Indeterminate dendritic cell neoplasm accompanied by eosinophilic pneumonia successfully treated by systemic steroid therapy: Report of the first case with muscular and parotid involvement and review of published work.

A 34-year-old Japanese man presented with an indolent nodule on the right flank. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen demonstrated a large nodule measuring 55 mm × 50 mm in the abdominal oblique muscle layer of the right flank, and several small nodules were seen in the muscle layer throughout the body and subcutaneous tissue of the lower abdomen. 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed nodular lesions in the bilateral parotid glands, bilateral cervical lymph nodes and lower lobe of the right lung. Intermittently, ground-glass shadows developed

Fine needle aspiration cytology of renal and retroperitoneal angiomyolipoma. Report of two cases with cytologic findings and clinicopathologic pitfalls in diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm that usually arises in the kidney, although rare extrarenal examples have been documented. CASES: Two cases of the neoplasm occurred in which fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies were performed. The first patient was a 73-year-old female with a history of breast carcinoma who presented with a large retroperitoneal mass. Transabdominal FNA biopsy revealed multiple fragments of spindle-shaped mesenchymal cells, a few of which showed marked cellular atypia with occasional cells containing fat vacuoles, producing a lipoblastlike appeara

Oral spindle cell neoplasms: a review of 307 cases.

The infrequent exposure of pathologists to soft tissue spindle cell neoplasms coupled with overlapping histologic patterns can often make diagnosis challenging. We reviewed all nonodontogenic spindle cell neoplasms seen between 1982 and 2002 (86,162 total accessions). Diagnoses were reclassified according to current standards supplemented with immunohistochemistry. Of the 307 neoplasms reviewed (0.36% of total accessions), neural tumors were the most common benign entities, accounting for 21% of total cases. Kaposi's sarcoma was the most common malignancy, accounting for 67% of all cases. Diag

Breast myofibroblastoma in a young woman: a case report.

Myofibroblastoma (MFB) is an uncommon benign mesenchymal tumor that may arise in several organs and tissue. Although most of reported cases were located in the breast, it is extremely rare, representing less than 1% of breast tumor. MFB has predominantly seen in elderly men, but some cases have been described in menopausal women. This lesion is a stromal tumor which has many morphologic variants including cellular, collagenized, epithelioid, palisaded, lipomatous, hemangiopericytoma-like, and infiltrant features. Even if its incidence has recently increased due to the mammary screening, only f

Hepatic angiomyolipoma.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare, benign, hepatic mesenchymal neoplasm found in both males and females, and most commonly in adult females. Angiomyolipoma occurs most commonly in the kidneys. The liver represents the second most frequent site of involvement. Hepatic angiomyolipomas are composed of varying amounts of smooth muscle cells, adipose tissue, and vessels. The smooth muscle cell component is the most specific to the diagnosis. The smooth muscle cells can have varying morphologies and are positive for homatropine methylbromide-45 but are negative for hepatocyte paraffin 1 and S100 prot

Extrauterine RAD51B -Rearranged Soft Tissue Tumors : A Clinicopathologic and Molecular Genetic Study of 10 Cases With Heterogeneous Morphology, Novel Fusions, and a Distinct Methylation Profile.

A subset of uterine smooth muscle tumors and PEComas has been recently shown to harbor RAD51B rearrangement. To date, occurrence of RAD51B -rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms in sites outside the uterus is exceedingly rare. In this study, we describe a series of 10 extrauterine RAD51B -rearranged soft tissue tumors to further expand the clinicopathologic and molecular spectrum of this emerging entity. Patients included 4 males and 6 females with age at presentation ranging from 4 months to 72 years (median: 53.5 y). Seven tumors occurred in the somatic soft tissues, including the scalp, nuchal r

Multidetector CT for Evaluation of the Extrapleural Space.

The extrapleural space (EPS) is an anatomic space at the periphery of the chest that can be involved in a number of disease processes. This space lies between the inner surface of the ribs and the parietal pleura and contains adipose tissue, loose connective tissue, lymph nodes, vessels, endothoracic fascia, and the innermost intercostal muscle. It is often overlooked on cross-sectional imaging studies and almost invariably overlooked on conventional radiographic studies. At conventional radiography, the EPS occasionally can be seen when there is extrapleural fat proliferation, which might be

Lipomatous hemangiopericytoma. A histologic, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical study of a unique variant of hemangiopericytoma.

We report three cases of a unique, previously undescribed soft tissue tumor composed of mature adipocytes and hemangiopericytomatous areas, for which we propose the term lipomatous hemangiopericytoma. The tumors occurred in adults and were located in the sinonasal area, the soft tissue of the shoulder, and the retroperitoneum. The tumors ranged in size from 4 to 10 cm in greatest diameter and grossly were solid and ranged from tan to yellow. Histologically, they were composed of a variable admixture of benign lipomatous and hemangiopericytomatous components. Immunohistochemically, they stained

Case report of cavernous haemangioma in the supraorbital region in the extraconal space: A rare location.

INTRODUCTION: Cavernous haemangioma is the most common benign non-infiltrative neoplasm of the orbit. Most cavernous haemangiomas are intraconal and lateral in location. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of a cavernous haemangioma with an unusual location in the supraorbital region of the orbit, presenting with soft tissue swelling. DISCUSSION: Cavernous haemangiomas are the most common benign non-infiltrative neoplasms of the orbit and have a slowly progressive mass effect. A slowly progressive proptosis is the typical presenting symptom. Extraocular muscle impairment and impaired visual

Clinical and histopathological findings of a rare sinonasal glomangiopericytoma.

Glomangiopericytoma is a rare vascular neoplasm of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses that occurs during the sixth or seventh decade of life. It is categorized as a borderline tumor with low malignant potential and classified as a distinct entity of sinonasal tumors with perivascular myoid phenotype by the World Health Organization (WHO). We report the case of a 50-year-old woman with nasal obstruction and severe epistaxis. The nasal sinuses computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a 3.1 cm soft tissue mass occupying the upper part of the left nasal cavit

Atypical presentation of cutaneous meningioma.

Cutaneous meningiomas are rare tumors of ectopic meningeal tissue in the dermis or subcutis and are most commonly located on the scalp and around the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. We present a case of cutaneous meningioma with an unusual presentation on the upper arm, but with positivity for epithelial membrane antigen to support the diagnosis of meningioma. Lack of pancytokeratin AE1/3 and p63 allowed us to rule out a keratinocytic tumor, such as squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. The absence of smooth muscle actin, FXIIIa, CD163, and CD34 allowed us to rule out a leiomyoma, der

Sclerosing variant of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor in the female genital organs.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComas), other than angiomyolipoma, clear cell 'sugar' tumor of the lung, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis, is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that arises in the soft tissue and visceral organs. We report herein two cases of sclerosing PEComa; a distinctive variant of PEComa, which is characterized by extensive stromal hyalinization, occurring in the uterus and broad ligament. The patients were 34- and 51-year-old females with no family history of tuberous sclerosis complex. Macroscopically, the tumors had white to gray cut surfaces and were microscopically c

Thyroid spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE): case report and review.

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like element (SETTLE) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid, occurring predominantly in children, adolescents, and young adults. SETTLE usually presents itself as a thyroid mass, without metastases at diagnosis. It is believed to derive from branchial pouch or thymic remnant tissue showing primitive thymic differentiation. This article reports the clinical, cytological, histological and immunohistochemical features of a SETTLE in a 3-year-old girl. Microscopic exam revealed a nodular, highly cellular neoplasm displayed in the classic biphasic pattern,

Fibrous inflammatory polyps of the ileum and cecum: review of five cases with emphasis on differentiation from mesenchymal neoplasm.

Five case histories of patients with fibrous inflammatory polyps of the ileocecum are reported. Clinical impression in all five cases was that these tumefactions represented gastrointestinal malignancies. Gross pathologic examination revealed polypoid intramural growths ranging from 2.5 to 7.0 cm in greatest dimension. Transmural desmoplasia through the bowel wall into subserosal fat was initially thought to be indicative of neoplastic invasion. Microscopic evaluation revealed a fibroblastic and vascular proliferative process. Pseudosarcomatous changes were identified in cellular fibroblastic

Nonmuscle Tissues Contribution to Cancer Cachexia.

Cachexia is a syndrome associated with cancer, characterized by body weight loss, muscle and adipose tissue wasting, and inflammation, being often associated with anorexia. In spite of the fact that muscle tissue represents more than 40% of body weight and seems to be the main tissue involved in the wasting that occurs during cachexia, recent developments suggest that tissues/organs such as adipose (both brown and white), brain, liver, gut, and heart are directly involved in the cachectic process and may be responsible for muscle wasting. This suggests that cachexia is indeed a multiorgan synd

Large retroperitoneal mass: A case of an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a group of rare malignant tumors arising from mesenchymal stem cells. There are more than 60 different types of neoplasms that fall under the umbrella of STS, including tumors that originate from cartilage, adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, or connective tissue, among many other tissue types. One particular type of high-grade aggressive STS is the undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS), formerly known as the malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH). There has historically been much debate about the classification and differentiation of UPS from other types of sarc

Smooth Muscle Tumors of the Uterus at MRI: Focus on Leiomyomas and FIGO Classification.

Leiomyomas are smooth muscle tumors of the uterus and are the most common uterine neoplasm. Although leiomyomas are usually asymptomatic, they can manifest with symptoms such as pain or uterine bleeding. Leiomyomas are classified on the basis of their anatomic location and morphology. Localization of leiomyomas relative to the endometrium, myometrium, and uterine serosa with use of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification system is helpful for guiding management in symptomatic patients. The FIGO system is a practical and universally accepted approach for

[Gastrointestinal stromal tumors: conceptual evolution].

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) constitute the largest category of primary nonepithelial neoplasms of the stomach and small bowel. They represent about 1-2% from all neoplasms of the digestive tract. They occur most commonly in the stomach and small bowel, but small series of comparable tumors have also been reported in all the other parts of the tubular gastrointestinal tract, including esophagus, colon, rectum and anus. They can also involve omentum, mesentery, uterus, retroperitoneum, mesocolon and soft tissues. Originally recognized in 1960 by Martin et. al. as a distinctive type o

Tracheal airway obstruction induced by a large glomangioma: discussion of management and literature review.

Glomus tumours (GTs) are rare benign neoplasms arising from modified smooth muscle cells (SMCs) surrounding arteriovenous anastomosis. Typically, these tumours are found in the distal portion of the digits, especially under the fingernails. A GTs originating from the trachea is extremely rare. We are presenting the case of a Caucasian man in his early 80s, presenting with upper airway obstruction and massive bleeding caused by a large tracheal tumour to which final diagnosis of glomangioma of the trachea was retained. Methods of diagnostics, management and follow-up are documented. The inciden
