Novel immunomodulatory peptides identified from Mytilus edulis: Molecular docking, immunomodulatory effects on RAW264.7 cells and molecular dynamics simulation studies.

This study sought to screen novel immunomodulatory peptides from Mytilus edulis hydrolysates (MEHs) after simulated gastrointestinal digestion (SGD) and to clarify their regulatory mechanisms. Nano-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) identified 99 peptides with molecular weights ranging from 186.10 to 1197.59 Da. In silico screening combined with molecular docking analyses led to the selection of five novel candidates: FPR, FRE, KFP, LLPK, and PDRM. Among these, FPR and LLPK exhibited the most potent immunomodulatory activities, significantly enhancing RAW264.7 macrophage

Combined exposure to nano-TiO₂ and carbamazepine exacerbates reproductive toxicity in mussels Mytilus coruscus by disrupting steroid hormone homeostasis.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO₂) and carbamazepine (CBZ) are both emerging contaminants of concern in coastal environments. Current monitoring data indicate that nano-TiO₂ occur in nearshore seawater affected by land-based inputs, and CBZ is persistently detected in estuarine and nearshore waters; therefore, these contaminants may co-occur at a regional scale. In this study, the thick-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus) was used as a model organism. Nominal concentrations of nano-TiO₂ (100 μg/L) and CBZ (10 μg/L) were applied in single and combined exposure experiments over 14 days. Pa

Coastal Mussel (Mytilus spp.) Soft Tissues as Bioindicators of Methylmercury: Exploring the Relationship Between Condition Index and Methylmercury Concentrations.

We investigated total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in coastal mussels (Mytilus spp.) sampled from the Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy and evaluated the relationship with condition index (CI). THg concentrations were low in sediment (mean THg = 5.15 ± 2.11 ng/g dw; n = 6) and soft tissues (mean THg = 62.3 ± 13.7 ng/g; mean MeHg = 13.2 ± 6.3 ng/g; n = 57). The THg in tissues had no significant relationship with CI (Rs= -0.205, p = 0.126). MeHg in tissues were significantly and negatively correlated with condition index (Rs = -0.361, p = 0.006) indicating that healthier mussels

Effects of polystyrene micro/nanoplastics on the feeding behavior, oxidative stress, and accumulation of diarrhetic shellfish toxins in the mussel Mytilus unguiculatus.

Polystyrene micro/nanoplastics (PS-MNPs) and microalgal toxins are widely distributed in marine environments. However, the impact of MNPs exposure on the accumulation of dissolved microalgal toxins in cultivated shellfish remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of PS-MNPs on the physiological status and diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) accumulation in the filter-feeding bivalve Mytilus unguiculatus. Results demonstrated that exposure to PS-MNPs significantly altered the grazing rates, condition index, and oxidative stress responses of mussels. Specifically, MNPs at a c

Metabolic effects of diet containing blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and blue mussel-fed salmon in a mouse model of obesity.

Alternative feed ingredients for farmed salmon are warranted due to increasing pressure on wild fish stocks. As locally farmed blue mussels may represent an environmentally sustainable substitute with a lower carbon footprint, we aimed to test the potential and safety of substituting fish meal with blue mussel meal in feed for Atlantic salmon. Salmon were fed diets in which fish meal was partially replaced with blue mussel meal in increments, accounting for up to 13.1 % of the ingredients. Fillets from the salmon were subsequently used to prepare obesity-promoting western diets for a 13-weeks

Polycyclic aromatic compound and trace metal element residues in Mytilus mussels at marine wildlife hotspots on the Pacific coast of Canada.

The Pacific coast of Canada has a rich marine fauna and a growing human population with increasing potential for pollution releases, but there is currently little overlap between marine wildlife hotspots and ongoing biomonitoring efforts for less bioaccumulative contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) and trace metals (metals). We surveyed PACs and metals at marine bird breeding colonies in coastal British Columbia in 2018 by analyzing chemical residues in the soft tissue of bivalve Mytilus sp. mussels collected from stations (n = 3) at seven sites. The concentration of sum PA

In vitro biotransformation of OA-group and PTX-group toxins in visceral and non-visceral tissues of Mytilus chilensis and Ameghinomya antiqua.

Lipophilic marine toxins (LMTs) are made up of multiple groups of toxic analogues, which are characterised by different levels of cellular and toxic action. The most prevalent groups in the southern Pacific zone are: a) okadaic acid group (OA-group) which consists of okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX-1); and, b) pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) group which consists of pectenotoxin-2 (PTX-2). The main objective of our study was to examine in vitro biotransformation of OA-group and PTX-group in the tissues of two endemic species of bivalves from southern Chile; blue mussels (Mytilus chilensis) a

Exposure to a nanosilver-enabled consumer product results in similar accumulation and toxicity of silver nanoparticles in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

The incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in commercial products is increasing rapidly. The consequent release of AgNPs into domestic and industrial wastewater raises environmental concerns due to their anti-microbial properties and toxicity to non-target aquatic organisms. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of nanArgen™ (Nanotek S.A.), a AgNP-enabled consumer product, in the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis. Two environmentally relevant concentrations of nanArgen™ (1 and 10 μg/L) were tested in vivo for 96 h, and Ag was quantified in mussel soft tissue

Early ecotoxic effects of ZnO nanoparticle chronic exposure in Mytilus galloprovincialis revealed by transcription of apoptosis and antioxidant-related genes.

Recently, China became one of the largest nanomaterial markets in the world. The wide use of ZnO nanoparticles in a number of products implies an increasing release in marine environment and consequently the evaluation of the potential effects upon marine organisms largely cultured in China for commercial purposes, such as invertebrate bivalves is a current need. To this aim, survival, bioaccumulation, and transcription pattern of key genes, p53, PDRP, SOD, CAT, and GST, involved in DNA damage/repair and antioxidation, in Mytilus galloprovincialis digestive gland, exposed to ZnO NPs (<100 nm)

Possible site of action of 2-methylserotonin in inducing relaxation of acetylcholine-induced contraction in the molluscan (Mytilus edulis) smooth muscle.

1. The present study investigated the presence of 5-HT3 receptor using 2-methylserotonin (2-Me-5-HT) in the smooth muscle of Mytilus ABRM. 2. 2-Me-5-HT relaxed the acetylcholine-induced contraction in a dose-dependent manner ranging from 10(-6) to 3 x 10(-4) M (pD2 = 5.55 +/- 0.32). 3. 2-Me-5-HT-induced relaxation was antagonized by 3 x 10(-5) M ketanserin in a competitive manner (pA2 = 5.14 +/- 0.1), but not by cypropheptadine, mianserin, MDL 72222 or ICS 205-930 at a concentration of 3 x 10(-5) M. 4. 2-Me-5-HT (3 x 10(-4) M) did not alter the content of cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP in the ABRM.

Crystal structure of MytiLec, a galactose-binding lectin from the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis with cytotoxicity against certain cancer cell types.

MytiLec is a lectin, isolated from bivalves, with cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines that express globotriaosyl ceramide, Galα(1,4)Galβ(1,4)Glcα1-Cer, on the cell surface. Functional analysis shows that the protein binds to the disaccharide melibiose, Galα(1,6)Glc, and the trisaccharide globotriose, Galα(1,4)Galβ(1,4)Glc. Recombinant MytiLec expressed in bacteria showed the same haemagglutinating and cytotoxic activity against Burkitt's lymphoma (Raji) cells as the native form. The crystal structure has been determined to atomic resolution, in the presence and absence of ligands, sho

Global warming and biological adaptation: Thermal priming buffers the impact of heatwaves on the reproductive health of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Human excessive exploitation of natural resources has undermined the fragile balance of many ecosystems, accelerating global warming at unprecedented rates. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) threaten organisms, whose reproductive cycle is temperature-dependent. The impact of climate change was evaluated on reproductive health of the gonochoric Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Specimens were divided into a control group, maintained constantly at 17 ± 1 °C, and groups pre-adapted separately to 28, 30 and 32 °C for 2 h, returned to the control temperature for 24 h, and then exposed to heat s

Personal care products as a potential source of aquatic pollution: Effect of polyvinyl alcohol on physiological and antioxidant responses in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

A high percentage of the broad spectrum of contaminants in aquatic environments is represented by personal care products (PCPs). Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is contained in the formulation of many of these products. The extensive use of PVA caused the annual release of over 65.000 tons into the environment, constituting 1.2 % of particles in the Mediterranean Sea. For these reasons, the study aimed to investigate, for the first time in bivalve species, the possible cytotoxicity implications on non-target species, involved in the human food chain, caused by exposure to two different concentrations

Seasonal anti-androgen activity in the brackish Baltic waters in relation to the gene expression profiles of the blue mussel Mytilus trossulus.

Endocrine disruptors (EDs) in aquatic environments pose significant risks to marine organisms, affecting critical physiological processes such as reproduction, metabolism, and stress responses. The Baltic Sea, with its high anthropogenic pressure and unique ecological conditions, is particularly vulnerable to EDs contamination. Our study aimed to evaluate the endocrine-disrupting, metabolism-impairing, and cytotoxic effects of water samples collected seasonally from a sewage treatment plant outlet in the Gulf of Gdańsk (Poland). Simultaneously, the gonadal transcriptome profiles of Mytilus tro

Infestation of the blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis by the copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus and its relation to size, density, and condition index of the host.

The copepod Pseudomyicola spinosus infests marine mussels and other commercial bivalve species. There is a lack of information on the infestation process and on its relationship to size, density, and health of the host. To obtain this information, an infestation study of the copepod in Mytilus galloprovincialis in field conditions was carried out. Results showed that the intensity of infestation is closely related to host size [F((2,810))=198.33; p<0.001], but not to density [F((2,810))=0.96; p<0.38]. After an initial colonization of the host by the infested copepodite stages, an equilibrium b
