A new approach to nasomaxillary complex type of nasal bone fracture: Clip operation.

PURPOSE: Nasal bone fractures comprise almost 40% of all facial injuries. Most are initially reduced using closed reduction. This study introduces a newly developed method, the clip operation via endonasal approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The operation was performed in these patients by a single surgeon extensively experienced in facial bone fractures. An absorbable mesh plate made into a clip was used for fixation after open reduction via the endonasal approach. No screws were used for fixation. Nasal packing was removed the first day after surgery; aluminum splinting was removed the third w

Nasal airway changes in bone-borne and tooth-borne rapid maxillary expansion treatments.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to determine the presence of a correlation between the nasal airway skeletal transverse dimension and air intake changes in rapid maxillary expansion treatments. METHODS: Sixty-one patients with maxillary transverse deficiency (11-17 years old) were randomly allocated into three groups (two treatment groups - tooth- [hyrax] or bone-borne [miniscrew-implant-based] expander - and one control group). Cone-beam computed tomography scans (CBCT) were obtained from each patient as well as acoustic rhinometry (AR) readings. Specifically, in AR, airway volume up to minimum cr

Refinement treatment of nasal bone fracture: A 6-year study of 329 patients.

BACKGROUND: The reliability of X-ray radiography for diagnosing nasal bone fractures (NBFs) remains controversial. Recent studies show that, for determining the orientation and location of the displaced/depressed fracture, nasal sonography is as accurate as facial computed tomography. This retrospective study compared conductor-assisted nasal sonography (CANS) to conventional diagnostic tools and reported subjective patient satisfaction and discomfort after closed reduction combined with tube technique. METHODS: This retrospective study reports the results of 329 refinement treatments for nas

Necrosis of maxilla, nasal, and frontal bone secondary to extensive rhino-cerebral mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection caused by zygomycetes. This fungus can cause a variety of infections in human beings, particularly in the uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Zygomycetes impinge into the vascular network, resulting in thrombosis and necrosis of the surrounding hard and soft tissues. The infection begins in the nose and paranasal sinuses due to inhalation of fungal spores and spread to orbital and intracranial structures either by direct invasion or through the blood vessels. Sinus mucormycosis is often accompanied by a poor prognosis and a high mortality

Reliability of fetal nasal bone length measurement at 11-14 weeks of gestation.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone assessment has been incorporated into Down syndrome screening in first trimester. Several studies have established the normal reference values for fetal nasal bone length in the first trimester, which were found to be varied by population. However, the study on reliability of nasal bone length measurement was limited with contradictory results. This study aimed to investigate the reliability of fetal nasal bone length measurement at 11-14 weeks of gestation in the Thai population. METHODS: A total of 111 pregnant women at 11-14 weeks of gestation attending for the routi

Role of intra-operative ultrasound-guided reduction of nasal bone fracture in patient satisfaction and patient nasal profile (a randomized clinical trial).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the benefits of intra-operative ultrasonic guidance in the management of isolated nasal bone fractures. A prospective, randomized, controlled, double blinded study was designed. Sixty-eight patients who had isolated fracture nose were treated by either a simple closed reduction or by ultrasound-guided reduction (34 patients each) with a follow up for an average of 4.5 and 5.5 months, respectively. Post-traumatic and post-reduction nasal profiles were compared (by blinded photographer), and patient's satisfaction was analyzed after reduction in both g

A Novel Balloon Catheter Dilation Apparatus for the Treatment of Depressed Nasal Bone Fracture.

The nasal bone fracture is the most common type of facial bone fracture. Closed reduction with metal reduction instrument is commonly conducted for the treatment of a depressed nasal bone fracture which often leads to iatrogenic injury. In this article, a new balloon catheter dilation apparatus for nasal bone fracture is hypothesized by the authors. This device aims to repair nasal bone fracture via dilated balloons under fractured nasal bone and used as nasal internal packing system after operation. Compared with the conventional approach, it is proposed that this balloon dilation apparatus c

Prevalence and Distribution of Lesions in the Nasal Bones and Mandibles of a Sample of 144 Riding Horses.

Restrictive nosebands are used in equestrian sports to hold the bit in place and reduce mouth-opening, a response that can attract penalties in some sports and is thought to reduce the rider's control of the horse. Sustained pressure from such tightly fitted (restrictive) nosebands denies normal behaviour and thus, causes frustration and distress that can jeopardise horse welfare. It also may push the cheek against the molar teeth, compress soft tissues including blood vessels and nerves, and possibly induce chronic changes to underlying bone. This study of mature cavalry horses (n = 144) was

Facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the cranial, nasal, and mandible bones.

The conditions of facial asymmetry are caused by congenital or acquired diseases, and several unclassifiable syndromes with unknown etiologies exist. In this report, a case of facial asymmetry with enlarged frontal sinus and hyperplasia of the frontal cranial bone and nasal bone is presented. Although the etiology of the facial malformation was clear, it was thought that the cause of the enlarged frontal sinus was related to the unidentified bony hyperplasia and facial asymmetry related to hemimandibular hyperplasia.

Management of avulsive injuries of the nasal bones: review of the literature and three case reports.

Blunt contusions, lacerations, and avulsion-type trauma are the most often reported nasal injuries sustained in motor vehicle accidents. The nasal skeleton and soft tissues are frequently involved and may require surgical repair of the injuries. The primary reconstruction often requires the use of autogenous grafts, and secondary revision surgery may be necessary. The treatment may require a multidisciplinary surgical team or a single surgeon who knows how to manage the injury. Optimally, the reconstruction of nasal bone avulsions is performed primarily, using autogenous graft materials. This

Comparison of the Outcomes of Closed Reduction Nasal Bone Fractures With a Surgical Navigation System.

BACKGROUND: The most prevalent form of facial bone fractures is nasal fractures. The surgical procedures used for these fractures are relatively simple, but complete correction is not easy because the nasal bone is small and identifying the fracture site by palpation is difficult. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of intraoperative surgical navigation systems in nasal bone fracture surgery through a prospective analysis. METHODS: Between February 2019 and July 2019, 25 navigation-assisted closed reductions of nasal fractures were performed. Preoperative computed tomography images w

Ultrasonography in the diagnosis of nasal bone fractures: a comparison with conventional radiography and computed tomography.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic efficacy of ultrasonography (US) with radiography and multi-detector computed tomography (CT) for the detection of nasal bone fractures. Forty-one patients with a nasal bone fracture who underwent prospective US examinations were included. Plain radiographs and CT images were obtained on the day of trauma. For US examinations, radiologist used a linear array transducer (L17-5 MHz) in 24 patients and hockey-stick probe (L15-7 MHz) in 17. The bony component of the nose was divided into three parts (right and left lateral nasal
