BACKGROUND: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been suggetsed to have a positive impact on the healing of sternal or extremity wounds. However, few data deriving from breast surgery have been published. We evaluated the available literature regarding the effectiveness of NPWT systems in the healing of breast tissues.
METHODS: The PubMed and Scopus databases were searched systematically, and all studies that provided relevant data were considered eligible for inclusion in the review. Twenty studies (154 female patients) met the inclusion criteria (four cohort studies, one case series,

INTRODUCTION: Early debridement and coverage has long been regarded as the standard of care for open fractures of the lower limb, as infection is a serious complication. However, the best time for wound closure remains controversial. Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is thought to result in reduced flap infection and failure. To determine the effect of NPWT, we reviewed patients with open fractures of the lower limb and compared the rates of infection and flap failure in two time-based cohorts.
METHODS: Two cohorts of patients (periods 2003-2004 and 2008-2009) with Gustilo type IIIB open

BACKGROUND: Topical negative pressure (TNP) therapy is becoming increasingly popular for all kinds of wounds. Its clinical and cost effectiveness is unclear.
METHODS: A search of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on TNP in adult patients with all kinds of wounds in all settings was undertaken in Medline, Embase, Cinahl (to October 2007) and the Cochrane Library (to issue 4, 2007). Information was also sought from manufacturer of the VAC device. Selection of trials for analysis, quality assessment, data abstraction and data synthesis were conducted by two authors independently. Negative pressure therapy (NPT) has been accepted as a valuable adjunct for wound closure in adults; however, reports on its effectiveness in young children and infants, including neonates, are limited. A retrospective chart review was conducted on children treated with NPT at a single institution between January 2003 and December 2005. Wound volumetric measurements were calculated at the start and end of therapy. Sixty-eight patients with 82 wounds were identified. The mean age was 8.5 years (range 7 days-18 years). Twenty patients (29%) were 2 years of age or younger, including eight neonate

BACKGROUND: We encountered a case of infected soft tissue defect of the fingertip treated using negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). The development of NPWT was started in the early 1990s, and it is a relatively new treatment method included in insurance coverage in Japan in 2010. NPWT is used for intractable wounds; some reports have examined its use on infected wounds. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has examined its use on infected fingertip wounds.
METHODS: A patient with an infected soft tissue defect in the fingertip whose epithelialization period was prolonged despit

NPWT has probably been the most important addition to wound care in the current century. Despite this fact, its use in the treatment of VLUs remains very limited. This review first examines the documented and potential VLU wound environment changes that can be facilitated by NPWT. The data supporting the use of NPWT for VLU wound bed preparation, the management of fluid drainage, and the bolstering of skin grafts are evaluated. The similarities and differences between suNPWT, traditional NPWT, and NPWTi are outlined. Included in this review is when and where each therapy may have a place in th

Fournier gangrene (FG) is a life-threatening disease affecting the soft tissues of the genital, perineal, and perianal regions. This retrospective study aimed to summarize the characteristics of FG and evaluate the effects of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT). We analyzed clinical data of 36 patients with FG admitted to our department. Thirty-four cases had perianal and external genital infections, and the other two had secondary infection of the urinary fistula after trauma and retroperitoneal abscess, respectively. Monomicrobial, polymicrobial, culture-negative, and fungal infections we

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic leakage is one of the severe complications after lymphadenectomy. However, efficient treatment it still unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed inguinal lymphadenectomy and saphenous lymphatic vessel excision to establish a inguinal lymphatic leakage rabbit model. Rabbits with bilateral lymphatic leakage were divided in two groups, which were subject to negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) on right sides and dressing change on left sides, respectively. Following 7-11 d of treatment, skin thickness and drainage volume were measured. Western blot and RT-PCR were used

BACKGROUND: Optimal wound healing in negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) depends on a properly sealed vacuum system. Anatomically difficult wounds disrupt the adhesive dressing, resulting in air leaks that impair the integrity of this system. Several techniques have been used in previous reports to prevent air leaks, including the addition of skin adhesives (eg, Skin-Prep [Smith and Nephew, St. Petersburg, FL] or compound tincture of benzoin), hydrocolloid dressings, silicone, and stoma paste. The purpose of this case report is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using a cyanoacrylate tissu

Diabetic foot (DF) is a common complication of diabetes and the first cause of hospital admission in diabetic patients. In recent years several guidelines have been proposed to reinforce the the management of DF with a notable increase in diabetes knowledge and an overall reduction of amputations. Significant improvements have been reached in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and nowadays clinicians have several advanced medications to apply for the best local therapy. Among these, negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a useful adjunct in the management of chronic and complex wo

Animal and case studies suggest that topical negative pressure for subacute wounds can increase angiogenesis and local blood flow and reduce bacterial counts, but clinical trials into the technique have yet to be conducted.

Home health agencies, challenged to demonstrate quality while containing costs, are motivated to find best practices for managing patient and wound care. The effects of different wound therapies on frequency of hospitalization and emergent care, two prominent quality measures, have not been studied. A retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Stage III and Stage IV pressure ulcers in the home health population and to quantify the impact of negative pressure wound therapy in reducing acute care hospitalizations and emergent care in general, and wound infection or deterior

Background: Larval debridement therapy is used to cleanse necrotic tissue wounds and/or decontaminate wounds that are not amenable to standard therapies. Methods: A patient was diagnosed with septic shock and multiple organ failure caused by Streptococcus pyogenes after thyroidectomy (the patient had experienced contact with a child with scarlet fever six days before admission to the hospital). As a result of systemic infection, numerous necrotic skin lesions appeared, which involved the surgical site, chest and scalp. A tracheocutaneous fistula was confirmed. Due to the ineffectiveness of typ

BACKGROUND/AIM: Vulva cancer surgery is associated with a high level of morbidity mostly due to wound healing disorders in the inguinal region following lymphadenectomy. Our aim is to evaluate the feasibility of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) using the PICO™ device in groin wounds after lymphadenectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The groins of twenty patients who underwent bilateral lymph node dissection were dressed with the PICO™ device. All patients were followed prospectively with clinical controls up to three months postoperatively using a standardized study protocol.
RESULTS: A tota

BACKGROUND: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been described for closure of complex neonatal abdominal wounds, but advanced techniques for stoma or fistula control, skin protection, and the use of high pressure therapy not as well established.
CASES: We identified neonatal patients at our institution who received NPWT for a complex abdominal wound, defined as a wound associated with a stoma or fistula with partial or complete dehiscence of the abdominal fascia or skin. We then reviewed techniques for decreasing wound contamination and protecting the newborn's skin. One patient had an

OBJECTIVE: Topical negative pressure (TNP) therapy is widely used in the treatment of acute wounds in vascular patients on the basis of proposed multifactorial benefits. However, numerous recent systematic reviews have concluded that there is inadequate evidence to support its benefits at a scientific level. This study evaluated the changes in wound volume, surface area, depth, collagen deposition, and tissue oxygenation when using TNP therapy compared with traditional dressings in patients with acute high-risk foot wounds.
METHODS: This study was performed with hospitalized vascular patients

INTRODUCTION: Debridement and control of wound drainage are critical for managing patients with extensive traumatic wounds because wound infection can result in sepsis and further complications.
CASE REPORT: The authors report the case of a 19-year-old woman with an extensive crush/degloving injury to her right lower limb that was treated with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with a reticulated open-cell foam dressing. The patient received 2 treatments of sharp debridement and vacuum drainage using wall suction and polyvinyl alcohol dressings. Her respiratory failure, sepsis, and septic
