Gallus gallus domesticus are resistant to infection with Neospora caninum tachyzoites of the NC-1 strain.

The aim of this study was to experimentally evaluate infection in Gallus gallus domesticus with Neospora caninum tachyzoites of the NC-1 strain. Experimental infection was conducted in 90-day-old chickens, embryonated eggs and bioassays in dogs. In the first experiment, poults were randomly divided into four groups. Groups I and II were provided feed with coccidiostat, whereas groups III and IV received feed without coccidiostat. When the poults from groups I and III reached 90 days of age, they received a subcutaneous inoculation of N. caninum. Once the hens entered their egg-laying period, d

A survey of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infecting house mice from a hybrid zone.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are closely related coccidian parasites infecting a wide range of wild and domestic animals as intermediate hosts, and rodents serve as important reservoir hosts during the life cycles of these parasites. The present study is aimed at identifying T. gondii and N. caninum infection in 360 wild house mice (Mus musculus) collected across the Czech-German border, where 2 genetically distinct mouse subspecies meet and hybridize. Toxoplasma gondii or N. caninum DNA was detected in the brains of individual mice by PCR, but mixed infections were never observed. N

Effects of age and breed on the prevalence of Neospora caninum in commercial dairy cattle from Pakistan.

Neospora caninum is a major cause of bovine abortion worldwide. A serological survey was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of exposure to N. caninum in dairy cattle based on age and breed from Punjab and Sindh provinces, Pakistan. Serum samples from 641 animals from 12 herds from Punjab (n = 7) and Sindh (n = 5) provinces were tested for antibodies against N. caninum using a commercially available competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Positive reactions to N. caninum were seen in 277 (43%) of the 641 of the samples. Seropositive animals were present in all 12 herds. Animals

Seroprevalence of Neospora caninum and Brucella abortus in dairy cattle herds with high abortion rates.

The protozoan Neospora caninum and the bacterium Brucella abortus are well-recognized causes of abortion in dairy cattle. Serum samples (n  =  240) from aborting (n  =  141) and at-risk (n  =  99) animals from 5 herds with high abortion rates in Punjab Province, Pakistan, were tested for antibodies to N. caninum using monoclonal antibody-based ELISA and for antibodies to B. abortus using the serum agglutination test. Antibodies to N. caninum and B. abortus were detected in 105 (43.8%) and 135 (56.3%) cattle, respectively. Prevalences of antibodies to N. caninum and B. abortus were higher in ab

The use of beef bull semen reduced the risk of abortion in Neospora-seropositive dairy cows.

There is an evidence that the epidemiology of neosporosis differs in dairy and beef cattle, such that beef cattle carry a lower risk of abortion. The aim of the present study was to establish whether artificial insemination using semen from beef bulls could reduce the risk of abortion in dairy cows seropositive for the Neospora caninum parasite. Our study was based on yearly serological screening for neosporosis and on the confirmation of Neospora infection in aborted fetuses in two high-producing dairy herds with a mean 28% seroprevalence of N. caninum antibodies. The study population compris

Examination of the activities of 43 chemotherapeutic agents against Neospora caninum tachyzoites in cultured cells.

Neospora caninum causes serious disease in dogs, and it, or a similar parasite, is a major cause of abortion in cattle. Little is known about the susceptibility of this protozoan to antimicrobial agents. We studied several antimicrobial agents to determine which classes might have activity against this parasite. We also determined whether activity of such agents was coccidiocidal or coccidiostatic. A 2-day of treatment, monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassay and a 5-day of treatment, cell culture flask (CCF), lesion-based assay were developed to examine the ability of test agents to inhi

Serological Evidence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in Gray Wolves (Canis lupus) in Poland.

PURPOSE: The gray wolf (Canis lupus) has been protected throughout Poland since 1998, which has allowed for the rapid recovery of the species across the country. Wolves are often exposed to viral and bacterial pathogens through contact with peridomestic and domestic host species. Additionally, they may serve as hosts for a wide range of parasites due to the consumption of infected prey and exposure to environmental contamination. This investigation aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of two closely related protozoan parasites, Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii, among gray wolves based on

[Seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in Hérens cows in the canton Valais - A prospective, representative field study].

Neospora caninum is a global cause of abortion in cattle. Infection occurs either vertically - from the mother to the foetus - or horizontally through the oral ingestion of -oocysts via contaminated feed or water. Infected cows may abort or give birth to seropositive calves that are already infected in utero. Both the dams and their calves remain permanently infected. As Hérens cows often have a high emotional value for their owners, animals are often re-bred after abortions in an attempt to achieve a new pregnancy. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum

A Comparison of Stage Conversion in the Coccidian Apicomplexans Toxoplasma gondii, Hammondia hammondi, and Neospora caninum.

Stage conversion is a critical life cycle feature for several Apicomplexan parasites as the ability to switch between life forms is critical for replication, dissemination, pathogenesis and ultimately, transmission to a new host. In order for these developmental transitions to occur, the parasite must first sense changes in their environment, such as the presence of stressors or other environmental signals, and then respond to these signals by initiating global alterations in gene expression. As our understanding of the genetic components required for stage conversion continues to broaden, we
