Laryngeal Manipulation for Dysphagia with Muscle Tension Dysphonia.

The purpose of the article is to describe the use of laryngeal manipulation as a treatment for dysphagia resulting from excessive paralaryngeal muscle tension and to identify the patients likely to have symptomatic improvement. This is a retrospective single-center case series. A retrospective review identified patients from 2007 to 2013 with laryngeal manipulation for muscle tension dysphagia in an academic Otolaryngology practice. Subjects with dysphagia not attributable to an anatomic cause who attended therapy at least one time were included in the study. The primary outcome of the study w

Effects of various diets on gastric tone in the proximal portion of the stomach of horses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess gastric tone in the proximal portion of the stomach in horses during and after ingestion of 4 diets (2 diets of grain and 2 diets of hay). ANIMALS: 6 adult horses. PROCEDURE: A polyester bag with a volume of approximately 1,600 ml was inserted through a gastric cannula into the proximal portion of the stomach of each horse. Internal pressure of the bag was maintained at 2 mm Hg by use of an electronic barostat, and changes in bag volume were recorded before, during, and after horses consumed diets of grain or hay. Each horse was fed 0.5 and 1.0 g of grain/kg and 0.5 and

[The effect of histamine and histamine H1 and H2 receptor blockers on the tone of the longitudinal muscles in the human appendix].

The aims of this study were to determine whether the effect of histamine on a smooth musculature of the human appendix is mediated by histamine H1-receptors only or whether histamine H2-receptors are involved, as well. The obtained results indicate histamine increases tonus in musculature; however, histamine H1-receptor antagonist (promethazine) decreases tonus. Histamine H2-receptor antagonist (cimetidine) has caused a mild increase in tonus of musculature what indicates that it has a certain intrinsic activity. By blocking histamine receptors with H1 and H2 antagonists which were used either

Mechanical characteristics of the cat pylorus.

In vitro force-length curves of rings from the gastroduodenal junction were obtained in standard tyrode solution, in tyrode with 140 mM KCl, and in calcium-free tyrode with 5 mM sodium EDTA, to determine basal, total, and passive forces, respectively. Active force was obtained as a difference between total and passive forces. Basal, total, passive, and active forces were higher for pyloric rings than for duodenal and antral rings. Furthermore, in the pylorus the force-length curves were shifted to the left along the length axis due to a narrowing at the gastroduodenal junction. Pressure-diamet

[Osteoporosis in the disabled].

Osteoporosis is a well-known complication of paralytic diseases. We investigated 11 patients with chronic spinal cord injury who have been paralyzed for 20 years or more. History of fracture was searched in these 11 patients. Mineral density in the lower limbs was measured, and the bone metabolism was examined. Of the total of 8 fractures, 87.5% occurred in the relatively low muscle tonus group. Patients showed decreased bone mineral density of the femoral neck, and this was negatively correlated with period of paralysis. One female patient showed an abnormal rise in bone absorption markers. Muscle Tone Regulation and Bruxism in Chronic Stress: Pathophysiological Links to Tooth Fractures and Dental Hard Tissue Pathology.

Anxiety disorders and chronic stress are the most common types of mental disorder. According to the WHO, more than 359 million people worldwide suffered from these conditions in 2021. The function of mastication and the masticatory muscles undergo significant changes under the influence of a disturbed psychoemotional state. This manifests as their parafunctional activity, accompanied by increased tone and damage to elements of the dentofacial system, including increased tooth wear, chipping, cracks, and fractures. Attention to this problem is growing annually among researchers in both dental a

Muscle Tone Assessment under General Anesthesia for Sjögren-Larsson Syndrome and Spasticity.

INTRODUCTION: Study of muscle tone in individuals with severe spasticity (Modified Asworth Scale - MAS:3) under general anesthesia can confirm or rule out the eventual necessity of the impending spasticity relieving ablative neurosurgery by observing the hypertonia reduction and passive range of motion expansion. Therefore, what we measure under muscle relaxants is practically a fixed deformity. CASE PRESENTATION: The study was performed on a girl with Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, presenting with icthyosis and spastic diplegia. Proposed intervention was Dorsal Rhizotomy. Under general anesthesia

[Anaesthesia and vasomotor tone during CPB: intravenous anaesthetics].

Anaesthesia during CBP is frequently provided using intravenous anaesthetic drugs, particularly propofol. The effects of the different drugs have been studied during CPB. These drugs have an arterial and venous vasodilator effect during CPB which is dose dependent and is more pronounced for propofol. High doses of propofol or thiopental reduce cerebral blood flow but provide no additional neurological protection.

Comparison of the effects of nitric oxide donors and calcium channel blockers on the intrinsic myogenic tone of sheep isolated internal anal sphincter.

BACKGROUND: Chronic anal fissure is associated with considerable pain and anal hypertonia. Numerous clinical studies attest to the effectiveness of individual nitro-containing drugs and organic calcium channel blockers in this condition but there are few comparative studies. METHODS: Isolated segments of sheep internal anal sphincter were prepared for isometric tension recording. The effect of various drugs on myogenic tone was examined in the absence or presence of sodium orthovanadate (SOV), an agent used to mimic anal hypertonia by increasing myogenic tone. RESULTS: All the drugs tested p

An in vivo guinea pig preparation for studying the autonomic regulation of airway smooth muscle tone.

The autonomic nervous system plays a primary role in regulating airway smooth muscle tone. Here, we describe the development of an in vivo guinea pig model that permits systematic studies of the autonomic control of airway smooth muscle. The model is based on preparations previously described and utilizes measurements of isometric tension in a perfused segment of extrathoracic guinea pig trachea in situ. It has the advantage that the autonomic innervation to the tracheal segment under study can be physiologically or pharmacologically isolated and studied independently from other mechanisms reg

Electromyography before and after surgery for hip deformity in children with cerebral palsy. A comparison of clinical and electromyographic findings.

Twenty-three ambulatory children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy were evaluated clinically and by electromyography before and after hip-muscle surgery. The stretch tests originally designed to distinguish specific muscle tightness and spasticity were found to be non-specific when tested by electromyography. Ambulatory electromyograms using needle electrodes and telemetry generally showed decreased activity in the released muscles and, on occasion, changes in activity in muscles not operated on. These unanticipated changes after release may explain some of the unpredictability of results o

Muscle hypertonus after intravenous suxamethonium: A clinical problem.

Hypertonus of masseter and chest wall muscle in one patient following intravenous suxamethonium is reported. Subsequent investigations including electromyography and muscle biopsy with in vitro pharmacological testing failed to reveal any abnormality to account for the response. The clinical problems presented to the anaesthetist when suxamethonium-induced hypertonus occurs are discussed. The relationship between a hypertonic reaction to suxamethonium and neuromuscular disease (including myotonic disorders and the malignant hyperpyrexia myopathy) is considered.

[Distal myasthenia gravis: case report].

We report the case of a 30-year-old woman with a 7-year history of distal lower limbs weakness that evolved to upper limbs weakness. On neurological examination, she presented normal cranial nerves, bilateral quadriceps and feet interosseous atrophy, normal muscular tonus, muscular weakness more severe in dorsal feet interosseous and anterior tibial, and decreased deep tendon reflexes. Repetitive nerve stimulation of the ulnar and fibular nerves showed a decrement greater than 10% of the compound muscle action potential. Antibody against acetylcholine receptor titer was positive. Myoclonus in the critically ill: Diagnosis, management, and clinical impact.

Myoclonus is the second most common involuntary non-epileptic movement in intensive care units following tremor-like gestures. Although there are several types of myoclonus, they remain underappreciated, and their diagnostic and prognostic associations are largely ignored. This review discusses clinical, electrophysiological, neuroanatomical, and neuroimaging characteristics of different types of myoclonus in critically ill adults along with their prognostic impact and treatment options. Myoclonus is characterized by a sudden, brief, and sometimes repetitive muscle contraction of body parts, o

Changes in the behavioral reactions of experimental animals after repeated treatment and withdrawal of a combination of phenobarbital and carbamazepine.

The present study investigates changes in behavioral reactions, muscle tonus and staticokinetic reflexes of white rats after repeated applications and subsequent discontinuation of a phenobarbital-carbamazepine combination. These changes were compared to those induced by the two preparations when given alone. The study found a reduction in the orientation capacity of animals treated with single applications and repeated dosages (continuing up to four days) of the anticonvulsants phenobarbital and carbamazepine. Withdrawal of the pharmaceuticals is followed by significant changes in the motor a

Polyneuronal innervation of single muscle fibers in cat eye muscle: inferior oblique.

Single muscle fibers with multiple axonal endplates (multiply innervated fibers) are normally present in adult extraocular muscles (EOMs), while most other mammalian skeletal muscles contain fibers with a single myoneural junction. Recent findings by others led us to investigate for the presence of polyneuronal innervation (innervation of a single muscle fiber by >1 motoneuron) in the inferior oblique (IO) muscle of pentobarbital anesthetized cats. The IO muscle nerve branches, as they coursed through the orbit, were further divided for independent or simultaneous electrical stimulation with b

Changes in the mechanical properties of myotonometric muscles following manual therapy during archery: a single-group, single-session repeated measurement study.

In precision sports like archery, muscle control, fatigue reduction, and efficient movement execution are essential to an athlete’s performance. This study aimed to (i) analyze variations in muscle tone, stiffness, elasticity, creep, and relaxation at baseline, after archery shooting, and at a final post-session time point obtained after a standardized 30-min rest period followed by a manual-therapy session, and (ii) examine the relationship between acute fatigue after 100 shots and the magnitude of subsequent post-session change scores (not treatment effects). Twenty experienced archery athle

Mechanisms underlying rhythmic locomotion: interactions between activation, tension and body curvature waves.

Undulatory animal locomotion arises from three closely related propagating waves that sweep rostrocaudally along the body: activation of segmental muscles by motoneurons (MNs), strain of the body wall, and muscle tension induced by activation and strain. Neuromechanical models that predict the relative propagation speeds of neural/muscle activation, muscle tension and body curvature can reveal crucial underlying control features of the central nervous system and the power-generating mechanisms of the muscle. We provide an analytical explanation of the relative speeds of these three waves based
