A biophysical tipping point in soil texture guides the sustainable design of utility-scale solar parks.

Utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) development can generate ecological co-benefits in drylands, but whether these benefits persist across engineered microhabitats and soil backgrounds remains unresolved. This study examined 109 plots in the Talatan alpine dryland solar park to distinguish local configuration effects from texture-dependent heterogeneity in soil-quality responses. An optimized and interpretable Soil Quality Index (SQIOPT) was derived using CatBoost, while regression, SHAP, and Causal Forest analyses were used to quantify local microhabitat effects, identify the dominant global pred

Linking the adoption of service-based business models to circular economy performance: the moderating role of supply chain practices.

Service-based business models (either product-, use-, or result-oriented) have gained attention as a way for manufacturing firms to transition toward a circular economy and foster the implementation of closing-the-loop strategies such as reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling. However, the relationship between the adoption of service-based business models and the achievement of greater circular economy performance remains complex and not fully understood. Adopting the Supply Chain Practice View and paradox theory as theoretical lenses, this paper addresses a literature gap by examining how supp

Forest topsoil salvage and placement threshold depths for boreal forest revegetation as influenced by ecosite and substrate texture.

Forest topsoil is a critical source of native vegetative propagules and seeds for boreal forest land reclamation. However, optimal handling practices for this material and its interactions with underlying substrates remain poorly defined. This field study investigated effects of operational topsoil salvage and placement depths on native plant establishment, accounting for site conditions, substrate type, ecosite characteristics, and local climate. We evaluated varying salvage and placement depths across mineral and peat-mineral mix substrates. Shallow salvage (10 cm) maximized plant species ri

Eight recommendations to enhance biodiversity outcomes of nature-based solutions at multiple scales.

Ambitions to mainstream Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and achieve global implementation are hampered by the lack of transdisciplinary integration across disciplines and practice. Ecological knowledge, including an understanding of how biodiversity can support, and be supported by, NbS design and implementation remains an under-studied component of the NbS concept despite its critical importance. Starting with a brief primer on the major roles that biodiversity plays in NbS performance, we present eight recommendations for enhancing biodiversity in NbS planning and implementation. This narrative

Incentives are effective but insufficient to halt smallholder deforestation in the Colombian Amazon.

In this article, we assess the impact of two Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) initiatives aimed at deterring deforestation in the department of Guaviare, Colombia. The initiatives are the government-led Incentivo Forestal Amazónico (IFA), which is part of the country's REDD+ strategy, and the NGO-driven Caminemos-Territorios Sostenibles (CTS) project, which supported sustainable land-use activities over a four-year period. We find that, combined, these initiatives prevented approximately 1,400 hectares of forest loss, though they differed in their annualized impacts (2.9% versus 3.8%). We

Emergy evaluation of ecological sustainability in Cananguchales (Mauritia flexuosa): A biocountable approach in the Amazonian foothills.

Cananguchales, forested wetlands dominated by Mauritia flexuosa, are strategic ecosystems in the Amazonian foothills due to their contribution to ecosystem goods and services. However, their high vulnerability to climate variability and the progressive degradation caused by the global crisis demand new tools for their valuation and sustainable management. This study evaluated the ecological sustainability of Cananguchales through emergy indicators that allow biocountable monitoring of the efficiency and performance of their ecological wealth. Indicators of Ecological Loading, Sustainable Emerg

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice: Assessing Two Decades of Methodological Procedures and Reporting Omissions in Roadkill Studies of The Brazilian Cerrado.

This review assesses two decades (2000-2024) of Road Ecology research in the Brazilian Cerrado, a global biodiversity hotspot. We analyzed 63 studies on four major vertebrate groups to quantify trends, methodological procedures, omissions, and road mortality, drivers that could compromise the evidence base for environmental management. While research output has expanded temporally, it remains geographically concentrated in established states (Goiás, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo), leaving high-deforestation frontiers like the Matopiba region (Tocantins, Maranhão, Piauí, and Bahia) severely under

Ecosystem structure influences human health outcomes as the basis for green prescriptions.

The role of Nature **** in supporting human life, health, and well-being has been recognized and appreciated since ancient times, and has become a topic of scientific investigation with early studies dating back several decades. In recent years, this field has gained renewed attention and methodological refinement, driven by interdisciplinary frameworks and advances in environmental psychology, ecology, and health sciences, including new ecosystem-based approaches that highlight the deep human dependence on Nature for both mental and physical health. Among Nature-based Interventions that aim a

Shifting Priorities: How Amendments in Forestry Law Impact Resource Management, the Case of Türkiye.

In Türkiye, where nearly all forests are publicly owned, the government exercises substantial authority over forest management and utilization. This study examines how legislative and regulatory changes in forestry have shaped local outcomes, focusing on the tension between economic priorities and ecological sustainability. Methodologically, the study combines Hamilton's institutional approach, highlighting the role of legal frameworks, administrative routines, and authority structures in shaping governance, with Foucault's concept of governmentality, which emphasizes how power is exercised th

Balancing well-being and environment: The moderating role of governance in sustainable development amid environmental degradation.

In the context of sustainable development goals, the topic of subjective well-being (SWB) has gained the primary focus of the academic community and policymakers. It appears that a variety of economic, social, political, and environmental factors influence SWB. Given that, the current study aims to examine the empirical relationship between SWB and carbon emissions (CO2) in the presence of governance. In particular, we look at South Asia's experience from 2000 to 2021 to examine the ability of governance to moderate the detrimental impact of environmental degradation on SWB. The analysis takes

Adaptive evolution of koala retrovirus transcription silencing and what it means for conservation.

Koala populations in Australia face a barrage of threats, chiefly, habitat degradation and the effects of climate change including drought and bushfire. Further, high rates of chlamydiosis, linked to koala retrovirus (KoRV) viral load, is a major contributing factor to northern population decline. However, recent work by Yu et al., (Cell, 2024) has provided a glimmer of hope: some koalas have evolved 'adaptive genome immunity', which is able to actively suppress endogenous KoRV transcription. A single KoRV-A provirus insertion within MAP4K4 gene's 3' UTR is shown to be the trigger for producti

Assessing and improving the veracity of international trade in captive-bred animals.

Captive breeding is often seen as a solution to sustainably increasing the supply of individuals in the wildlife trade. To be an effective conservation measure this requires robust systems to verify the authenticity of captive-bred species. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) monitors the international trade in Listed species-which for many taxa is dominated by captive-bred individuals-using the Review of Captive Trade (RCT) process. A key question is how best to identify laundered or inauthentic captive-bred trade and how has this change

Where, When, and How Much Should We Pay for Wind Erosion Prevention Services of the Largest Chinese Grassland Reserve?

The large-scale and cross-regional payment for ecosystem services (PES) contributes positively to ecology-economy balance and thus helps prevent environmental challenges such as "sand storm". However, existing PES programs often overlook the connection between service-providing areas (SPAs) and service-benefiting areas (SBAs). Here, we developed an interregional PES framework based on the theory of ecosystem services flow and applied it to the largest Chinese grassland nature reserve, Xilingol Prairie, to quantitatively identify SPAs, SBAs, and flow paths of the ecosystem wind erosion preventi

A social-ecological framework and toolbox to help strengthening functional agrobiodiversity-supported ecosystem services at the landscape scale.

Functional agrobiodiversity (FAB) has severely declined during the last decades. Current efforts to reinforce FAB are mainly focused on single-actor, parcel-based measures, whereas multi-actor landscape approaches are supposed to be more effective. In this paper, we propose a social-ecological framework that structures how different land users at both the parcel and landscape level interact with FAB as a natural resource. Furthermore, we introduce 1 m2 FAB gardens as an interactive multipurpose measurement tool to gather data on ecosystem services in collaboration with land users. The presente

Sustainable agriculture: an explanation of a concept.

Close relationships between agriculture and many areas of human activity determine countless interlinkages with global issues of natural environment protection, human population increase, food supply, industry and world trade. This broad context promotes different perceptions of sustainable agriculture by different interest groups. Profitable diversification away from overproduction of basic commodities and satisfaction of environmental pressure groups are major preoccupations in developed countries. Elsewhere the main concerns is to maintain a trend of increasing production: food security wit

Parks are the answer: help us prove it.

In just the last year I've seen several new fitness centers spring up in Pittsburgh, PA. But unless these centers sprout up in every neighborhood-with free memberships for all our citizens-they will never be the solution to our physical activity deficit. With a population of more than 300,000 inside our city limits, we need to be talking about ways to get tens of thousands of people more active. I'm not picking on fitness centers, just using that obvious example to illustrate the problem of translating activity programs to a meaningful scale. Is the activity scalable? When I read about program

Combining industrial and urban water-reuse concepts for increasing the water resources in water-scarce regions.

Water scarcity is a huge challenge for industrial and urban developments. As such developments are based on a secure water supply, strategies to ensure the required water quantities must be put into effect. In this context, sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor due to the worsening of pollution and climate change. The integrated industrial-urban water-reuse concept (IU-WA-RE) links gray and green infrastructures by providing reuse water for different infrastructural purposes. Municipal and industrial wastewater is treated separately in different water resource recovery fa

Nexus of green energy, financial inclusion, militarization, and environmental sustainability: A global perspective.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This article investigates the dynamic impact of green energy consumption (GE), financial inclusion (FI), and military spending (MS) on environmental sustainability (ES) by utilizing a sample of 121 countries from 2003 to 2022. The dataset is divided into high-income, upper-middle income and low and lower-middle-income countries. We employed a two-step system GMM approach, which was further robust through panel Quantile and Driscoll-Kraay (D-K) regressions. The findings divulged that green energy resources benefit ES at global and all income levels because of having a significant negative impac

Optimal planning of co-firing alternative fuels with coal in a power plant by grey nonlinear mixed integer programming model.

Energy supply and use is of fundamental importance to society. Although the interactions between energy and environment were originally local in character, they have now widened to cover regional and global issues, such as acid rain and the greenhouse effect. It is for this reason that there is a need for covering the direct and indirect economic and environmental impacts of energy acquisition, transport, production and use. In this paper, particular attention is directed to ways of resolving conflict between economic and environmental goals by encouraging a power plant to consider co-firing b
