Suppression of mucosal mastocytosis by infection with the intestinal nematode Nematospiroides dubius.

Mice exposed to primary infections with the parasite intestinal nematode Nematospiroides dubius failed to show the mucosal mast cell (MMC) response which is characteristic of infections with other species of intestinal nematode and which was readily induced in these mice by infections with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis or Trichinella spiralis. The failure to generate a mucosal mastocytosis was independent of host strain or sex. When infections with N. dubius were established before, or concurrently with, T. spiralis or N. brasiliensis, the MMC response elicited by these species was delayed and/

Field evaluation of targeted selective treatments to control subclinical gastrointestinal nematode infections on small ruminant farms.

Targeted selective treatments (TST) are designed to identify those animals that would actually benefit from anthelmintic treatment, thus reducing the amount of drugs used and bringing down economic cost. In this study we assayed three TST programs based on GIN egg output, clinical sign and live weight criteria in a single area where only sub-clinical infections tend to occur and no anthelmintic resistance is reported. The study was carried out from February 2011 to August 2013 on four farms applying different management systems: an Ovine Extensive System, Ovine Semi-extensive Semi-irrigated Sy

Exploring the host transcriptome for mechanisms underlying protective immunity and resistance to nematode infections in ruminants.

Nematode infections in ruminants are a major impediment to the profitable production of meat and dairy products, especially for small farms. Gastrointestinal parasitism not only negatively impacts weight gain and milk yield, but is also a major cause of mortality in small ruminants. The current parasite control strategy involves heavy use of anthelmintics that has resulted in the emergence of drug-resistant parasite strains. This, in addition to increasing consumer demand for animal products that are free of drug residues has stimulated development of alternative strategies, including selectiv

The unique resistance and resilience of the Nigerian West African Dwarf goat to gastrointestinal nematode infections.

BACKGROUND: West African Dwarf (WAD) goats serve an important role in the rural village economy of West Africa, especially among small-holder livestock owners. They have been shown to be trypanotolerant and to resist infections with Haemonchus contortus more effectively than any other known breed of goat. METHODS: In this paper we review what is known about the origins of this goat breed, explain its economic importance in rural West Africa and review the current status of our knowledge about its ability to resist parasitic infections. CONCLUSIONS: We suggest that its unique capacity to show

Impacts of naturally acquired protozoa and strongylid nematode infections on growth and faecal attributes in lambs.

On two separate sampling occasions, faecal samples were collected from lambs (2-5 months of age) grazing pasture on two separate sheep farms in southern Western Australia. Live weight, body condition score (BCS), faecal consistency score (FCS) and faecal dry matter percentage (DM%) were measured. Faecal samples were screened by PCR for Cryptosporidium (18S rRNA, actin and 60 kDa glycoprotein [gp60] loci), Giardia duodenalis (glutamate dehydrogenase [gdh] and β-giardin) and patent strongylid nematode infections (ITS-2 nuclear ribosomal DNA for Haemonchus contortus, Teladorsagia circumcincta, Tr

Resistance of Santa Ines, Suffolk and Ile de France sheep to naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematode infections.

A study was conducted to assess the breed resistance against nematode infections in Santa Ines, Ile de France and Suffolk male lambs over a 9-month period in São Paulo state, Brazil. Lambs were born during the winter (year 2000) and were weaned at 2 months of age. The animals were then housed and treated with anthelmintics to eliminate natural infections by gastrointestinal nematodes. In late October 2000, lambs were placed in a paddock, where they stayed until August of the following year. Fecal and blood samples were taken from each animal every 2 weeks. On the same day, a pasture sample was

Antagonism between co-infecting gastrointestinal nematodes: A meta-analysis of experimental infections in Sheep.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) have enormous global impacts in humans, wildlife and grazing livestock. Within grazing livestock, sheep are of particular global importance and the economics and sustainability of sheep production are greatly constrained by GIN infections. Natural infections are composed of co-infections with multiple species, and while some past work suggests species can interact negatively with one another within the same host, there is wide variation in reported patterns. Here, we undertook a systematic literature search and meta-analysis of experimental GIN co-infections of

Immune response against protozoal and nematodal infection in mice with underlying Schistosoma mansoni infection.

Schistosoma mansoni infection induces T helper (Th) 2-dominant immune response in mice not only to S. mansoni itself but also to other coexisting antigens. In the present study, we challenged S. mansoni-infected mice with the intestinal nematode, Strongyloides venezuelensis, and the intracellular protozoa, Leishmania major to see whether such Th2-dominant immune responses alter susceptibility of the host to other concomitant parasitic infections. The recovery of S. venezuelensis adult worms from the small intestine was significantly decreased by S. mansoni infection, and the protection to S. v

Detecting nematodes in potato plants an explainable machine learning approach for detection of potato cyst nematode infections using hyperspectral imaging.

Potato cyst nematodes pose a major threat to potato cultivation, with infestations often going undetected for years. Early and accurate detection is crucial for effective management, necessitating reliable, large-scale monitoring methods. Hyperspectral imaging shows great promise for non-invasive nematode detection, yet distinguishing between biotic (e.g., nematodes) and abiotic (e.g., drought) stressors remains a challenge. This study investigated the stress responses of potato plants to potato cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida, and water deficiency. We generated datasets

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes Infecting Grapevine in Southern Spain and Susceptible Reaction to Root-Knot Nematodes of Rootstocks Reported as Moderately Resistant.

Incidence and nematode population densities of plant-parasitic nematodes were determined in 64 samples of soil and grapevine roots collected from commercial vineyards in southern Spain between October 2003 and May 2005. In addition, a histopathological study was done of root-stock roots naturally infected by root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). Nematodes infecting the rootstocks were identified according to conventional procedures, and the Meloidogyne spp. were furthermore identified by sequence characterized amplified region-polymerase chain reaction (SCAR-PCR) and isozyme esterase analyse

Discovery of Human PIM Kinase Inhibitors as a Class of Anthelmintic Drugs to Treat Intestinal Nematode Infections.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect one-fourth of the global population and pose a significant threat to human and animal health, with limited treatment options and emerging drug resistance. Trichuris trichiura (whipworm) stands out as a neglected disease, necessitating new drugs to address this unmet medical need. We discovered that several different chemical series of related human Provirus Integration sites for Moloney murine leukemia virus (PIM) family kinase inhibitors possess potent anthelmintic activity by using whole-worm motility assays. Systematic structure-activity rel
