Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm is an uncommon, aggressive hematologic neoplasm carrying a poor prognosis with a median survival of one year, making early detection vital. Patients present with a number of characteristic cutaneous manifestations and are treated with chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which may improve survival. In this case, a 65-year-old man with a history of basal cell carcinoma presented with a nodule on his forehead with a honey-crusted border. Although the patient was treated with intralesional triamcinolone and a 7-day course of cephal

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by the basaloid appearance of the tumour cells and the lack of myxo-chondroid stromal component present in pleomorphic adenoma.
AIM: We report a case of basal cell adenoma of membranous type, highly suspected of malignancy because of the presence of mediastinal lymph nodes and pulmonary nodules which finally were related to an associated sarcoidosis.
OBSERVATION: Our patient was an 80-year-old woman who presented a swelling of the right parotid two years ago. The clinical examination revealed a solid, indolent and

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), is a rare, autosomal recessive disease with sun sensitivity and multiple neoplasms in association with reduced DNA repair. As a reflection of the clinical consequences of deficient DNA repair, XP serves as a model for determining the effects of proficient DNA repair. To estimate the risk of developing neoplasms in XP, we abstracted reports of 726 XP patients (from 41 countries) published from 1874 to 1982. Despite limitations of a literature survey, the XP patients under age 20 years had an estimated 2000-fold increase in frequency of basal cell and squamous cell ca

We present the case of a 71-year-old woman with no significant medical history who developed a nodular, ulcerated lesion on her left leg, alongside bruise-like lesions on her extremities. Histologic examination revealed basal cell carcinoma with adenoid-cystic features colliding with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN), a rare and aggressive hematologic malignancy. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed BPDCN, with markers such as CD123, CD4, CD56, and TCL1, and a high proliferation index (Ki67 >90%). This represents the first reported case of a collision lesion comprising ade

A 72-year-old woman presented with a 3 × 2 × 1-mm right lower eyelid micronodular, whitish solid lesion at the nasal eyelid margin that had caused madarosis. Local excision led to the microscopic discovery of 2 epidermoid cysts, one of which harbored a basal cell carcinoma arising from its orthokeratinizing squamous cell lining. Poral openings indicated that the cysts represented follicular infundibular ectasias. BER-EP4-positive immunostaining confirmed the basal cell nature of the neoplasm. This is the first example in the eyelid of an epidermoid cyst displaying malignant transformation. No

Benign salivary gland neoplasms are infrequent in dogs and cats. The available literature is scarce, relying on scattered case series and case reports. The histologic subclassification of these neoplasms in humans is correlated with tumor outcome and is used as a template for the veterinary species. To better describe the clinical and histologic features of these benign epithelial tumors in dogs and cats, we performed a retrospective multi-institutional study and retrieved 16 benign epithelial salivary neoplasms from 11 dogs and 5 cats. In dogs, the sex distribution was 7 castrated males, 3 sp

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign epithelial tumor of the salivary gland, displaying monomorphic basaloid cells without a myxochondroid component, representing 1-3% of all salivary gland neoplasms seen predominantly in women over 50 years of age. It is uncommon in young adults. Cytodiagnosis of basaloid tumors chiefly basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland, is extremely challenging. The cytological differential diagnoses range from benign to malignant, neoplastic to non- neoplastic lesions. Histopathological examination is a must for definitive diagnosis, as these entities differ in

An increasing proportion of new cancers is registered in patients who have received a previous cancer diagnosis. As data are inconsistent across studies, we provided information for populations long covered by valid cancer registration. Data were derived from the Swiss cancer Registries of Vaud and Neuchâtel (885,000 inhabitants). Patients diagnosed with a new malignancy (except skin basal and squamous cell carcinomas) during the period 2005-2010 were included. Over the period 2005-2010, 24,859 patients were registered with incident cancer. Of these, 3127 (13%) had multiple primary cancers and

Skin lesions of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Bowen's disease were immunohistochemically examined using the 1-2B7B monoclonal antibody, which recognizes a 120 kDa polypeptide component found in hemidesmosomes of normal human epidermis and hemidesmosome-like adhesion junction of vascular endothelial cells, to disclose altered characteristics of the interface between the tumor cell aggregate and stromal tissues of the epidermal neoplasms. In BCC, 1-2B7B antigen was rarely expressed at the tumor cell aggregate-stromal tissue interface, where poorly developed hemide

BACKGROUND: Until the 1990s, basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was viewed as the most common epithelial neoplasm developing in association with nevus sebaceus (NS). Currently, trichoblastoma is thought of as the most prevalent basaloid neoplasm in NS. The follicular stem cell marker pleckstrin homology-like domain, family A, member 1 (PHLDA1) also known as T-cell death-associated gene 51 (TDAG51) labels trichoepithelioma (TE) but not BCC. Therefore, we explored its usefulness in basaloid neoplasms developing in NS.
METHODS: We studied immunohistochemically PHLDA1 in 10 nodular BCCs, 11 TEs, 11 trich

Colonization of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) by melanoma cells is a unique and uncommonly reported cutaneous entity. We describe a bluish nodule on the left forearm found during routine skin cancer surveillance examination with suspicious dermatoscopic findings including central-blue-white veil, sparse atypical dots, and a surrounding pink vascular blush with focal irregular tan-brown pigmentation at the periphery. Histopathology demonstrated a pigmented BCC with an overlying and adjacent melanoma in situ (MIS), as well as colonization of the BCC nodule by melanoma cells. We performed a review o

The relationship of basal lamina, a form of specialised extracellular matrix which separates epithelial cells and other cell types from adjacent stroma, to the behaviour of malignant neoplasms of epithelial origin is not well understood. However, it is widely acknowledged that the properties of local invasion and metastasis of carcinomas are linked to extracellular matrix (including basal lamina) changes. In the present study, the distribution of the major basal lamina components, type IV collagen and laminin, in normal rat tongue mucosa and experimentally induced oral carcinomas was investiga

Bronchiolar adenoma (BA) of the lung is a rare benign neoplasm. Because of a chest abnormal shadow indicated by health checkup, a 77-year-old female nonsmoker underwent computed tomography, revealing an 8 mm ground glass nodule in the peripheral field of the right lower lobe. Wedge resection of the nodule was performed, with a frozen diagnosis of primary lung adenocarcinoma. The localized, 8 × 4 × 3 mm-sized, jelly-like mass microscopically revealed a lepidic-growing lesion composed of ciliated columnar cells, mucous cells and basal cells surrounded by mucin pool. Neither nuclear atypia nor mi

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma is a benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. This tumor usually arises in the major glands, with the parotid being the most frequent site of occurrence, while it is rare in the minor salivary glands. We report a case of basal cell adenoma of a minor salivary gland on the palate.
CASE: The patient was a 68-year-old man. Intraoral examination revealed a mass measuring 20 × 20 mm that was elastic-hard, dark violet, non-ulcerated, and covered the normal mucosa. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) both showed a mass situated in front of the

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine cancer which almost always exhibits the cytokeratin (CK)20+/thyroid transcription factor (TTF)-1- immunophenotype. MCC may occur concurrently with squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen disease, and/or basal cell carcinoma (BCC), with some evidence that MCCs which occur in conjunction with other neoplasms exhibit different immunophenotypes compared to pure MCC cases. We present a case of CK20-/TTF-1+ MCC concurrent with Bowen disease and BCC, and discuss possible differences in the pathogenesis of pure vs combined MCC.

BACKGROUND: Infiltration of the tumor microenvironment by macrophages plays a key role in the progression of breast cancer (BC), modulating tumor growth, angiogenesis, immunosuppression, and metastasis. However, the association between macrophage infiltration levels and the clinicopathological characteristics of BC, including the molecular subtype of the neoplasm and receptor status, remains insufficiently studied.
AIM: To investigate the relationship between macrophage infiltration in BC tissue and the extent of tumor spread as well as the molecular profile of the neoplasms.

Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease characterized by the development of multiple trichoepitheliomas and cylindromas. Among other neoplasms that may also occur in Brooke-Spiegler syndrome are basal cell carcinomas and spiradenomas. Spiradenomas and cylindromas have so many features in common that they have been regarded as variants of the same neoplasm. This assumption was supported by the occurrence of both types of lesions in Brooke-Spiegler syndrome. We report a case of Brooke-Spiegler syndrome in which spiradenomas were found in the immediate vicinity of tr

The authors illustrate two neoplasms arising in the pretibial soft tissue that are histologically identical to adamantinoma of the long bones. The tumors developed in a 24-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man. Both were treated by local excision. Histologically, one tumor had a tubular pattern and one was composed of spindled, basaloid cells. One patient is free of disease after 14 months and one developed two recurrences after three and eight years, with the second recurrence invading the underlying tibia. Soft tissue adamantinoma may be confused with a wide range of neoplasms, including syno

Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare neoplasm accounting for only 2.9% of all salivary gland neoplasms. BCAC involving palatal minor salivary glands are exceedingly rare, and only 10 cases have been reported in the literature. The treatment of choice is surgical excision. Here, we report a case of a 55-year-old male patient with massive BCAC of palatal minor salivary gland extending into the maxillary sinus. This is the first case of BCAC treated by radiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. A follow-up check conducted after 14-months showed good prognosis.
