Pigmentary disorders in India.

This article addresses pigmentary disorders relevant to India. Many of these disorders are easily spotted because of the Indians' darker complexion. The authors examine hypopigmentary and hyperpigmentary disorders, defining the main characteristics of each and their relevance to the people of India, including social as well as physical ramifications. The authors propose the treatments available to Indians exhibiting these skin disorders.

Neurocutaneous melanosis: a case of primary intracranial melanoma with metastasis.

Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare disorder characterized by the presence of large or multiple congenital melanocytic naevi and benign or malignant pigment cell tumours of the leptomeninges. Distant metastasis is unusual in primary leptomeningeal/intracranial melanomas. We present the case history of an adult male who had multiple primary intracranial melanomas associated with neurocutaneous melanosis (naevus of Ota) in the ophthalmic division of the left trigeminal nerve. Excision of the intracranial tumours was carried out in two stages, but the patient died 2 days after the second operation

Primary leptomeningeal melanocytic neoplasms: A clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular study of 12 cases.

This study investigated the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of primary leptomeningeal melanocytic neoplasms (LMNs). Twelve LMN cases were retrospectively reviewed. We performed Fluorescence in-situ hybridization (including a 4-probe FISH assay with CDKN2A and MYC assay) and Next-Generation sequencing analyses on available cases. Histologically, 2 tumours were classified as melanocytomas (MC), 2 as intermediate-grade melanocytomas (IMC), and 8 as leptomeningeal melanomas (LMM). Two rare cases of LMM were associated with large plaque-like blue nevus. One MC case

Glaucoma in oculodermal melanocytosis.

Oculodermal melanocytosis (ODM) is a developmental disorder of the embryonic neural crest involving virtually all of the structures of the eye derived from this tissue. The authors examined 194 previously unreported Thai patients with ODM. Elevated intraocular pressures (IOPs) developed in the ipsilateral eye of 15 patients at initial examination and in 5 others during follow-up, for a total of 10.3% of the patients. Three patients had congenital or late congenital glaucoma, 14 had ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma, and 3 had acute angle-closure glaucoma. Five of the patients with ope

Theoretical Analysis of Large-Spot Picosecond Laser Treatment for Pigmented Lesions in Asian Skin.

OBJECTIVES: To theoretically evaluate the efficacy and safety of large-spot (i.e., > 4 mm) picosecond laser treatment for pigmented lesions in Asian skin using a melanosome disruption threshold fluence (MDTF) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The MDTF model was applied to calculate the required fluence for melanosome disruption with 532, 730, 755, 785, and 1064 nm picosecond lasers. To assess potential complication risks, energy deposition in surrounding tissues was simulated. Additionally, a clinical case series was conducted using a 1064 nm picosecond laser with a large spot size to evaluate it

Combination therapy in skin of color including injectables, laser, and light devices.

With the rapid increase in patients seeking cosmetic treatments, the variation in responses of lightly pigmented skin versus darkly pigmented skin has become increasingly apparent. Despite extensive treatment options in patients with skin of color, there is a paucity of well-designed studies performed on this patient population. The lack of research is concerning, as it is well documented that patients with darker skin types are at an increased risk of adverse events when treated with many of the available modalities used in cosmetic procedures. Fortunately, by combining a variety of treatment

Review of the literature: Treatment of dyspigmentation with fractionated resurfacing.

BACKGROUND: Traditional ablative laser resurfacing is associated with adverse side effects, including prolonged erythema, edema, burning, milia, acne, crusting, and hypo- and hyperpigmentation. Fractional photothermolysis (FP) has been introduced to overcome the disadvantages of traditional ablative and nonablative resurfacing. With FP, the microscopic, pixilated pattern of wounding in the dermis results in significant skin pigmentary and textural improvements without the adverse effects of prolonged wound healing and risks of dyspigmentation associated with traditional ablative resurfacing. Q-switched ruby laser treatment of tattoos and benign pigmented skin lesions: a critical review.

The Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, 25-40 nsec) is an effective and safe therapeutic device for the treatment of tattoos and well-defined, benign, pigmented epidermal and dermal lesions. Because of its selective mode of action, dermal pigments of natural and artificial origin are destroyed photothermically and removed without scar. This method is exceptionally suited for the elimination of lay and professional tattoos, traumatic tattoos, and permanent makeup. Other frequent indications include benign pigmented lesions such as lentigines, freckles, café-au-lait spots, seborrheic keratosis, and B

The color of skin: gray diseases of the skin, nails, and mucosa.

Gray diseases are a group of skin disorders characterized mainly by gray discoloration with or without involving the mucous membranes and nails. These diseases may be hereditary or acquired. Some of the better-known hereditary entities are dermal melanocytosis, incontinentia pigmenti, hypomelanosis of Ito, hemochromatosis, ochronosis, and silvery hair syndrome. Acquired diseases with gray coloring include late-stage organ failure, lichen planus pigmentosus, erythema dyschromicum perstans, and drug reactions. The discoloration is due to either increased epidermal and or dermal melanin or dermal

Characteristics and management of Asian skin.

Color differences in skin are due to the amount and distribution of epidermal melanin. The number of melanocytes is almost the same in all skin types, but higher phototypes exhibit more melanocytes, which produce more melanin and melanosomes that are individually distributed throughout the keratinocyte layers. This characteristic ensures a natural, significant photoprotection in darker skins. Asians are a population with various skin phototypes, ranging from type III to IV Fitzpatrick's classification in Chinese and Japanese to type IV and V in Indian and Pakistani people. Asian skin tends to
