The Annals of otology, rhinology, and laryngology1979eng
A patient with a small cell, undifferentiated carcinoma of the larynx is described. The tumor appeared to arise in close association with subglottic minor salivary glands. Ultrastructural study of the tumor cells showed neurosecretory granules similar to those seen in normal Kulchitsky cells and pulmonary oat cell carcinomas. Bronchogenic oat cell carcinoma and small cell undifferentiated carcinoma of minor salivary gland tissue probably originate from the same cell type. The aggressive behavior of this tumor suggests the need for early systemic treatment including combination chemotherpay.

Oxytocin (OXT)-containing neurosecretory cells in the parvocellular divisions of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), which project to the medulla and spinal cord, are involved in various physiological functions, such as sensory modulation and autonomic processes. In the present study, we examined OXT expression in the hypothalamo-spinal pathway, as well as the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system, which includes the magnocellular neurosecretory cells in the PVN and the supraoptic nucleus (SON), after s.c. injection of saline or formalin into the hindpaws of transgenic rats that express the OXT a

This study performed the ultrastructural description of the synganglion of Rhipicephalus sanguineus males and females, aiming to contribute to the understanding of the cellular organization of this organ. The results show that the central nervous system of these individuals consists of a mass of fused nerves, named synganglion, from where nerves emerge towards several parts of the body. It is surrounded by the neural lamella, a uniform and acellular layer, constituted by repeated layers of homogeneous and finely granular material. The perineurium is just below, composed of glial cells, which e

Infectious and allergic diseases represent distinct aspects of immune response that can be experimentally modeled as endotoxic reactions following bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration and anaphylactoid reactions following systemic injection of foreign proteins, respectively. Although it is well established that LPS stimulates the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, such effects of anaphylactoid reactions are completely unknown. To evaluate the impact of anaphylactoid reactions on HPA regulation, secretion of adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) was follo

Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is one of the most common causes of both primary and secondary amenorrhea in women of reproductive age. It is characterized by chronic anovulation and the absence of menses that appear as a result of stressors such as eating disorders, excessive exercise, or psychological distress. FHA is presumed to be a functional disruption in the pulsatile secretion of hypothalamic gonadotropin-releasing hormone, which in turn impairs the release of gonadotropin. Hypoestrogenism is observed due to the absence of ovarian follicle recruitment. Numerous neurotransmitte

The disseminated (or diffuse) endocrine system is composed of many single cells and small groups of cells disseminated in the whole organism, capable of producing biogenic amines and polypeptide hormones. They are also called APUD cells and were first detected in the mucosa of the intestinal tract, where they occur in highest concentration. Carcinoids are tumors of disseminated endocrine cells which sometime retain their hormone-producing capacity. These hormones are key factors in the control of numerous bodily functions; some are transported by way of the bloodstream, while others probably e

Ageing is a progressive biological process causing a reduction in tissue and cellular function due to accumulated molecular damage over time. Cellular senescence is a stable cellular state characterized by irreversible cell-cycle arrest accompanied by distinct molecular, epigenetic, and secretory alterations. Moreover, neuroendocrine signalling and epigenetic regulation have had a great impact on controlling ageing and senescence. As a part of the neuroendocrine system, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) mediate stress responses, circadian re

Previous studies have indicated a complex interplay between the nitric oxide (NO) pain signaling pathways and hormonal signaling pathways in the body. This article delineates the role of nitric oxide signaling in neuropathic and inflammatory pain generation and subsequently discusses how the neuroendocrine system is involved in pain generation. Hormonal systems including the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) generation of cortisol, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, calcitonin, melatonin, and sex hormones could potentially contribute to the generation of nitric oxide involved in the sen

The transition into menopause is a complex process that affects fertility and increases the risk for a number of health problems in aging women that include, but are not limited to osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes mellitus and cognitive dysfunction. Improved nutrition and enhanced access to medical care have increased the average lifespan for women in developed countries, and many will spend more than one-third of their life in a post-menopausal state. Epidemiological studies indicate that a delayed natural menopause confers longevity and decelerates the appearance of much age-related mor

A simple method of manipulating neuronal gene expression would greatly facilitate the design of experiments to increase our understanding of and ability to treat diseases of the CNS. However, until recently most transfection methods could only deliver DNA into dividing cells and it was only possible to manipulate neuronal gene expression through the production of transgenic animals. The development of powerful new viral-based gene transfer systems has generated a great deal of research interest in the field of therapeutic gene transfer during the last decade. One of the most powerful and versa

Declining fertility due to ovarian dysfunction is a critical concern for population sustainability. Acupuncture shows potential for ovarian functional restoration, primarily mediated through its neuromodulatory effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. Accumulating evidence from clinical and animal studies suggests that acupuncture modulates ovarian function through multiple neuroendocrine pathways. Specifically, acupuncture regulates hypothalamic activity by influencing the release of reproduction-associated neuropeptides (e.g., kisspeptin, neuropeptide Y, and gonadotropin-rel

The hypothalamic-pituitary axis is central to the functioning of the neuroendocrine system and essential for regulating physiological and behavioral homeostasis and coordinating fundamental body functions. The expanding line of evidence shows the indispensable role of the microRNA pathway in regulating the gene expression profile in the developing and adult hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Experiments provoking a depletion of miRNA maturation in the context of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis brought into focus a prominent involvement of miRNAs in neuroendocrine functions. There are also a few

The brain influences liver metabolism through many neuroendocrine and autonomic mechanisms that have evolved to protect the organism against starvation and hypoglycemia. Unfortunately, this effective way of preventing death has become dysregulated in modern obesogenic environments, although the pathophysiological mechanisms behind metabolic dyshomeostasis are still unclear. In this Mini-Review, we provide our thoughts regarding obesity and type 2 diabetes as diseases of the autonomic nervous system. We discuss the pathophysiological mechanisms that alter the autonomic brain-liver communication

Prolactin (PRL) is a peptide hormone produced by the pituitary gland and diverse extrapituitary sites, which triggers activation of various signaling pathways after binding to its receptor (PRLr) resulting in the activation of specific genes associated with the pleiotropic activities of PLR. To date, various PRLr isoforms have been described, generated by post-transcriptional or post-translational processes. PRL has been associated with the modulation of a variety of actions in the immune response and inflammatory processes in several physiologic and pathologic conditions. However, PRL can hav

For long, the immune system has been thought of as an effector mechanism reacting to antigenic challenge with defensive responses designed to eliminate 'foreign' material and return to a standby or surveillance mode. However, the recent concept now supported by substantial evidence suggests that immunity is not effector biased but is also a sensory organ and forms part of an integrated homeostatic network. The bidirectional information flow between the neuroendocrine and immune systems functions to maintain and protect the internal homeostasis of the organism. The paradox of this interwined fu

The ultrastructural organization of actin filaments was studied in the neurohypophysial system of the rat after heavy meromyosin (HMM) labeling. This structural pattern is characterized by (1) a straight arrangement of the filaments parallel to the axonal axis in the proximal nondilated parts of axons, (2) a central location within axonal dilatations, and (3) a higher concentration within axonal endings where the filaments form a complex three-dimensional network. The relationships of the filaments to other axonal structures and organelles was further studied by use of electron microscopic ste

Carbon dioxide (CO(2)) interacts in complex ways with the brain and the endocrine and immune systems. Arterial CO(2) may be elevated or decreased following cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury or stroke. The aim of the present review is to delineate potential changes in the neuroimmunoendocrine system following cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and to provide evidence for the modulatory role of carbon dioxide in this setting. It appears that lesions of the right and left cerebral hemispheres are associated with different patterns of immune activation and cytokine release. Changes in arteria

A growing body of evidence indiates that carbon monoxide (CO) acts as a gas neurotransmitter within the central nervous system. Although CO has been shown to affect neurohypophyseal hormone release in response to osmotic stimuli, the precise sources, targets and mechanisms underlying the actions of CO within the magnocellular neurosecretory system remain largely unknown. In the present study, we combined immunohistochemistry and patch-clamp electrophysiology to study the cellular distribution of the CO-synthase enzyme heme oxygenase type 1 (HO-1), as well as the actions of CO on oxytocin (OT)

Orexins are hypothalamic neuropeptides that play an essential role in managing the sleep-wake cycle, food intake, and energy balance. There are two forms of orexins, namely orexin A (OXA) and orexin B (OXB). Orexins exert their effects through two different G-protein-coupled receptors (OX1R and OX2R). Apart from the hypothalamus, expressions of orexins and their receptors are also reported in peripheral organs including the testis, prostate, epididymis, seminal vesicle, and penis. Several studies have explored the mechanisms of action of orexin in the male gonad. This review article summarizes

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in neuroscience tools for single-cell molecular profiling of brain neurons have revealed an enormous spectrum of neuronal subpopulations within the neuroendocrine hypothalamus, highlighting the remarkable molecular and cellular heterogeneity of this brain area.
RATIONALE: Neuronal diversity in the hypothalamus reflects the high functional plasticity of this brain area, where multiple neuronal populations flexibly integrate a variety of physiological outputs, including energy balance, stress and fertility, through crosstalk mechanisms with peripheral hormones.
