Development and implementation of a risk assessment and management program for enzootic bovine leukosis in Atlantic Canada.

Over the past 30 yr, the prevalence of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection has increased in North America, including Atlantic Canada, at both the herd and individual cow levels. This has occurred despite increased awareness of the disease and its deleterious effects and despite implementation of management practices aimed at reducing disease transmission. Our objectives were to identify risk factors associated with the within-herd prevalence of BLV-infected cows by using a risk assessment and management program workbook, as well as to determine the current level of BLV prevalence in the Atla

The distribution and trends of persistent organic pollutants and mercury in marine mammals from Canada's Eastern Arctic.

Arctic contaminant research in the marine environment has focused on organohalogen compounds and mercury mainly because they are bioaccumulative, persistent and toxic. This review summarizes and discusses the patterns and trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and mercury in ringed seals (Pusa hispida) and polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in the Eastern Canadian Arctic relative to the rest of the Canadian Arctic. The review provides explanations for these trends and looks at the implications of climate-related changes on contaminants in these marine mammals in a region that has been revie

Seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii in selected populations of domestic ruminants in Newfoundland.

The seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii among cattle, sheep, and goats in Newfoundland was determined by microimmunofluorescence. Seropositivity to phase II antigen increased in sheep from 3.1% in 1997 to 23.5% in 1999-2000 (P < 0.001). Cows (24%) had antibodies to phase I antigen; goats (15.6%) had antibodies to phase II antigen. Seroprevalence of C. burnetii is increasing among sheep.

Cutaneous Melanoma Mortality-to-Incidence Ratio and Its Association With Socioeconomic and Healthcare Factors in Canada: A National Ecological Study.

INTRODUCTION: The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) can be used to approximate healthcare inequities and is helpful to understand/compare cancer survival between geographic regions/jurisdictions. We investigated cutaneous melanoma (CM) outcomes through MIR analysis in Canadian jurisdictions and census divisions (CDs) between 1992 and 2016. METHODS: Data were obtained from the national databases from 1992 to 2016 for all Canadian jurisdictions, except Quebec. Age-standardized overall and median MIRs were calculated per province per year, while crude MIRs were calculated for CDs. Generalized l

Women's decisions about maternal serum screening testing: a qualitative study exploring what they learn and the role prenatal care providers play.

BACKGROUND: Maternal serum screening (MSS) is a blood screening test that detects fetuses with an increased risk for open neural tube defects, Down syndrome and Trisomy 18. Although most physicians offer MSS to their patients, discussions about the test are brief, usually lasting less than 5min. RESEARCH PROBLEM: The short duration of these discussions raises questions about the quality of information women receive and whether their screening decisions were well informed. This article describes what women learn about MSS and from which sources, and the role of their physician in their decisio

Association of RBP4 gene variants and serum HDL cholesterol levels in the Newfoundland population.

Retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a novel adipokine that likely contributes to systemic insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. The role of genetic variations in RBP4 on phenotypes of glucose and lipid metabolism is not clear in humans. The purpose of this study was to examine five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the RBP4 gene to determine their relationship with markers of insulin resistance and serum lipids in the CODING Study. The CODING Study consists of 1,836 subjects recruited from the genetically homogeneous population of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Canada. Serum glucose, i

Determinants of non-vaccination against seasonal influenza during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the determinants of influenza non-vaccination during pregnancy in Canada. METHODS: Biological mothers of children born between December 2018 and March 2019 were surveyed about vaccinations they had received during pregnancy, reasons for non-vaccination, obstetrical history, and demographics. Simple and multiple logistic regression models were used to measure associations between various sociodemographic factors as well as obstetrical history, and non-vaccination against influenza. We analyzed data from 2361 mothers. RESULTS: Factors asso

Restricted access and advanced disease in post-pandemic testicular cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Urologists observed reduced cancer consultations and surgeries during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, raising concern about treatment delays. Testicular cancer serves as a particularly sensitive marker of this phenomenon, as the clinical stage of testicular cancer at presentation is predictive of cancer-specific survival. We aimed to investigate whether COVID-related restrictions to primary care access resulted in increased incidence of metastatic germ cell testis cancer. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on all cases of testicular cancer managed surgically at our cen

C282Y/H63D Compound Heterozygosity Is a Low Penetrance Genotype for Iron Overload-related Disease.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) occurs due to mutations in the HFE gene. While the C282Y mutation is the most common genotype reported in HH, other genotypes are found less frequently, indicating variable degrees of penetrance. We studied the penetrance of the C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote genotype in developing clinically significant iron overload. METHODS: We have completed a retrospective analysis on every individual within Newfoundland & Labrador who were diagnosed as C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote between 1996 and 2009 through a molecular genetics study. We collected dat

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of an intensive and abbreviated individualized smoking cessation program delivered by pharmacists: A pragmatic, mixed-method, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in Canada. Smoking cessation programs (SCPs) that are effective, cost-effective and widely available are needed to help smokers quit. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to provide such services. This study compares the abstinence rates between 2 pharmacist-led SCPs and the cost-effectiveness between these and a comparator group. The study was conducted in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. METHODS: This pragmatic, mixed-method trial randomized smokers to either an existing intensive SCP or a new abbreviat
