Intimate partner violence and safer sex negotiation: effects of a gender-specific intervention.

This study examined the effects of a gender-specific HIV/STD prevention intervention with two dosage levels (four-session, eight-session) among women reporting physical abuse by a current or recent (past year) intimate partner. From 360 women included in the full randomized trial, we conducted subgroup analyses among 152 women who experienced partner physical abuse within the past year. Unprotected vaginal and anal sex occasions and negotiation skills were examined as outcomes. We also assessed whether the intervention increased previously abused women's subsequent risk of physical abuse. Amon

The role of couple negotiation in unmet need for contraception and the decision to stop childbearing in Uganda.

This study uses survey and focus-group data from the 1995-96 Negotiating Reproductive Outcomes study in Uganda to describe the nature of the decision to stop childbearing and to question the simplifying assumption of consensus decision-making implicit in much demographic research on unmet need. Negotiation is characterized in four stages, from normative precedent for decision-making to communication, disagreement, and conflict resolution. Indirect forms of communication between partners predominate, contributing to the tendency of both men and women to overestimate each other's demand for addi

Negotiating Truths to "Pass Through the Hoop": How Men's Trajectories Shape Their Stories in Batterer Intervention Programmes.

Narrative criminology has highlighted the role of storytelling in criminal behaviour and processes of change. In studies of intimate partner violence desistance, micro-social scholarship shows that therapeutic success often depends on negotiations between offenders' narratives and institutional narratives. Yet this literature has paid limited attention to the material and institutional conditions shaping such negotiations. Drawing on repeated life story interviews conducted with 41 men attending batterer intervention programmes in Argentina and Uruguay, this study compares participants' instit

Negotiating the borderlands of agency: A narrative inquiry into voice and resilience among IPV survivors in Saskatchewan.

BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health and human rights issue, yet survivors' agency is often framed narrowly within linear victim-survivor narratives that overlook how intersecting identities and structural constraints shape their options and responses. Objectives: To explore how women who have experienced IPV negotiate agency and reclaim voice within intersecting social, cultural, and personal borderlands of experience.DesignQualitative narrative inquiry informed by intersectionality and borderlands theory.MethodsTwo women living in a Canadian city, who self -

Research capacity strengthening methods and meanings: negotiating power in a global health programme on violence against women.

BACKGROUND: There has been much critical reflection among global health researchers about how power imbalances between high-income countries and low- and middle-income country collaborators are perpetuated through research programmes. Research capacity strengthening (RCS) is considered both a mechanism through which to redress structural power imbalances in global health research and a vehicle for their perpetuation. This paper examines the RCS programme of a multi-county study on violence against women, focussing on how it addressed power imbalances between countries and the challenges involv

Dynamic Deformation Behaviors of the Levitation Electromagnets of High-Speed Maglev Vehicle Negotiating a Sharp Horizontal Curve.

The elastic deformation of the levitation electromagnet (LM) of the high-speed maglev vehicle brings uneven levitation gaps and displacement differences between measured gap signals and the real gap in the middle of the LM, and then reduces dynamic performances of the electromagnetic levitation unit. However, most of the published literature has paid little attention to the dynamic deformation of the LM under complex line conditions. In this paper, considering the flexibility of the LM and the levitation bogie, a rigid-flexible coupled dynamic model is established to simulate deformation behav

'We're Not Doing It To Be Nasty': Caregivers' Ethical Dilemmas in Negotiating Driving Safety with Older Adults.

The purpose of this research was to investigate how informal caregivers of older adults cope with and negotiate driving safety when their loved one is no longer safe to drive. Fifteen informal caregivers of an older adult living at home took part in the present study. Participants cared for individuals with a range of health conditions that significantly impaired driving safety, including dementia, Parkinson's disease, macular degeneration, and stroke. A thematic analysis of participants' accounts identified the complex interpersonal, social, and organisational context they encountered when th

Informal motorbike taxi drivers and mobility injustice on Hanoi's streets. Negotiating the curve of a new narrative.

The central government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and Hanoi's municipal authorities are enthusiastically embracing a series of plans and policies for the capital city to create a sustainable mega-city. This state imaginary privileges 'modern' mobilities, championing highways, a bus rapid transport system, and an elevated metro, while so called 'traditional' means of moving around the city such as motorbikes, bicycles, or cyclos are being strongly discouraged and increasingly marginalised. For example, Hanoi officials are implementing a step-wise ban on motorbikes from downtown street

Negotiating structural vulnerability following regulatory changes to a provincial methadone program in Vancouver, Canada: A qualitative study.

While regulatory frameworks governing methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) require highly regimented treatment programs that shape treatment outcomes, little research has examined the effects of regulatory changes to these programs on those receiving treatment, and located their experiences within the wider context of social-structural inequities. In British Columbia (BC), Canada, provincial regulations governing MMT have recently been modified, including: replacing the existing methadone formulation with Methadose(®) (pre-mixed and 10 times more concentrated); prohibiting pharmacy delivery of

Negotiating illness through faith: Religious narratives of cancer etiology among patients and caregivers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Cancer has become a major global public health threat, and individuals diagnosed with cancer and their family caregivers often seek to understand their illness experiences. Religious, spiritual, and sociocultural beliefs play a central role in shaping illness interpretations and care-seeking behaviors. However, in Ethiopia, limited attention has been paid to how these frameworks influence cancer experiences. This study explored religious narratives and interpretations of illness etiology among individuals diagnosed with cancer and their family caregivers and examined their influence on illness

Negotiating the ambiguity of an (in)authentic working life: a grounded theory study into severe perineal trauma.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, persistent physical and psychological health problems occur in about three in ten women who sustain severe perineal trauma (SPT) during childbirth. As most Swedish women work outside the home, the question of if and how SPT-related morbidity influences working life needs exploration. This study aims to qualitatively explore how women with persistent SPT-related morbidities experience and conceptualise their problems concerning working life. Further, we theorise the findings by applying Simone de Beauvoir's feminist framework of immanence and transcendence as well as auth

"When you carry condoms all the boys think you want it": negotiating competing discourses about safe sex.

With the advent of HIV, sexual health campaigns and formal sex education in schools have worked to instil the concept of safe sex into the collective minds of Australia's youth. However the concept in its present guise is a fairly limited one. We argue in this paper that the predominant emphasis in education programmes on safe sex as condom use may be counter-productive for some young heterosexuals for two reasons. First, this strategy is male-focused and may not extrapolate well to young women who face special risks around pregnancy and rigid societal gender norms which govern sexual behaviou

The influential first offer: How to advance a negotiation classic by integrating features, mechanisms, and outcomes.

Six decades of research and hundreds of effects have identified robust first-offer advantages and disadvantages. Too assertive an offer can alienate the opposing negotiator, elevate the impasse risk, as well as impair the relationship and outcome satisfaction. In contrast, first offers can also beneficially anchor negotiation outcomes in the first mover's favor. This advantage is particularly strong when first movers effectively apply the first offer's moderating features precision, framing, ranges, and rationales. Despite more than six decades of research, existing studies on first-offer effe

Can we negotiate dignity with a plate of food? The intersections of food, homelessness, and Dussel's philosophy.

This essay draws on a qualitative study that explored the understandings of employees responsible for planning, preparing, and distributing meals in three food assistance services in downtown São Paulo (Brazil) regarding food provision for people experiencing homelessness. In that study, 12 semi-structured interviews and materials from in-depth fieldwork conducted between December 2022 and December 2023 were analyzed using thematic content analysis. We revisited the previously identified themes through the lens of Enrique Dussel's Philosophy of Liberation, particularly the concepts of Totality

Who to engage in HIV vaccine trial benefit-sharing negotiations? An empirical proposition of a framework.

BACKGROUND: A morally sound framework for benefit-sharing is crucial to minimize research exploitation for research conducted in developing countries. However, in practice, it remains uncertain which stakeholders should be involved in the decision-making process regarding benefit-sharing and what the implications might be. Therefore the study aimed to empirically propose a framework for benefit-sharing negotiations in research by taking HIV vaccine trials as a case. METHODS: The study was conducted in Tanzania using a case study design and qualitative approaches. Data were collected using in-

A good death: non-negotiable personal conditions for clinicians, healthcare administrators and support staff.

OBJECTIVES: To ask all clinical, administrative and support staff affiliated with a large network of healthcare facilities to identify the conditions that they consider as non-negotiable for their own deaths to be regarded as good. METHODS: All 3495 staff of a healthcare network were asked to rank 10 conditions according to how non-negotiable they would be for themselves during their final 3 months or few hours for their own deaths to be considered as good. They were also asked about whether they had thought about their own death in the last 3 months, if they had a will, believed in God, and

Should we consider steps with variable height for a safer stair negotiation in older adults?

BACKGROUND: Effects of exercise on foot clearances are important. In older adults variations in foot clearances during walking may lead to a fall, but there is a lack of information concerning stair negotiation in older adults. Whether a condition of post exercise changes foot clearances between steps of a staircase in older adults still unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine differences in clearances when older adults negotiate different steps of a staircase before and after a session of aerobic exercise. METHODS: Kinematics data from 30 older adults were acquired and the toe and heel clearances

Acute Effects of Walking Exercise on Stair Negotiation in Sedentary and Physically Active Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: In negotiating stairs, low foot clearance increases the risk of tripping and a fall. Foot clearance may be related to physical fitness, which differs between active and sedentary participants, and be acutely affected by exercise. Impaired stair negotiation could be an acute response to exercise. Here we determined acute changes in foot clearances during stair walking in sedentary (n = 15) and physically active older adults (n = 15) after prolonged exercise. METHODS: Kinematic data were acquired during negotiation with a 3-steps staircase while participants walked at preferred spee

Knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about contraceptive and sexual consent negotiation among college women.

College women have the highest rates of sexual violence, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy compared with women in all other age groups. Although much is known about sexual risk behaviors among college women, less is known about how women negotiate consent for contraceptive use during sexual encounters. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore college women's knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about contraceptive and sexual consent during dating relationships. Twenty-six women participated in five focus groups on two college campuses in

Rewriting abortion: deploying medical records in jurisdictional negotiation over a forbidden practice in Senegal.

Boundary work refers to the strategies deployed by professionals in the arenas of the public, the law and the workplace to define and defend jurisdictional authority. Little attention has been directed to the role of documents in negotiating professional claims. While boundary work over induced abortion has been extensively documented, few studies have examined jurisdictional disputes over the treatment of abortion complications, or post-abortion care (PAC). This study explores how medical providers deploy medical records in boundary work over the treatment of complications of spontaneous and
