Biological validation of mathematically derived hypothesis in neuroscience.

Because of the complexity of the central nervous system, it is often difficult to biologically demonstrate the mathematically derived hypothesis in neuroscience studies. Most of the computational studies are terminated at proposing hypothesis. Here, we show an example of biological demonstration of mathematically derived hypothesis, targeting the contribution of the interhemispheric pathway to recovery of hand dexterity after spinal cord injury in macaque monkeys. The studies started from the whole brain functional imaging with low temporal resolution, followed by multichannel electrocorticogr

[Reflections on the relationship between psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience].

Despite their distinct theoretical and methodological frameworks, the two fields - psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience - nevertheless converge on the idea that a large part of psychological functioning eludes consciousness. While psychoanalysis conceives of the unconscious as dynamic, conflict-ridden, and meaningful, neuroscience views it as a set of non-conscious neural processes. Parallels are drawn between cognitive psychology, relational neuroscience, and psychoanalysis.

fNIRS in autism neuroscience: From replication to discovery.

Studying the neural basis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has long been hampered by a mismatch: core social features unfold during interaction, whereas standard neuroimaging commonly relies on isolated, scanner-based environments. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) partly addresses this mismatch. It is portable, more tolerant of moderate movement than fMRI, and compatible with live social interaction, although it remains sensitive to optode motion and systemic physiology and is restricted primarily to superficial cortex. This narrative review examines three contributions of fNIRS

The intersection of neuroscience, socioeconomic status, and preterm birth.

Preterm birth is a leading cause of brain dysmaturation and neurocognitive impairment in childhood. While both dysmaturation and adverse outcomes are often attributed to low gestational age and PTB-associated risk factors such as chorioamnionitis, immune dysregulation, suboptimal nutrition, and common co-morbidities, recent studies suggest socioeconomic inequalities also play an important role. In this review, we summarize current etiological evidence linking socioeconomic status with i) brain injury/dysmaturation defined using magnetic resonance imaging, and ii) cognitive and behavioral outco

Cancer Neuroscience: Establishing a home in Neuro-Oncology.

Although neurons innervate all organs in which solid tumors grow, the role of neurons in cancer biology has long been neglected. Over the past decade, numerous studies have elucidated the critical role of the nervous system in cancer pathophysiology, culminating in the birth of Cancer Neuroscience. The recognition that neurons dictate many aspects of tumor biology not only provides new opportunities for therapeutic targeting of these stromal dependencies but also underscores the strong bi-directional relationships between tumors and the nervous system that result in cancer-associated symptomat

Psychopathy, neuroscience, and critical issues: A legal primer.

Psychopathy occupies a pivotal yet unsettled position at the intersection of neuroscience, business ethics, and criminal jurisprudence. Despite rapid scientific advances, core uncertainties remain. This article examines five issues of immediate legal relevance: (1) the contested neurobiological basis of psychopathy; (2) reproducibility concerns linked to the broader replication crisis in psychological and neuroscientific research; (3) limitations of leading assessment instruments (e.g., PCL-R), and the risks of reifying cut-off scores; (4) accumulating evidence favouring a dimensional understa

A neuroscience perspective on the plasticity of the social and relational brain.

Over the past two decades, the fields of social and contemplative neurosciences have made significant strides. Initial research utilizing fMRI identified neuronal networks involved in empathy, mentalizing, and compassion, as well as complex interactions among these networks. Subsequent studies shifted to testing the plasticity of these social skills via different types of mindfulness- or compassion-based mental training programs, demonstrating brain plasticity, enhanced social capacities and motivation, as well as improved mental health and overall well-being. Next, researchers developed scala

Dynamical properties and mechanisms of metastability: A perspective in neuroscience.

Metastability, characterized by a variability of regimes in time, is a ubiquitous type of neural dynamics. It has been formulated in many different ways in the neuroscience literature, however, which may cause some confusion. In this Perspective, we discuss metastability from the point of view of dynamical systems theory. We extract from the literature a very simple but general definition through the concept of metastable regimes as long-lived but transient epochs of activity with unique dynamical properties. This definition serves as an umbrella term that encompasses formulations from other w

Neuroplasticity and Rhinoplasty: Bridging Neuroscience and Aesthetic Surgery.

Neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize its structure and function, plays a pivotal role in adapting to anatomical changes introduced by surgical interventions such as rhinoplasty. This review explores the interplay between functional and aesthetic outcomes of rhinoplasty and their implications on cognitive and emotional processes. Key findings highlight the involvement of specialized neural circuits, including the fusiform face area, somatosensory cortex, and mirror neuron systems, in adapting to altered facial features. Furthermore, the importance of preoperative expectations, emo

Sustained delirium reduction in an inpatient neuroscience unit.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is described as acute brain dysfunction that often fluctuates throughout the day and is highly prevalent in hospitalized adults. Delirium negatively affects patient outcomes with consequences including decreased cognitive functioning and increased mortality and healthcare costs. Furthermore, neurological patients are at increased risk for developing delirium due to their underlying diagnoses. PURPOSE: The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to evaluate the long-term impact of nursing education and use of trained volunteers to prevent the development of del

Classics in Chemical Neuroscience: Deliriant Antihistaminic Drugs.

Antihistaminic drugs are widely used clinically and have long been primarily known for their use to treat severe allergic conditions caused by histamine release. Antihistaminic drugs also exert central nervous system (CNS) effects, acting as anxiolytics, hypnotics, and neuroleptics. However, these drugs also have multiple serious neuropharmacological side-effects, inducing delirium, hyperarousal, disorganized behavior, and hallucinations. Due to their robust CNS effects, antihistamines are also increasingly abused, with occasional overdoses and life-threatening toxicity. Here, we discuss chemi

Beyond Birth Control: The Neuroscience of Hormonal Contraceptives.

Hormonal contraceptives (HCs) are one of the most highly prescribed classes of drugs in the world used for both contraceptive and noncontraceptive purposes. Despite their prevalent use, the impact of HCs on the brain remains inadequately explored. This review synthesizes recent findings on the neuroscience of HCs, with a focus on human structural neuroimaging as well as translational, nonhuman animal studies investigating the cellular, molecular, and behavioral effects of HCs. Additionally, we consider data linking HCs to mood disorders and dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (

Neuroscience: A bottom-up mechanism for cognitive control?

Cognitive control is often conceived of as occurring top-down, with prefrontal cortical areas exerting control over other parts of the brain. A new study demonstrates what might be considered a 'bottom-up' mechanism for cognitive control, involving the disinhibition of orbitofrontal cortex by subcortical regions.

Cancer neuroscience: State of the field, emerging directions.

The nervous system governs both ontogeny and oncology. Regulating organogenesis during development, maintaining homeostasis, and promoting plasticity throughout life, the nervous system plays parallel roles in the regulation of cancers. Foundational discoveries have elucidated direct paracrine and electrochemical communication between neurons and cancer cells, as well as indirect interactions through neural effects on the immune system and stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment in a wide range of malignancies. Nervous system-cancer interactions can regulate oncogenesis, growth, invasion a

Simulation in Anesthesia for Perioperative Neuroscience: Present and Future.

The brain's sensitivity to fluctuations in physiological parameters demands precise control of anesthesia during neurosurgery, which, combined with the complex nature of neurosurgical procedures and potential for adverse outcomes, makes neuroanesthesia challenging. Neuroanesthesiologists, as perioperative physicians, work closely with neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurointensivists, and neuroradiologists to provide care for patients with complex neurological diseases, often dealing with life-threatening conditions such as traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, cerebral aneurysms, and spinal co

COVID-19 and the perioperative neuroscience - A narrative review.

Among the several medical specialties, anesthesiologists are probably the most affected ones from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic as they are at the frontline. In the present stage of the pandemic, where we are observing community transmission, more people with elective neurologic and neurosurgical problems are likely to be tested positive for this virulent disease. Neuroanesthesiologists play an important role in the perioperative period and in neuroradiology suite. It is imperative to know the best available ways by which health care providers can manage their patients and also n

Reinforcement learning and its connections with neuroscience and psychology.

Reinforcement learning methods have recently been very successful at performing complex sequential tasks like playing Atari games, Go and Poker. These algorithms have outperformed humans in several tasks by learning from scratch, using only scalar rewards obtained through interaction with their environment. While there certainly has been considerable independent innovation to produce such results, many core ideas in reinforcement learning are inspired by phenomena in animal learning, psychology and neuroscience. In this paper, we comprehensively review a large number of findings in both neuros
