Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis with neurocutaneous melanosis.

Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by classical cutaneous and ocular lesions with central nervous system anomalies. We describe an infant with classical encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis characterized by probable naevus psiloliparus, frontal subcutaneous lipomas, ocular limbal dermoids and arachnoid cysts, and ventriculomegaly. He also had giant congenital nevus with leptomeningeal melanosis. This case represents a rare association between encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis and neurocutaneous melanosis.

[Simultaneous occurrence of neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis, acquired as neo-mutations].

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 and tuberous sclerosis are two distinct neurocutaneous syndromes that result of a mutation of tumoral suppressor genes, increasing the risk of tumorigenesis. They both have dominant autosomal hereditariness with half of the cases corresponding to new mutations. They are situations rarely associated. CASE REPORT: A boy without any family history of neurocutaneous disorders who had characteristics of both neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis, as cafe-au-lait patches, six greater than 0.5 cm, macrocephaly, optic nerve glioma, focal alterations of the my

Epileptic disorder as the first neurologic manifestation of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome.

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome is an uncommon neurocutaneous disorder characterized by distinctive vascular malformations on the body surface. Vascular malformations of internal organs (typically the gastrointestinal tract) are also frequently present. However, malformations of the central nervous system have only rarely been described. We report a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome in a 5-month-old boy with cutaneous manifestations characteristic of this process present from birth and multiple cerebral angiomas detected by magnetic resonance imaging. At age 1(1/2) months, the patient sh

Neurofibromatosis type one and West syndrome: a relatively benign association.

Fifteen patients with neurofibromatosis type one (NF1) and West syndrome (WS) were studied. The evolution of WS was clearly different from that seen in the other neurocutaneous syndromes, especially tuberous sclerosis. Steroids were efficacious and spasms disappeared. There was no relapse after discontinuation of steroids and antiepileptic drugs were successfully stopped several years later. Mental outcome was also very good. The association of both conditions does not seem to be a coincidence. WS with NF1 seems remarkably benign and resembles idiopathic WS more than symptomatic WS.

[Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita. Associated abnormalities].

Eight cases of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita are presented and an analysis of associated alterations on seven is done. These abnormalities are mainly asymmetrical body development (hypotrophy of the leg in two cases, hemihypertrophy of body in five), hemihypertrophy of brain with psychomotor retardation in three patients, Nevus flameus on lumbar region in one and syndactylies on hands and feet in one. Inclusion of the disease into neurocutaneous syndromes is suggested and is emphasized the importance of the pediatric and neurological follow-up of these patients.

[A special case of multiple hemangiomas in the head and neck area: a variation of the Maffucci syndrome?].

A 21-year-old patient with multiple hemangiomas in the mouth and in the skin of the neck and a simultaneous enchondromatosis in the hands is described. This congenital mesodermal dysplasia cannot be classified under known syndromes. It is named after Angelo Maffucci and is a combination of an enchondromatosis and multiple haemangiomatosis. Maffucci described this syndrome in 1881. After the presentation of the syndrome and differential diagnostic considerations of other diseases belonging to the neurocutaneous group of dysplasia, the author attempts to classify the patient described.

Celiac disease, phylloid hypomelanosis and autoimmune thyroiditis: a case report.

Pigmentary mosaicism is a term used to encompass all of these different types of pigmentary patterns. Among these mosaic patterns, there have been only a few reports of the phylloid presentation in the literature. On the other hand, autoimmune disorders can be associated with neurocutaneous markers and syndromes. A fifteen-year-old girl was presented for chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain. Her physical examination had determined multiple hypopigmented patches. Finally, she was diagnosed phylloid hypomelanosis together with partial trisomy 13 accompanying celiac disease and autoimmune thyroidi

Hereditary syndromes predisposing to endocrine tumors and their skin manifestations.

We often think of the lentiginoses, phacomatoses and other neurocutaneous syndromes as conditions that affect the skin and also predispose to a variety of tumors. However, we rarely think of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), Carney complex (CNC), Cowden disease (CD), neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF-1) or tuberous sclerosis (TSC) as conditions that are multiple endocrine neoplasias (MEN). Indeed, all of these conditions predispose to a variety of endocrine tumors, in addition to many other neoplasms. On the other hand, the classic MENs, type 1 and 2 (MEN-1 and MEN-2, respectively) are almost never tho

Spectrum of central nervous system abnormalities in neurocutaneous melanocytosis.

AIM: Neurocutaneous melanocytosis is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome defined by the presence of large and/or multiple congenital cutaneous nevi and melanocytic deposits in the central nervous system. We sought to define the spectrum of central nervous system abnormalities in children with neurocutaneous melanocytosis. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed cases of neurocutaneous melanocytosis referred to the pediatric neuro-oncology service at our center from 2003 to 2010. RESULTS: Of 14 patients (11 males, 3 females) identified, eight were living. Median age of survivors was 31 months (range 1

Sciatic nerve tumor and tumor-like lesions - uncommon pathologies.

Sciatic nerve mass-like enlargement caused by peripheral nerve sheath tumors or neurocutaneous syndromes such as neurofibromatosis or schwannomatosis has been widely reported. Other causes of enlargement, such as from perineuroma, fibromatosis, neurolymphoma, amyloidosis, endometriosis, intraneural ganglion cyst, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy are relatively rare. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an excellent non-invasive tool for the evaluation of such lesions. In this article, the authors discuss normal anatomy of the sci

Usefulness of diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tractography in neurological and neurosurgical pediatric diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with fiber tractography (FT) is a recently introduced imaging technique that is unique in providing detailed imaging of white matter (WM) tracts and connectivity between different regions of the brain not easily appreciated with other imaging methods. DISCUSSION: DTI has been used in recent years to investigate several disease conditions involving WM, including brain malformations, cerebral ischemia, multiple sclerosis, neurocutaneous syndromes, and brain tumors. CONCLUSION: In this paper, we focus our attention on the main applications of DTI-FT

Oral sialadenoma papilliferum with kras mutation in a patient with linear nevus sebaceous syndrome.

Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome (LNSS) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome part of the epidermal nevus syndromes group, characterized by the presence of sebaceous nevi and other extracutaneous lesions genetically related to RAS family gene mutations. Sialadenoma papilliferum (SP) is a rare benign intraoral neoplasm which is usually BRAF or HRAS mutated. We report a case of a young female girl diagnosed with a LNSS who developed a SP which had a KRAS mutation. This is the first case of SP with a KRAS mutation in the context of a LNSS.

Manifestations of systemic diseases on thoracic imaging.

A familiarity with the numerous findings in commonly encountered systemic diseases is necessary for the radiologist interpreting any chest study. These systemic diseases include collagen vascular diseases, vasculitides, granulomatous diseases, neoplasms, hematologic and metabolic abnormalities, neurocutaneous syndromes, deposition disease, and miscellaneous conditions such as cystic fibrosis and Goodpasture's syndrome. Although the imaging findings of these and other recognized systemic diseases are often nonspecific and varied, an understanding of their typical manifestations allows the radio

[MRT in neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis].

The relatively rare neurocutaneous syndromes may produce neurological symptoms during childhood. After closure of the fontanelle, the radiological methods of choice are CT and MRT. The value of these two methods is demonstrated by twelve examples (eight neurofibromatoses, four tuberous scleroses). CT is superior to MRT in being able to show calcification; it is therefore the method of choice for tuberous sclerosis. On the other hand, MRT may show foci of neurofibromatosis; these can hardly be seen on CT. In order to show cerebral lesions in these two conditions, T2-weighted sequences are neces

Facial hemangioma with cerebrovascular anomalies and cerebellar hypoplasia.

A 5-year-old female patient with a left facial strawberry nevus, ipsilateral optic atrophy and cerebellar signs was observed. Computed tomography and cerebral angiography confirmed left cerebellar hypoplasia and cerebrovascular abnormalities such as internal carotid arterial stenosis, basilar artery occlusion, and a saccular aneurysm of left carotid siphon, all of which are presumed to develop congenitally. This case may represent a new variety of neurocutaneous syndrome which is different from other syndromes associated with facial hemangioma, such as the Sturge-Weber syndrome and the Wyburn-

Neuroimaging of neurocutaneous diseases.

An in-depth knowledge of the imaging characteristics of the common neurocutaneous diseases (NCD) described in this article will help neurologists understand the screening imaging modalities in these patients. The future of neuroimaging is geared towards developing and refining magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. The detection of tumors in NCD has greatly improved with availability of high-field strength 3T MRI machines. Neuroimaging will remain at the heart and soul of the multidisciplinary care of such complex diagnoses to guide early detection and monitor treatment.
