Initial Evaluation of the Operational Neck Pain Index.

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain during military flight is well documented. Characterizing operationally relevant, specific pain location(s), severity, character, and exacerbating or relieving conditions is needed to develop musculoskeletal neck pain prediction models. METHODS: An anonymous, web-based questionnaire and weighted numerical response index was developed with the help of an expert clinical panel. The questionnaire was reviewed, approved, and disseminated to military pilots. Respondents reported their current neck and upper back musculogenic and neurogenic pain with a 5-level severity at 14

Not your common neck pain: Longus coli tendonitis.

Longus coli tendonitis is a rare etiology of neck pain, occurring so infrequently that a prevalence is difficult to determine. Typical symptoms include neck pain, neck stiffness and an elevation of inflammatory markers, raising a concern for an infectious etiology. Radiographic imaging is essential to establish a diagnosis and differentiate between life-threatening infectious pathologies, including meningitis and abscesses leading to airway compromise. We present a rare case of longus coli tendonitis, initially thought to be infectious. Our case highlights the importance of multimodal imaging

Neck pain: global epidemiology, trends and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, having an age-standardised prevalence rate of 27.0 per 1000 population in 2019. This literature review describes the global epidemiology and trends associated with neck pain, before exploring the psychological and biological risk factors associated with the initiation and progression of neck pain. METHODS: The PubMed database and Google Scholar search engine were searched up to May 21, 2021. Studies were included that used human subjects and evaluated the effects of biological or psychological factors on the occurrence

Pestle Needle (Chu Zhen) Treatment for Neck Pain.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain-called Jing Bi or Neck Bi-syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)-is frequently treated with various TCM modalities. Pestle needle (Chu Zhen) is a unique noninvasive treatment method that originated from the Sichuan province in China. This therapy is a combination of acupuncture and massage. There is little research on the clinical use of pestle needle, and detailed case reports are few in number. CASES: This report describes 3 patients' neck pain-treatments via pestle needle; the patients were from Denmark, Indonesia, and China. RESULTS: Each author treated 1 of

From Neck Pain to Sarcoidosis: The Interesting Association.

We report the case of a 31-year-old male patient, presenting to the emergency department (ED) with a 6-week history of left-sided lateral neck pain, along with a minor localized swelling. A few weeks after the beginning of his complaints, he contracted a mild coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Upon examination, his aches were defined as carotidynia; thus, proper radiologic evaluation was carried out. While ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed evident signs of left common carotid (LCC) vasculitis, computed tomography angiography (CTA) and positron emission tomogra

A 66-year-old man with neck pain.

Neck pain is a fairly common complaint among patients in the ED. The differential diagnosis is broad, from musculoskeletal causes to potentially life-threatening causes. Providers need to have a good understanding of when the complaint of neck pain requires more diagnostic investigation, even in a patient with chronic neck pain.

Neck Pain Associated With a Bony Metastatic Tumor.

A 78-year-old man was referred to physical therapy with a 5-month history of nontraumatic neck pain and reductions in active bilateral rotation without radiculopathy. Radiography and computed tomography taken 2 months prior demonstrated age-related multilevel degenerative disc disease. Following physical therapy with no improvement in symptoms, magnetic resonance imaging with contrast and bone scintigraphy were ordered by the physician. An expansile lesion in the right lateral mass of the atlas on magnetic resonance imaging was consistent with a metastatic activity. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther 2

Eagle's syndrome, a rare cause of neck pain.

Eagle's syndrome (ES) sometimes called styloid or stylohyoid syndrome is defined as the symptomatic elongation of the styloid process or mineralisation of the stylohyoid ligament. The symptoms related to this condition can be confused with those attributed to a wide variety of facial neuralgias. We report a 34-year-old male patient who presented with a recurrent neck pain and dysphagia. He was diagnosed to have an elongated styloid process. An intraoral transtonsillar shortening of the styloid process was done. We discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of ES as well as a re

Neck-shoulder pain and weakness: an uncommon presentation.

Neck and shoulder pain is a very common complaint in Western society that most often does not include motor compromise. Although peripheral nerve injuries are not as common, they should not be misdiagnosed. This case report describes the subjective assessment and physical examination of a patient with neck-shoulder pain and disabilities following a cervicofacial lift surgery. The patient was referred to physiotherapy treatment for what was diagnosed as a multi-level cervical disorder. Physical examination by the physiotherapist revealed diagnostic signs of accessory and suprascapular nerve inj

A pitfall in neck pain: occult odontoid fracture.

Type III odontoid fractures of the axis are the second most common injuries of the cervical spine. Most of these result from motor vehicle accidents and falls. Occult odontoid fractures without preceding trauma are rarely reported in the literature and may be difficult to diagnose. We report the case of a healthy patient who had no history of trauma, but sustained sudden pain in the neck and guarding during head movement after sleep. Initial radiographs of the cervical spine including open-mouth, anterior-posterior, and lateral views did not reveal any obvious fractures. Type III odontoid frac

Neck retractions, cervical root decompression, and radicular pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Two-group repeated measures. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the changes in the flexor carpi radialis H reflex after reading and neck retraction exercises and to correlate reflex changes with the intensity of radicular pain. BACKGROUND: Repeated neck retraction movements have been routinely prescribed for patients with neck pain. METHODS AND MEASURES: Ten nonimpaired subjects (mean age, 27 +/- 4 years) and 13 patients (mean age, 35 +/- 9 years) with C7 radiculopathy volunteered for the study. The flexor carpi radialis H reflex was elicited by electrical stimulation of the median nerve

[Neck pain and isolated torticollis revealing neurologic lesions].

Neck pain and torticollis are very common symptoms, but they may reveal an intracranial or cervical neurological disease. Such diseases are easily diagnosed when these two symptoms are associated with others, but in some rare cases, and especially when it is isolated, torticollis may be mistaken for common neck pain. This is what happened in 21 cases and in some patients the neurological disease had been present for a very long time before it was diagnosed. Prior to admission, most patients were treated with massages, cervical collar or manipulations which sometimes resulted in deterioration.

Ergonomics of bronchoscopy: good advice or a pain in the neck?

Interventional pulmonologists require a unique set of skills including precise motor abilities and physical endurance, but surprisingly the application of ergonomic principles in the field of bronchoscopy remains limited. This is particularly intriguing when considering the significant impact that poor ergonomics can have on diagnostic aptitude, income potential and overall health. It is therefore imperative to provide comprehensive education to physicians regarding the significance of ergonomics in their work, especially considering the introduction of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic proc
