The polymicrobial nature of the oral cavity and claws of cats diagnosed by mass spectrometry and next-generation sequencing.

Close contact between cats and humans increases the risk of transmission of zoonotic pathogens, through bites and scratches due to the complexity of microorganisms in the oral and nail microbiotas of felines. This study investigated the presence of bacteria and fungi in the oral cavity and claws of 100 apparently healthy cats using conventional and selective microbiological culture media, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) and mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Furthermore, antimicrobial susceptibility testing of bacteria isolates was performed by disc diffusion method. In total, 671 bacteria

Habit reversal training for body-focused repetitive behaviors: a practical guide for the dermatologist.

Habit reversal training (HRT) is a clinically effective treatment for body-focused repetitive disorders (BFRDs) such as trichotillomania, onychophagia, and dermatillomania. Despite many dermatology providers knowing the term HRT, very few understand what HRT is and how it actually works. In this article, we give a detailed explanation of HRT and walk the reader through a six-session HRT protocol. We will briefly discuss adjunct interventions for BFRDs, including pharmacological approaches. We aim to make dermatologists more comfortable in offering basic HRT within their clinics and to close th

Dermatology and conditions related to obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Patients with cutaneous disorders may have obsessive-compulsive symptoms but treatment for these symptoms has been limited. Advances in our understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorders have led to the concept of a spectrum with similar phenomenology, underlying neurobiology, and psychopharmacotherapeutic response. Many of these disorders, which include trichotillomania, neurotic excoriation, onychophagia, body dysmorphic disorder, and dermatitis artefacta may respond to specific therapeutic interventions.

[Dermatitis artefacta, onychophagia and trichotillomania in mentally retarded children and adolescents].

Systematic dermatovenorological examination included 457 mentally retarded children and adolescents institutionalized at the Institute for Mental Rehabilitation of Children and Adolescents "Novi Sad" in Veternik near Novi Sad. All examined subjects were classified into 3 groups: 1. severely retarded--immobile, 2. severely retarded--mobile, and 3. moderately retarded. Dermatoses were found in 70 (15.32%) of the subjects, the most frequent being: onychophagia in 34 (7.44%), dermatitis artefacta in 17 (3.72%) and trichotillomania in 14 (3.06%) cases. Onychophagia and trichotillomania occurred sim

Trichotillomania in childhood.

Several aspects of trichotillomania in childhood are described and discussed. Case records of twenty-one children not older than 15 years of age, who were seen in the previous 5 years, were examined. The female/male ratio was 2.5:1 (fifteen girls and six boys); the age range was 2 to 15 years. Although trichotillomania may, at first sight, often impress as an apparently inexplicable persistent habit, further analysis shows that this symptom often develops in a climate of psychosocial stress in the family, e.g., hospitalizations of child or mother, the additional stress inherent in moving to a

A wearable sensors dataset for stress & boredom associated activity recognition.

This article presents a dataset of activities associated with stress and boredom obtained through wearable sensors. Data was collected from 40 right-handed participants aged 20 to 25, evenly split between males and females. Each individual wore a smart device on their dominant arm's wrists to facilitate the capture of data. This dataset covers five activities associated with stress and boredom, namely, smoking, eating, nail biting, face touching, and staying still. These activities were selected for their potential psychological implications and captured in an uncontrolled environment to mimic

Trichotillomania comorbidity in a sample enriched for familial obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study addresses the strength of associations between trichotillomania (TTM) and other DSM-IV Axis I conditions in a large sample (n = 2606) enriched for familial obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), to inform TTM classification. METHODS: We identified participants with TTM in the Johns Hopkins OCD Family Study (153 families) and the OCD Collaborative Genetics Study, a six-site genetic linkage study of OCD (487 families). We used logistic regression (with generalized estimating equations) to assess the strength of associations between TTM and other DSM-IV disorders. RESULTS:

Emotion regulation and other psychological models for body-focused repetitive behaviors.

The term body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) refers to a group of recurrent, problematic, destructive behaviors directed toward the body, including hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting. Individuals with BFRBs report diminished control over the behavior and a range of physical and psychological sequelae. Recent research on psychological models for BRFBs has investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER), and many authors in this area have conceptualized problematic body-focused behavior as a maladaptive ER mechanism. This article organizes and reviews the empirical research on th

A clinical study of seven cases of trichotillomania in Singapore.

The aims of this paper were: to study the profile of trichotillomania cases referred to a child guidance clinic in Singapore, to identify potential risk factors and to study the management and outcome of these cases. This is a descriptive, retrospective study of all cases of trichotillomania presenting to the clinic between January 1996 and January 1998. There were 7 cases seen in a 2-year period which is less than 1% of new cases seen at the clinic. The female to male ratio was 1.33:1 with a mean age of 9.3 years. All cases met the DSM-IV criteria for trichotillomania. All 6 pulled their hair

"Shame on you": The impact of shame in body-focused repetitive behaviors and binge eating.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting, have been associated with difficulties in emotion regulation. Studies have suggested that aversive emotions are important triggers for impulsive behaviors such as BFRBs and binge eating. In particular, shame has been hypothesized to be a key emotion before and after these behaviors, but no experimental studies yet have investigated its impact on BFRBs. We aimed to evaluate the role of shame in BFRB and binge eating episodes and the presence of shame following these behaviors. Eighteen women with BFR

Abnormal perceptual sensitivity in body-focused repetitive behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Several compulsive grooming habits such as hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting are collectively known as body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs). Although subclinical BFRBs are common and benign, more severe and damaging manifestations exist that are difficult to manage. Researchers have suggested that BFRBs are maintained by various cognitive, affective, and sensory contingencies. Although the involvement of cognitive and affective processes in BFRBs has been studied, there is a paucity of research on sensory processes. METHODS: The current study tested whether adults wi

Lack of effect of anticonvulsant topiramate on methamphetamine-induced stereotypy and rewarding property in mice.

The effects of topiramate, a structurally novel anticonvulsant, on the methamphetamine (METH)-induced expression of stereotypy and conditioned place preference (CPP) in male ICR mice were investigated. After a single administration of METH (10 mg/kg, i.p.), mice showed stereotyped behaviors with a plateau level 25 min after drug challenge. Pretreatment with topiramate (1, 10, and 100 mg/kg, i.p.) 30 min prior to METH challenge had no effect on the expression frequency of stereotypy, compared with saline challenge. No differential effects of topiramate on METH-induced stereotyped behavior (that

Effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors on methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice and rats.

In male ICR mice, a single intraperitoneal administration of methamphetamine (METH) (10 mg/kg) induced stereotyped behavior such as continuous sniffing, circling, and nail biting, reaching a plateau level 20 min after the injection. Subcutaneous pretreatment with clorgyline, a monoamine oxidase (MAO)-A inhibitor, at a dose of 0.1 mg/kg 2 h prior to the drug challenge significantly decreased the initial (first 20 min) intensity of stereotypies and increased the latency to onset. The effect was not observed with either higher doses of clorgyline (1 and 10 mg/kg) or l-deprenyl, a MAO-B inhibitor,

The relationship of obsessive-compulsive disorder to possible spectrum disorders: results from a family study.

BACKGROUND: The familial relationship between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and "obsessive-compulsive spectrum" disorders is unclear. This study investigates the relationship of OCD to somatoform disorders (body dysmorphic disorder [BDD] and hypochondriasis), eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa), pathologic "grooming" conditions (e.g., nail biting, skin picking, trichotillomania), and other impulse control disorders (e.g., kleptomania, pathologic gambling, pyromania) using blinded family study methodology. METHODS: Eighty case and 73 control probands, as well as

Prevalence of malocclusion in 4-6 year old Brazilian children.

The prevalence of malocclusion and the relationship with oral habits in Brazilian children from two public primary schools was evaluated. The sample was composed of 112 children with mean age of 61 +/- 6.67 months. The results demonstrated the presence of malocclusions in 75.8% (n = 85). The oral habits was related by 34.8% (n = 39). The open bite was the most prevalent malocclusion in the studied population and the oral habits was the decisive etiological factor.

Quo vadis DSM-6? An expert survey on the classification, diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of body-focused repetitive behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Many conditions we now call body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) have been subject to research for several decades, most notably trichotillomania and skin picking. However, the American Psychiatric Association did not combine these conditions into a single category, body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBDs), until the fifth edition of the DSM (2013). Several aspects of the disorder remain uncertain and controversial. For example, ongoing debate surrounds which specific conditions fall under this diagnostic category and how to best differentiate BFRBs from conditions
