Ovarian cancer is a neoplasm with high mortality rate. Its progression is mostly asymptomatic, which results in its first diagnosis in a late stage of the disease. Currently there are no reliable diagnostic methods for early detection of ovarian cancer. Molecular mechanisms leading to its development are not yet fully discovered. Recent studies show that mesothelin gene is up-regulated in patients with serous ovarian cancer. Mesothelin is a glycoprotein found in cell membranes of mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum, pericardium and pleura. Association of mesothelin in the development of as

Lymphatic stomata are small openings of lymphatic capillaries on the free surface of the mesothelium. The peritoneal cavity, pleural cavity, and pericardial cavity are connected with lymphatic system via these small openings, which have the function of active absorption. The ultrastructure of the lymphatic stomata and their absorption from the body cavities are important clinically, such as ascites elimination, neoplasm metastasis, and inflammatory reaction. The lymphatic stomata play an important role in the physiological and pathological conditions. Our previous study indicated for the first

Malignant mesothelioma is a neoplasm that can arise from the mesothelial surface of the pleura and tends to be locally invasive. Various techniques have been used for diagnosis and include thoracentesis with pleural fluid cytology, closed pleural biopsy, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. Thoracentesis and closed pleural biopsy can often establish the presence of malignancy, but frequently do not provide sufficient tissue to definitively diagnose malignant mesothelioma. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery biopsy has higher sensitivity for establishing the diagnosis, but is a more invas

The presence of long, slender, often branching microvilli on cell surfaces is a characteristic feature of malignant and benign mesothelial cells. However, these typical microvilli are seen only in better-differentiated lumens within epithelial areas of malignant mesotheliomas. Presented here are the clinical and ultrastructural findings in a biphasic malignant mesothelioma that lacked lumens, but possessed very long microvilli. These invaginated deeply into the cytoplasm of neighboring tumor cells, as well as into the surrounding stromal matrix. The tumor cells had well-formed intercellular de

Fumarate hydratase (FH)-deficient renal cell carcinomas are rare neoplasms characterized by wide morphologic heterogeneity and pathogenetic mutations in the FH gene. They often show aggressive behavior with rapid diffusion to distant organs, so novel therapeutic scenarios have been explored, including EGFR inhibitors and PD-L1 expression for targeted immunotherapy. Herein, we investigated a series of 11 primary FH-deficient renal cell carcinomas and 7 distant metastases to evaluate tumor heterogeneity even in metastatic sites and estimate the specific spread rates to various organs. Furthermor

We describe 22 examples of a novel, usually paratubal, adnexal tumor associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in nearly 50% of cases that harbored STK11 alterations in all tested (n=21). The patients ranged from 17 to 66 years (median=39 y) and the tumors from 4.5 to 25.5 cm (median=11 cm). Most (n=18) were paratubal, with metastases noted in 11/22 (50%) and recurrences in 12/15 (80%). Morphologically, they were characterized by interanastomosing cords and trabeculae of predominantly epithelioid cells, set in a variably prominent myxoid to focally edematous stroma, that often merged to form tubu

Primary serosal neoplasms demonstrate a wide spectrum of growth patterns and biologic aggressiveness. The adenomatoid tumor is uniformly benign, whereas the diffuse malignant mesothelioma pursues a downhill clinical course, rapidly leading to fatality. The cystic peritoneal mesothelioma occupies an intermediate position characterized by persistent and/or recurrent disease but without progression to death. The distinction of an epithelial mesothelioma from metastatic adenocarcinoma remains a challenging problem. In the vast majority of cases, this can be accomplished by combining routine histoc

UNLABELLED: We report a case of peritoneal biphasic mesothelioma with cystic areas in a patient with professional exposure to asbestos. It showed focal epithelial glandular and papillary proliferations, also presenting fluid filled cysts, whose wall consisted of a proliferation of spindle cells. Atypia and mitoses were very scanty. EMA, vimentin, CK5/6, D2-40, calretinin and P53 were positive and desmin was negative in both epithelial and spindle areas, including the ones surrounding the cystic spaces. These findings gave an essential aid in the differential diagnosis with a benign cystic meso

We present the first reported case of papillary cystadenofibroma of the epididymis. The tumor occurred in a 46-year-old man. The mass was 3.7 cm and included a hemorrhagic fluid-filled cyst. Microscopically, stromal-filled papillae were lined by low cuboidal to columnar epithelium. Epithelial cells were reactive for cytokeratin 7, cytokeratins AE1/3, and focally in the apical cytoplasm for CD10. Focal CD10 reactivity was also noted in the stroma. The lesion was negative for alpha-fetoprotein. These findings ruled out other lesions, including metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

A neutered male Doberman dog was presented because of recurrent aseptic peritonitis, the cause of which was not elicited pre-mortem despite multiple attempts. The dog's condition progressed over the course of ~8 mo until he was euthanized due to declining quality of life, despite medical interventions. A diagnosis of canine mesothelioma was made on necropsy. Canine mesothelioma is rare and difficult to diagnose definitively, often relying on a combination of clinical signs, imaging, and cytopathology to support a suspected diagnosis. There is no standardized treatment, but because chemotherapy

Of 21 primary peritoneal, omental, and mesenteric tumors, 14 were cysts and seven were solid. Most of the cysts were omental-mesenteric lymphangiomas; the sole exception was a cystic mesothelioma in a newborn. The solid tumors included three multicentric hamartomas, three sarcomas of undetermined histogenesis, and one immature teratoma. Since cystic lymphangiomas carry a good prognosis following surgical excision, they must be distinguished from cysts of mesothelial origin. Solid hamartomas may simulate malignant tumors because of multicentricity and immature tissue composition. Although perit

This review article examines some new and some problem areas in mesothelial pathology, four of which are discussed, as follows. (1) The concept of mesothelioma in situ: this lesion is defined as a single layer of bland mesothelial cells without evidence of invasion, but that have lost BAP1 and/or MTAP by immunohistochemistry. Benign reactions can exactly mimic mesothelioma in situ, but a hint to the correct diagnosis is a story of recurrent pleural effusions/ascites of unknown aetiology without radiological or direct visual evidence of tumour. (2) The nature of well-differentiated papillary me

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary disease with germline mutation in a DNA mismatch repair gene, most often presenting with colorectal and/or endometrial carcinomas; however, the spectrum of Lynch syndrome-associated tumors is expanding. In this article, we report a case of a primary peritoneal epithelioid mesothelioma that developed in a Lynch syndrome patient 10 months after diagnosis of uterine endometrioid adenocarcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a Lynch syndrome patient with metachronous uterine endometrioid adenocarcinoma and primary peritoneal mesothelioma.

Splenic cysts are relatively rare entities. The differential diagnosis for these lesions includes parasite infections, results of previous trauma or infarction, congenital forms, primitive splenic neoplasm or cystic metastasis. They can be either symptomatic, causing mainly abdominal pain, or asymptomatic, thus being diagnosed as in incidental finding during radiological examination for other clinical reasons: among these a raised serum level of CA 19-9 can be a case. It has been demonstrated that epidermoid and mesothelial congenital cyst can be associated with a pathological level of this tu

INTRODUCTION: Mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm arising from mesothelial surfaces with the malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) as the most common form. Secondline chemotherapy in MPM is still controversial and in this study we evaluated whether it is superior to best supportive care.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 51 patients with MPM from Acibadem Kayseri Hospital, Kayseri Training and Research Hospital and Erciyes University were analyzed retrospectively. The patients treated with secondline chemotherapies (SLCT) were compared with those treated with best supportive care (BSC) for overall

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) a rare neoplasm linked to asbestos exposure is characterized by a poor prognosis. Soluble mesothelin is currently considered the most specific diagnostic biomarker. The aim of the study was to identify novel biomarkers by proteomic analysis of two MPM cell lines secretome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The protein patterns of MPM cells secretome were examined and compared to a non-malignant mesothelial cell line using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled to mass spectrometry. Serum levels of candidate biomarkers were determined in MPM patients

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and highly drug resistant tumor arising from the mesothelial surfaces of the lung pleura. The standard method to confirm MPM is the tedious, time-consuming cytological examination of cancer biopsy. Biomarkers that are detectable in pleural effusion or patient serum are reasonable options to provide a faster and noninvasive diagnostic approach. As yet, the current biomarkers for MPM lack specificity and sensitivity to discriminate this neoplasm from other lung tumors. CD44, a multifunctional surface receptor has been implicated in tumor progression

BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm that generally develops in the pleural or peritoneal cavity. Distant metastases are common; it rarely metastatizes to the head and neck region.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old white man, a non-smoker, was treated with chemotherapy, surgery and radiation for a malignant pleural mesothelioma. Seven months after the last treatment, he developed a right submandibular enlargement: clinical examination, ultrasound and computerized tomography scans revealed a salivary gland hypertrophy. Anti-inflammatory and antibiotic treatment was then started
