OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility, safety and results of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) in ectopically located kidneys and in patients with musculoskeletal deformities.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen such patients underwent PNL between June 2005 and May 2008. Mean stone size was 27.4 mm (16-37 mm). Six patients had severe kyphoscoliosis, 2 patients each had achondroplasia, cross-fused ectopia and pelvic ectopic kidney, and 1 patient had thoracic kidney. All had a preoperative CT scan of the abdomen. Preoperative ultrasound- or CT-guided percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) was done in 10 pat

BACKGROUND: A 50-year-old man presented to an outpatient urology clinic with left-sided flank pain. He had received treatment for a left renal pelvis calculus 5 years earlier; shock wave lithotripsy had been unsuccessful and ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy had left the patient with a 2 mm residual stone fragment. The fragment was deemed clinically insignificant, and the patient remained asymptomatic without any further follow-up.
INVESTIGATIONS: Physical examination, CT of the abdomen and pelvis, and complete metabolic evaluation.
DIAGNOSIS: Left lower pole renal calculus and idiopathic hype

OBJECTIVES: To review our experience performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) on patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction with special attention paid to the risks of surgical complications and stone recurrence. Patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction with or without urinary diversion are at increased risk of urolithiasis, surgical complications, and recurrent stone disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the 23 patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction who underwent PNL at our institution. Neurologic lesions included spina bifida, traumatic spinal cord injury, exstrophy

PURPOSE: We report our experience with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in children, and evaluate its early and late anatomical and functional results.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 65 children with renal calculi were treated with PCNL. Patient age at operation ranged from 9 months to 16 years (mean +/- SD of 5.9 +/- 0.9 years), and 27 (41.5%) were younger than 5 years. Seven patients had bilateral renal stones and, therefore, the number of kidneys treated by PCNL was 72. The patients were followed regularly every 3 months during year 1 and every 6 months thereafter. Renal scans using

With the development of the ultrasonically guided punction of the kidney it has become possible nowadays to achieve direct access to the kidney without much difficulty. The puncture tract can be widened and used for the entrance of the so-called nephroscope, which enables the sitting and extraction of renal calculi, which are not able to drain away by themselves. The calculi are removed through the shaft by small forceps. Larger calculi are chiefly removed by means of ultrasonic probes or electro-hydraulic shock waves. This method of percutaneous lithotripsy or litholapaxy is also suitable for

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the gold standard for managing large renal calculi; however, data on its long-term efficacy in resource-limited settings such as Yemen are scarce. We evaluated the outcomes and complications of PCNL surgery in resource limited settings over a nine-year period in a high-volume centre in Ibb City, Yemen.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1,458 patients who underwent PCNL between October 2016 and June 2025. Data included patient demographics, stone characteristics, surgical techniques (standard, mini-PCNL, and supine), and outcom

INTRODUCTION: Upper pole access in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) provides a straight tract to the ureter, resulting in easier placement of a guidewire to the ureter, good exposure of the pelvis, calices, and upper ureter, and comfortable manipulations. However, despite these benefits, upper pole access is usually avoided because of the risk of chest complications in both pediatric and adult patients.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the safety and morbidity of single upper pole access in pediatric patients undergoing PCNL.
STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively reviewed patients aged ≤17 year

Background: Colonic injury represents a rare complication of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Injury of the small bowel is very rare, with only anecdotal case reports in the literature. We report here a rare PCNL complication of jejunal perforation without concomitant colonic injury. Case Presentation: A 45-year-old male underwent PCNL for multiple left kidney stones. At the beginning of the procedure, we faced difficulty in achieving access, but after that the procedure was straightforward and ended smoothly. However, from the third day, the postoperative course became stormy with progres

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment modality used for the extraction of large renal stones, or multiple calculi or stones resistant to shock wave lithotripsy. The General Anaesthesia (GA) is the standard modality for PCNL. However, few studies conclude that Spinal Anaesthesia (SA) can be an alternative method of anaesthesia with similar incidence of complications.
AIM: In our study we evaluated the feasibility of spinal anaesthesia in terms of intraoperative and postoperative results in patients undergoing PCNL.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The total 1298 PCNL operat

To evaluate safety and efficacy of minipercutaneous nephrolithotomy (Mini-PNL) in management of stones in different types of renal anomalies. Patients with stones ≥2 cm or SWL-resistant stones in anomalous-kidneys treated by Mini-PNL between March 2010 and September 2012 were included prospectively. Mini-PNL was done under regional anesthesia in prone position with fluoroscopic guidance through 18 Fr sheath using semirigid ureteroscope (8.5/11.5 Fr) and pneumatic lithotripter. All patients were followed-up for 2-3 years. Stone-free rate was defined as absence of residual fragments ≥2 mm. Stude
