Oncocytic carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of oncocytic cells, such cells being characterized by abundant granular eosinophilic cytoplasm, invasive growth, and pronounced cellular pleomorphism. It may arise de novo, or through malignant transformation of a pre-existing benign oncocytoma. Oncocytic carcinoma most commonly occurs in the salivary glands, with rare involvement of the ocular adnexa where it mainly affects caruncle, conjunctiva, and lacrimal sac, and only very arises in the lacrimal gland. This report presents a unique case of a 77-year-old male with lacrimal gland oncocytic c

RATIONALE: Bladder cancer (BC) is commonly diagnosed in the urinary system and the most common subtype is transitional urothelial carcinoma (TCC). Even with the best treatment, tumor recurrence and metastases always occur. While clinicians commonly observe the metastases to pelvic lymph nodes, liver, lung, and bone, it may infrequently spread to some uncommon locations.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 67-year-old man with a diagnosis of high-grade TCC with squamous differentiation in the bladder and prostate. Subsequently, radical cystoprostatectomy, adjuvant radiotherapy, and chemotherap

OBJECTIVE: Lipoblastoma is a rare neoplasm that occurs mostly in infants and children. Although benign, it has a tendency for local recurrence.
RESULTS: Clinical and pathological features of 23 cases of lipoblastoma described. Patients' age ranged from 8 months to 18 years with mean and median age 4.1 and 2.5 years, respectively. Male:female ratio was 2.8:1. Most common sites were lower extremities (9 cases), followed by abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum (4 cases), and scrotum/groin (3 cases). Grossly, 22 tumors were well circumscribed and multi nodular. All cases showed lobules composed o

Desmoplasia is the formation of a dense collagenous stroma around a neoplasm. It occurs in a variety of malignancies including squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). While desmoplasia is uncommonly seen in cutaneous SCC, it is an independent risk factor for recurrence and metastasis. We report a case series of desmoplastic SCC in the periorbital region. Seven cases were identified: the median age was 68, four were men. The mean follow-up was 48 months. Two patients (29%) had aggressive local recurrence: one required salvage surgery including orbital exenteration, parotidectomy, and neck dissection to

BACKGROUND: Transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA) is a less invasive procedure than pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). However, the outcomes of TDA and PD have been compared rarely in early ampullary cancer.
METHODS: From September 1994 to June 2013, the patients who underwent curative surgery for Tis or T1 ampulla of Vater neoplasm were identified. The patients were divided into two groups according to the types of surgery; TDA group and PD group. The patient characteristics and survival outcomes were retrospectively investigated between the two groups.
RESULTS: Total 137 patients were included in th

Primary leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of thyroid is rare malignant neoplasm usually seen in elderly patients. These tumours are characterised by a rapidly growing mass in the neck, difficult to diagnose preoperatively and are highly aggressive with high recurrence rates in spite of radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We herein report a case of 50-year-old female with a rapidly growing painless mass in the neck. Total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck node clearance was done. Histology and Immunohistochemistry revealed primary LMS of thyroid gland. Within 1 month of radical surgery she devel

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AAM) is a rare locally aggressive neoplasm of mesenchymal origin which occurs mainly in adult women. High local recurrence rate after surgery is due to incomplete surgical excision and most of the reported cases originate in the pelvis. We present a case of massive angiomyxoma arising from the abdomen and extending into the pelvis and perineum. A 23-year-old woman presented with a swelling of the left lower abdomen with discomfort and pain for 4 years. The swelling increased in size progressively and involved the perineum. At surgery the mass was abutting the urinary bl

A primary leiomyosarcoma of the kidney is a rare, but highly aggressive, neoplasm, accounting for only 0.1% of all invasive renal tumors. Local or systemic recurrence is common, but a leiomyosarcoma is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We recently encountered an interesting case of an unusual recurrence of a renal leiomyosarcoma. A 57-year-old woman visited our hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain. Four years previously, she had undergone a left nephrectomy. She had a primary leiomyosarcoma of the kidney that had been misdiagnosed as a renal cell carcinoma. Colonoscopy revealed the

We report a 31-year-old woman with a history of low-grade, undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma of the hand diagnosed at 10 years of age and subsequently amputated. The patient remained under surveillance without recurrence for over 20 years before she presented with multiple new masses in the skin of the head and neck. Biopsies confirmed recurrent sarcoma. Imaging studies revealed metastases within the lungs and peri-pancreatic tissue. Molecular analysis of these lesions showed a TPM3::NTRK1 fusion, and the patient started treatment on larotrectinib, on which she now remains, relapse and rec

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the nasopharynx. Despite improvements in the clinical treatment strategies for NPC, NPC patients usually have poor survival rates because of late diagnosis, tumor metastasis, and recurrence. Therefore, the identification of potential diagnostic and prognostic markers for NPC is imperative. We investigated the differential expression of cell adhesion-related genes (gene ontology:0003779) and tumorigenesis-related genes (GSE12452) in patients with NPC. The correlations between synaptopodin-2 (SYNPO2) immune expression and cl

BACKGROUND: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a soft tissue neoplasm of intermediate to low-grade malignancy. Although metastasis rarely occurs, DFSP has a locally aggressive behavior with a high recurrence rate. In the head and neck area, resection involving a wide margin of healthy tissue can be difficult because of functional and cosmetic considerations. We describe a novel reconstructive method for half forehead defects with an innovative single local wide scalp flap following excision of DFSP with a 3 cm margin of healthy tissue.
METHODS: Two patients underwent wide resection of

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics and treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin gland.
METHODS: The clinicopathological data of six patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin gland were retrospectively analyzed. The median age was 40.8 years (range 30 to 54 years). Surgery was the primary treatment. Simple vulvar tumor resection was performed in 1 patient. Four cases underwent radical vulvectomy with bilateral inguinal lymph node dissection and 1 case underwent wide local excision of the vulva with bilateral inguinal lymph node biopsy. Tw

A clinicopathologic study of 18 eccrine acrospiromas with atypical nuclear changes is presented. The changes included nuclear pleomorphism, prominent nucleoli, chromatin condensation, multinucleate giant cells and increased mitotic activity. Of the 5 neoplasms that occurred, 2 recurred once and were histologically and clinically benign, and the other 2 recurrences were histologically malignant. One neoplasm recurred twice, the first recurrences being histologically benign and the second histologically malignant. It is suggested that such nuclear atypias in otherwise clinically and histological

Osteogenic sarcoma is the central malignant bone neoplasm affecting the bones of arms and legs and rarely the soft tissues outside the bones. Historically, amputation was the chief surgical technique; currently, the popular standard is limb salvage surgery (LSS), although both procedures' effect on 5-year-event survival, 5-year disease-free survival rates (DFS) and the local recurrence is uncertain. Therefore, this meta-study aimed to establish the relationship between the effect of LSS and amputation in subjects with osteogenic carcinoma. A systematic survey till January 2021 to know the effe

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a relatively rare epithelial tumor of the major and minor salivary glands that makes up less than 1% of head and neck neoplasms. The typical clinical and pathological findings of this neoplasm include slow growth, perineural invasion, multiple local recurrences, and distant metastasis. Herein, we report a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma located to the lower lip which is quite uncommon.

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm is a rare epithelial tumor of the pancreas with low malignant potential and a marked predilection for adolescent girls and young women. Although the overall prognosis is favorable after complete resection, preoperative characterization and surgical planning become more challenging in giant tumors with intratumoral degeneration, hemorrhage, and adjacent vascular compression. We report a 15-year-old girl who presented with acute abdominal pain persisting for 24 hours after strenuous physical activity. Imaging revealed a giant mixed solid-cystic mass in the pancreat

BACKGROUND: Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare but aggressive form of endocrine neoplasm that confers a poor prognosis. To date, the only Australian data published is from New South Wales. This paper describes our experience in Western Australia with a focus on surgical approach and outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective study of patients treated for adrenocortical carcinoma in Western Australia over 14 years was performed.
RESULTS: Over the 14-year period, a total of 33 patients underwent surgery for adrenocortical carcinoma. Resection outcomes were superior in an open en bloc approach with an

Pilomatrix carcinoma is a rare malignancy stemming from aberrant proliferation of matrical cells found in developing hair. This neoplasm demonstrates a bimodal age distribution and a proclivity for developing on the head or neck. Clinically, a firm, painless, violaceous nodule with overlying ulceration is commonly described. Pilomatrix carcinoma is considered a variable-grade malignancy that tends to be locally aggressive, though metastatic disease occurs in 10 to 16 percent of cases. Mortality rates range from 7 to 9 percent. Although there is no definitive treatment protocol, surgical interv

Outsized tumours of the mediastinum are always present a challenge for the thoracic surgeon. This is a case report of a giant malignant Triton tumour occupying almost the entire right hemithorax. The patient presented in the accident and emergency (A&E) with severe dyspnoea. He referred a history of surgically excised fibromyxomatous sarcoma of the left lower limb with 2 local recurrences. The imaging studies revealed apart the giant neoplasm, total right lung atelectasis and pleural effusion. After diagnostic evacuation of the pleural effusion and bronchoscopy, the patient operated through a
