Cross-platform public judgment in a cultural heritage crisis: A topic modeling study of the Nanjing Museum donated-artifact controversy.

Crises involving cultural institutions increasingly unfold across multiple platforms, where the same controversy is interpreted through different content formats, interaction structures, and community norms. This study develops distributed accountability as a function-based framework for examining how public demands for sanction, explanation, and relational repair are organized across platform environments. The study analyzes 64,349 publicly visible top-level comments from Douyin, Bilibili, and Rednote, organized into three event-anchored source-content groups concerning the Nanjing Museum don

Use of biogenic and abiotic elemental selenium nanospheres to sequester elemental mercury released from mercury contaminated museum specimens.

Mercuric chloride solutions have historically been used as pesticides to prevent bacterial, fungal and insect degradation of herbarium specimens. The University of Manchester museum herbarium contains over a million specimens from numerous collections, many preserved using HgCl(2) and its transformation to Hg(v)(0) represents a health risk to herbarium staff. Elevated mercury concentrations in work areas (∼ 1.7 μg m(-3)) are below advised safe levels (<25 μg m(-3)) but up to 90 μg m(-3) mercury vapour was measured in specimen boxes, representing a risk when accessing the samples. Mercury vapou

MUSCULAR SARCOCYSTIS INFECTIONS IN HORSES IN NORTH AMERICA: ETIOLOGY, CLINICAL DISEASE, PERSONAL PERCEPTION, AND DEPOSITION OF SPECIMENS IN THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM.

Uncertainty shrouds the number and identity of the species of Sarcocystis infecting horses in the United States. Horses are intermediate hosts for Sarcocystis fayeri, for which the domestic dog is the definitive host. Clinical signs and lesions associated with S. fayeri are not defined. Granulomatous myositis, especially involving the chest and dysphagia, is one of the clinical presentations associated with S. fayeri infections. Whether S. fayeri is the sole species that forms sarcocysts in equine muscles in the United States is not clear. Little is known of the molecular diagnosis of Sarcocys

The Impact of Whole-Animal Fluid Preservation on the Observed Gut Microbiome of Vertebrates: Implications for the Use of Museum Specimens in Microbiome Research.

The vertebrate gut houses diverse microbial communities that provide insights into their host's ecological and evolutionary histories. Nevertheless, microbiome research has not been distributed equally across host taxonomy, geography and timescales. The millions of fluid-preserved specimens stored in natural history museums worldwide represent a potentially untapped resource for microbiome information. However, it is unknown how fluid preservation and long-term storage change the composition and diversity of the original microbial community across a variety of host taxa. Here, we present the l

Historic specimen of calvaria showing late-stage syphilitic involvement from the Vernon-Roberts Museum of The University of Adelaide (Australia).

In this case study, we discuss a rare specimen of syphilis from the Vernon-Roberts Museum of The University of Adelaide. The anatomical specimen has historical and medical implications of syphilis in Australia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Given the lack of preserved clinical information, the case study underscores the importance of integrating paleopathological evidence with social and historical contexts in understanding disease expression and progression in past populations.

Human-centric participation paradigm: exploring the enjoyment experience of cultural heritage virtual museum based on system usability and VR technology.

As cultural heritage digitisation accelerates, virtual museums have emerged as powerful platforms for enriching public engagement with culture. Yet, the underlying psychological mechanisms that drive user enjoyment in these environments remain underexplored. Drawing on the Hedonic Motivation System Adoption Model (HMSAM) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study develops an integrated theoretical framework to explain how system usability shapes user enjoyment through five core psychological constructs: perceived usefulness, curiosity, joy, control, and immersion. It also investigates the

The first de novo genome assembly and annotation of a green-blooded skink (Prasinohaema aff. flavipes) from a historic museum sample.

The scincid genus Prasinohaema represents the only group of amniotes to possess green blood, resulting from the accumulation of the bile pigment biliverdin. Recent phylogenetic analyses have shown Prasinohaema to be polyphyletic with four independent origins for green blood. It is unknown why this trait has evolved in multiple instances and how Prasinohaema species are able to tolerate such high concentrations of a cytotoxic bile pigment. Here, we report the first de novo genome assembly and annotation for a green-blooded skink, Prasinohaema aff. flavipes, which was sequenced from an ethanol-p

Innovative Learning in Anatomy Education: Assessing the Impact of Low-Cost 3D Deep Learning Anatomical Models in Museum-Based Instruction.

BACKGROUND: Anatomy education traditionally relies on cadaveric dissection and static models, which can be costly, ethically complex, and limited in interactivity, hindering students' ability to grasp clinical correlations and spatial relationships. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a virtual anatomy museum approach, leveraging low-cost, interactive 3D models and deep learning, to enhance clinical reasoning and anatomical understanding among medical undergraduate students. METHODOLOGY: In this non-experimental, observational study, designed as a proof of concept, 40 undergraduate stud

Traumatic fractures in an early 19th century museum skeleton suggest the homicide of an old Munich character: the history of "Finessensepperl" (Finesse Joseph).

The well preserved skeleton of Joseph Huber, a very well-known historical character of the 19th century Munich, also nicknamed "Finessen-Sepperl", is the starting point of the reconstruction of life and death of this historical individual. He was known as a postilion d´amour (love's messenger) of the Royal Bavarian capital with numerous comments and anecdotes and a few biographical sketches that indicate he remained well until the last few years of his life where requests for his duties lessened. The skeleton shows a small-sized male individual with almost complete loss of teeth, but otherwise

Suffocation by massive blood aspiration due to intraoral gun-shot injury -the oldest museum specimen in the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Belgrade.

The forensic museum specimen presented in this paper is the oldest specimen in the collection of the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Belgrade. It comprises a jar containing six cervical vertebras connected to a small amount of dry connective tissue. During the autopsy, the cervical part of the spine was completely opened posteriorly: the base of the odontoid process of the axis was crushed, but the transverse and posterior longitudinal ligaments and the spinal cord were intact. Attached to the specimen, there is a partly cored piece of lead which looks like a severely deformed handgun projec

When cultural meanings defy expectations: cultural incongruence, epistemic curiosity, critical reflection, and cultural perspective taking in museum education.

INTRODUCTION: Museums increasingly serve as important settings for cultural learning, yet little is known about whether exhibits whose culturally contextualized meanings contradict visitors' initial expectations can support deeper understanding. Drawing on transformative learning theory, this research examines theoretically connected relationships within a proposed staged framework linking cultural incongruence, epistemic curiosity, critical reflection, and cultural perspective taking. It also investigates the need for cognition as a boundary condition shaping the relationship between critical

A newly discovered Hystrix primigenia specimen from the Kemiklitepe collection at Ege University Natural History Museum: insights into paleobiogeography in Eurasia.

Porcupines, members of the Hystricidae family, represent a unique group of herbivorous mammals. This study details the identification of a newly discovered mandible fragment of Hystrix primigenia, along with a right cheek tooth series from the middle Turolian Kemiklitepe-A fossil locality. While Hystrix fossils are found in numerous localities, the materials are often limited to a few dental fragments or isolated teeth, posing challenges to systematic investigations. The examination of this lower tooth series prompted a comprehensive review of all H. primigenia findings across Eurasia, sheddin

Preservation fluids of heritage anatomical specimens - a challenge for modern science. Studies of the origin, composition and microbiological contamination of old museum collections.

Anatomical museums preserve specimens of great historical value and undiscovered scientific potential. However, frequently these collections lack documentation of the techniques of preparation and the composition of preservative substances (conservation principles). This poses a huge problem for the care and preservation of these materials, more so because understanding this issue requires knowledge of fundamentals from different scientific disciplines. The aim of the research was to obtain information about the composition of substances used to preserve historic specimens, as well as to condu

An integrated risk assessment model for indoor air quality impacts on museum exhibits and human health using microclimatic indices and AgNPs treatment.

The quality of indoor air in museums directly influences the conservation of exhibits made of organic materials, but also the health of visitors, employees and restorers. Thus, monitoring the microclimate and identifying non-invasive solutions to limit its impact becomes essential for the protection of movable cultural heritage. Thus, this study aims to monitor ten indicators of indoor air quality and their impact on exhibits, visitors and employees in a museum in Romania. The data obtained were analysed using specific indexes to accurately assess the indoor microclimate risk for both human he
