, and North Africa may have played a major role in these events. In Morocco, very few studies are specifically dedicated to small fossil vertebrates, and neither taphonomic nor palaeoecological studies have been undertaken on these taxa, particularly in archaeological contexts. The late Pleistocene to middle Holocene succession of El Harhoura 2 cave, situated in the region of Témara, yields an exceptionally rich small vertebrate assemblage. We present the results of a

Active surveillance for antibodies confirms circulation of lyssaviruses in Palearctic bats.

BACKGROUND: Palearctic bats host a diversity of lyssaviruses, though not the classical rabies virus (RABV). As surveillance for bat rabies over the Palearctic area covering Central and Eastern Europe and Siberian regions of Russia has been irregular, we lack data on geographic and seasonal patterns of the infection. RESULTS: To address this, we undertook serological testing, using non-lethally sampled blood, on 1027 bats of 25 species in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and Slovenia between 2014 and 2018. The indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detected rabies virus

Detection of Balamuthia mandrillaris DNA by real-time PCR targeting the RNase P gene.

BACKGROUND: The free-living amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris may cause fatal encephalitis both in immunocompromised and in - apparently - immunocompetent humans and other mammalian species. Rapid, specific, sensitive, and reliable detection requiring little pathogen-specific expertise is an absolute prerequisite for a successful therapy and a welcome tool for both experimental and epidemiological research. RESULTS: A real-time polymerase chain reaction assay using TaqMan probes (real-time PCR) was established specifically targeting the RNase P gene of B. mandrillaris amoebae. The assay detected

First records of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in voles and selected Apodemus species in Serbia.

BACKGROUND: Voles and Apodemus mice are recognized as important hosts for numerous parasites and pathogens. Understanding the occurrence of zoonoses, key host characteristics, and the factors influencing their population dynamics and distribution is essential for predicting disease occurrence and assessing the risks of transmission and spread. Determining the role of voles and field mice, in maintaining Borrelia burgdorferi, s.l. in the environment clarifies its transmission during tick activity periods and highlights the need for timely monitoring and control measures. RESULTS: We examined t

Broad-spectrum molecular detection of zoonotic agents in wild micromammals: a nationwide surveillance study in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Wild micromammals serve as key hosts for diverse zoonotic pathogens, maintaining these agents in natural ecosystems and facilitating potential spillover to humans. Assessing pathogen prevalence in micromammals is essential for evaluating zoonotic risk and informing public health interventions. METHODS: In this study, we applied the TaqMan Array Card (TAC) platform, a high-throughput molecular diagnostic tool, to micromammal-borne zoonotic pathogen surveillance. From October to November 2022, a total of 160 wild micromammals, including Apodemus agrarius (Striped field mouse) (90.6,

Leptin promotes social context-specific increase in advertisement song effort of male Alston's singing mice.

Animal display behaviors, such as advertisement songs, are flashy and attention grabbing by necessity. In order to balance the costs and benefits of such signals, individuals must be able to assess both their own energetic state and their social environment. In this study, we investigated the role of leptin, a hormonal signal of high energy balance, in regulating the vocal advertisement display of Alston's singing mouse (Scotinomys teguina). To ask how internal cues of energy availability are integrated with external social cues, we manipulated perception of energy balance using exogenous lept

Experimental infection of wild Mastomys natalensis with the parasitic nematode Trichuris mastomysi.

Trichuris muris infections in laboratory mice underpin current understanding of host-parasite interactions, yet the extent to which these insights apply to natural systems remains largely untested. In this study, we experimentally infected wild-caught Mastomys natalensis with Trichuris mastomysi under controlled conditions. Mice were assigned to either a single high-dose infection or repeated low-dose exposure. Larval infection success and intensity were assessed 21 days post-infection. Infection success was high in both exposure groups, and infection dose strongly influenced parasite burden,
