A search of the English-language medical literature found only two cases in which expansion of an osteochondroma into the lumbar spinal canal caused sciatica. We report another two cases of spinal nerve root compression by solitary lumbar spinal canal osteochondromas: in a 56-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman with no history of hereditary multiple exostoses. Osteochondromas compressing the spinal nerve root were seen at the inferior articular processes of the lumbar vertebrae by computed tomography (CT), three-dimensional reconstruction of CT scans, myelography, and magnetic resonance imagi

Pituitary macroadenoma usually presents with visual field defects. Oculomotor nerve palsy is a rare presentation, and usually a sign of para-sellar growth and cavernous sinus extension. The oculomotor nerve is more susceptible to laterally transmitted pressure by pituitary mass expansion because of its anatomical location. A slow onset oculomotor nerve palsy results from either gradual compression of the nerve in the sinus wall or direct infiltration of the nerve by the pituitary tumor. We are reporting a unique case of a 68-year-old African American patient who presented to an ophthalmology c

The effects of acute volume expansion and hemorrhage on renal nerve activity and renal vascular resistance were examined in chronically instrumented conscious dogs. In six conscious dogs, when the blood volume was expanded by 18 ml/kg, the mean arterial pressure increased by 14 +/- 3 mmHg, mean left atrial pressure increased by 5.3 +/- 0.7 mmHg, and renal nerve activity decreased by 87 +/- 3%, while the renal blood flow was not altered significantly and renal vasoconstriction occurred, i.e., the calculated renal vascular resistance increased by 12 +/- 4% from 0.49 +/- 0.05 mmHg/ml/min. Cavernous malformations (CMs) are found throughout the CNS but are relatively uncommon in the spine. In this report, the authors describe a giant CM with the imaging appearance of an aggressive, invasive, expansive tumor in the cervical spine. The intradural extramedullary portion of the tumor originated from a cervical nerve root; histologically, the lesion was identified as an intraneural CM. Most of the tumor extended into the paraspinal tissues. The tumor was also epidural, intraosseous, and osteolytic and had completely encased cervical nerve roots, peripheral nerves, branches of the brac

Schwannomas (neurilemomas) are benign tumors that arise from Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. The most commonly involved nerves that cause neuro-ophthalmic manifestations are cranial nerves V and VIII. In this series of three women, schwannomas presented as intraconal masses that mimicked a cavernous hemangioma, a superior orbital mass transgressing the superior orbital fissure, and an expansive frontal lobe mass with clinical symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure. Although all three complained of visual blurring, none of our patients presented with Vth or VIIIth

The incidence of bone metastases (BMs) from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is relatively low compared to those of other cancers, but it has increased recently, especially in Asian countries. Typically, BMs from HCC appear radiologically as osteolytic, destructive, and expansive components with large, bulky soft-tissue masses. These soft-tissue masses are unique to bone metastases from HCC and often replace the normal bone matrix and exhibit expansive growth. They often compress the peripheral nerves, spinal cord, or cranial nerves, causing not only bone pain but also neuropathic pain and neuro

CONTEXT: Malignant neural sheath tumors of the trigeminal nerve affecting the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses are extremely rare. With conventional optical microscopy, their identification is difficult, and it is necessary to confirm them by means of electron microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques.
CASE REPORT: The patient was a 41-year-old woman with a ten-month progressive history of pain followed by painful edema in the left facial region, and with symptoms of bleeding, secretion and nasal obstruction. Studies with imaging methods suggested the presence of an expansive proces

PURPOSE: To evaluate acute and chronic changes in optic nerve head (ONH) structures and intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients receiving intravitreal injections (IVIs) of anti-VEGF.
METHODS: Twenty-nine eyes receiving IVIs for the first time were studied. IOP, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, and ONH structures were evaluated by Spectralis optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging technology. Structures were measured before and 5 min after each one of the three monthly injections of a loading dose treatment. In 13 eyes (44.8%) with more than six IVIs, another evaluat

The trigeminal nerve is the largest of the cranial nerves. It provides sensory input from the face and motor innervation to the muscles of mastication. The facial nerve is the cranial nerve with the longest extracranial course, and its main functions include motor innervation to the muscles of facial expression, sensory control of lacrimation and salivation, control of the stapedial reflex and to carry taste sensation from the anterior two-thirds of the tongue. In order to be able adequately to image and follow the course of these cranial nerves and their main branches, a detailed knowledge of

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced optic neuropathy (RON) is a form of delayed radionecrosis of the anterior visual pathways, which develops within months to years after external cranial irradiation and causes severe and irreversible vision loss. Small series reports have adequately documented its clinical features, but imaging characteristics have been less completely described.
METHODS: We accrued cases from the University of Michigan Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic files and from cases coded as "radiation optic neuropathy" at the University of Michigan Medical Center between 1994 and 2017. All patie

OBJECTIVES: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) exhibited significant clinical heterogeneities. However, the clinical features, radiographic changes, and prognosis of patients with encephalitis-like NIID have yet to be systematically elucidated.
METHODS: Clinical data including medical history, physical examination, and laboratory examinations were collected and analyzed. Skin and sural nerve biopsies were conducted on the patient. Repeat-primed PCR (RP-PCR) and fluorescence amplicon length PCR (AL-PCR) were used to detect the expansion of CGG repeat. We also reviewed the clinical

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is associated with CGG repeat expansion in the NOTCH2NLC gene. Although pure or dominant peripheral neuropathy has been described as a subtype of NIID in a few patients, most NIID patients predominantly show involvements of the central nervous system (CNS). It is necessary to further explore whether these patients have subclinical peripheral neuropathy.
METHODS: Twenty-eight NIID patients, clinically characterized by CNS-dominant involvements, were recruited from two tertiary hospitals. Standard nerve conduction studies we

The threshold of CAG repeat expansion in the HTT gene that causes HD is 36 CAG repeats, although 'superlong' expansions are found in individual neurons in postmortem brains. Previously, we showed that, compared to mice with <250 CAG repeats, onset of disease in R6/2 mice carrying superlong (>440) CAG repeat expansions was delayed, and disease progression was slower. Inclusion pathology also differed from 250 CAG repeat mice, being dominated by a novel kind of extranuclear neuronal inclusion (nENNI) that resembles a class of aggregate seen in patients with the adult onset form of HD. Here, we c

A 56-year-old man with a painful, progressively enlarging pulsatile mass in the bilateral popliteal fossae was diagnosed with a bilateral popliteal artery aneurysm (PAA) and referred to our hospital to undergo surgical therapy. Computed tomographic scanning demonstrated a large, middle-type PAA with a rich mural thrombus in the bilateral popliteal arteries. Following aneurysm exclusion posteriorly, the patient underwent bypass surgery using a ringed polytetrafluoroethylene graft bilaterally. This procedure was chosen to prevent nerve injury caused by mobilization of the adherent nerves and ane

We present an unusual case of tibial nerve compression caused by a true tibial posterior artery aneurysm. A 61-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department due to suspected muscle rupture. He had experienced a sudden, intense right calf pain and swelling that had begun during walking. He had a 6-month-long history of symptoms suggestive to the tibial nerve dysfunction and a month-long history of neurologic finding consistent with the right tibial nerve paresis. An examination of the legs revealed a painful mass in the posterior-medial compartment of the right calf. Emergency ultrasoun

The basal subarachnoid cisterns are expansions of the subarachnoid space and transmit cranial nerves and intracranial vessels. Providing neurosurgeons with key concepts, anatomical landmarks, and techniques can result in safer procedures and better patient outcomes. In this review, we discuss the major basal subarachnoid cisterns including their embryology, history, anatomical descriptions, and use during surgical approaches.

The object of this experimental study was to investigate the influence of low-energy He-Ne laser on the motor nerve cells of the spinal cord. The experimental study included as follws: (1) Four rabbits were used in this experiment. The L5-6 spinal cord segment was irradiated by He-Ne laser percutaneously, the nerve velocity of the comon peroneal nerve was measured in order to determine the function of the spinal motor nerve cells when the peripheral nerve was intact. (2) The common peroneal nerve was transected on one side wothout repair, two weeks after laser irradiation, the grey mater of th

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is unique among CAG/polyglutamine (polyQ) repeat diseases due to dramatic intergenerational instability in repeat length and an associated cone-rod dystrophy retinal degeneration phenotype. SCA7 is caused by a polyQ expansion in the protein ataxin-7. Like other neurodegenerative diseases caused by polyQ expansion mutations, the spectrum of clinical severity and disease progression worsens with increasing polyQ length. Several potential mechanisms for the molecular pathogenesis of polyQ-expanded ataxin-7 have been suggested. These include, but are not limite

The gain of the volume-sensitive cardiopulmonary reflex (VSCR) is impaired in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Sensitivity of VSCR control of efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in SHR is restored when cardiac hypertrophy and hypertension are reduced by enalapril treatment. The present study investigated which of these two parameters, cardiac hypertrophy or hypertension, has more influence on the impairment of VSCR control of RSNA in SHR. Rats (SHR or Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats) were treated with enalapril (10 mg/kg per day; SHRE and WKYE groups, respectively) or hydralazine (5
