Measles in Papua New Guinea: an age-specific serological survey.

We aimed to determine the proportion of the population in Madang (Papua New Guinea) immune to measles infection by age groups, with respect to immunization status and study location, using dried blood sampling technology. We performed a prospective cross-sectional sero-survey. Population immunity against measles was sub-optimal (77%) and reported measles vaccine coverage in children <10 years of age was low (41%). The urban population was more susceptible to measles infection, compared with the rural population (66% vs 79% immune, aOR=0.6, p=0.05). Sero-conversion and long term protection rate

Mouse and guinea pig models for testing new tuberculosis vaccines.

Animal models of pulmonary tuberculosis in the mouse and guinea pig contain to provide new information about the host response in the lungs, changes in immunopathology, and the protective effect of new vaccine candidates. These include Mtb72F, a polyprotein vaccine that gives excellent protection and also boosts and prolongs the protective effect of the BCG vaccine.

Adoption and hospital admission in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

We report a study of adopted children admitted to the children's wards of Port Moresby General Hospital, Papua New Guinea over a 5-month period in 2000. The proportion of hospitalized children known to be adopted was almost three times that in the children's outpatients department. Gastroenteritis and neonatal sepsis were more common causes of admission in adopted children than in the general paediatric hospital population. Admitted adopted children were lighter and shorter than the controls with no difference in weight-for-height, suggesting that stunting is the predominant nutritional proble

Human immune responses to lymphatic filariasis in Papua New Guinea.

The following review highlights our current knowledge about the host immune response to lymphatic filariasis. Our understanding of how the host immune response influences the risk of developing disease has changed dramatically over the past decade. Previously the spectrum of disease associated with lymphatic filariasis was largely attributed to the nature of the host immune response. Now we appreciate that the duration and intensity of infection and possibly the direct influence of parasite-derived molecules also determine the risk of disease. The review highlights recent studies examining the

Orbital malignancy in Papua New Guinea: a 21 year review.

BACKGROUND: Information about orbital malignancies in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is limited to reports published 20 years ago. The present retrospective study was performed to establish the pattern of malignant orbital lesions occurring in PNG and to see whether the pattern is any different from that reported in the earlier series and in other countries. Papua New Guinea is special in that it has a large and relatively homogenous population unaffected,to a large extent, by contact with the'outside world'. METHODS: The records of 176 proven cases of orbital malignancy treated between 1975 and 1996

Parasitic infection of man on Kar Kar Island, New Guinea.

The prevalence of protozoan and helminth parasites of the intestinal tract in a Papua New Guinea island with a population of 16,800 was assessed by surveys of a series of randomly selected villages. There were significant differences in the severity of infection with these parasites between the two linguistic groups inhabiting the eastern and western halves of the island. Blood examinations for malaria and microfilariae also differed. It is thought that these differences reflect obscure microenvironmental factors in what would appear to be an epidemiologically homogeneous population.

The new problem of typhoid fever in Papua New Guinea: how do we deal with it?

This paper reviews some of the issues relating to typhoid fever in Papua New Guinea. Before the mid-1980s only sporadic cases of typhoid were reported but it is now one of the greatest public health problems in the highlands and some urban areas. In one study near Goroka an annual incidence rate of 1208 per 100,000 people was found, with settlers from other areas at greater risk than the local landowners. Problems relating to management included differentiation from other diseases, the limitations of the Widal test and poor compliance among outpatients. In Papua New Guinea it appears that tran

New species of Parathelandros (Nematoda: Pharyngodonidae) in Nyctimystes trachydermis (Anura: Hylidae) from Papua New Guinea.

Parathelandros allisoni n. sp. from the intestines of the frog Nyctimystes trachydermis (Hylidae) from Central Province, Papua New Guinea is described and illustrated. It is the 12th species assigned to the genus and the ninth species of Parathelandros to be reported from the Australo-Papuan region. Parathelandros allisoni n. sp. is most similar to Parathelandros australiensis in that the vulva occurs near the esophageal bulb, but differs in that males lack the spherical postcloacal lobe characteristic of P. australiensis. The description of P. andersoni is amended to include operculate eggs a

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Papua New Guinea. The description of 13 new variants.

A total of 362 males from various regions of Papua New Guinea were screened for red cell glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity. Twenty-six G6PD deficient individuals were identified. Biochemical characterization of G6PD purified from these subjects has revealed 13 new variants and several copies of previously described forms of G6PD. This study illustrates the extreme heterogeneity of G6PD deficiency among the people of Papua New Guinea.

Prevalence of Hidradenitis Suppurativa in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic and debilitating inflammatory skin disease, which mostly occurs in the skinfolds. The global prevalence of HS is currently unknown. Depending on the type of research and studied population, the reported prevalence varies between 0.03% and 4.1%. It is important to investigate the prevalence of HS worldwide using the same study design, in order to recognize, diagnose, and treat patients at an earlier stage. Consequently, a worldwide initiative, the Global Hidradenitis Suppurativa Atlas (GHiSA) has developed a study design to

Cholera in Papua New Guinea: observations to date and future considerations.

Cholera is a severe diarrhoeal illness caused by infection with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. From July 2009 to late 2011 Papua New Guinea (PNG) experienced thefirst outbreak of cholera ever reported in this country. During this time > 15,000 cases of cholera were reported, resulting in approximately 500 deaths. The origin of this outbreak is unknown, but considering the remote location of the initial outbreak an infected international traveller is unlikely to be the source. In this paper we review the characteristics of the PNG cholera outbreak and discuss the ongoing threat of cholera to th

Challenges in recognition and diagnosis of yaws in children in Papua New Guinea.

A global resurgence of yaws in developing countries highlights the need for reliable diagnostic criteria for this neglected infection. We conducted a clinical and serologic survey of 233 children less than 15 years of age who had clinically suspected yaws. A total of 138 (59%) cases were confirmed serologically, and 10 of 12 primary stage cases showed positive results for Treponema pallidum by a polymerase chain reaction assay that has not yet been validated for identification of yaws. A high proportion of cases (46%) were in the secondary stage; 92% of them had osteoarticular involvement, and

Yaws in the periurban settlements of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Yaws is a re-emerging disease in Papua New Guinea. A resurgence of yaws is documented in the periurban settlements around Port Moresby. A total of 494 cases were identified from April 2000 to September 2001. The age distribution ranged from 2 years to adult (median 9 years). Presenting symptoms were adequately recorded in 286 cases (58%). Of these, 42% presented with raised painless sores, 47% with bone/joint symptoms only and 11% with both sores and bone/joint symptoms. Children in communities with a suspected high prevalence were surveyed and examined for presence of primary yaws sores. 33 o

Issues in the management of sexually transmitted diseases in Papua New Guinea.

This paper outlines three important issues in the clinical management of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Papua New Guinea which have, until now, gone unrecognized or been neglected. Suggestions for possible solutions are made. The high prevalence of both chlamydial and trichomonal infections in women cannot be ignored. Both of these infections have been shown to increase the transmission of HIV. The current algorithm for the treatment of vaginal discharges does not include treatment for trichomonal infection in the first instance, yet trichomoniasis has been shown to be the most common
