Light driven Aspergillus niger-ZnS nanobiohybrids for degradation of methyl orange.

Inorganic-microbial hybrid systems have potential to be sustainable, efficient and versatile chemical synthesis platforms by integrating the light-harvesting properties of semiconductors with microbial cells. Here, we demonstrate light-driven photocatalytic semiconducting Aspergillus niger cells-ZnS nanoparticles for enhanced removal of the dye methyl orange. Chemically synthesized ZnS nanoparticles exhibited a zinc blende pattern in X-ray diffraction, had a dimension of 20-90 nm with a band gap (Ebg) of 3.4 eV at 1.83 × 1018 photons/second. Biologically synthesized ZnS nanoparticles of 40-90

Genetic modification of the ant Lasius niger using CRISPR-Cas9 technology.

CRISPR-Cas9 has become one of the most prominent gene editing tools available and it has been utilized in various organisms from bacteria to fungi, plants, and animals. In this study, we developed a CRISPR-Cas9 protocol for the black garden ant Lasius niger, a common and easily available study species for lab and field experiments. To create indel mutations using CRISPR-Cas9 in L. niger, we targeted three different locations in a well-studied eye pigmentation gene cinnabar, generating several mutations that disrupt the ommochrome biosynthesis pathway and result in the lack of the pigment and t

Antimicrobial Activity of Microorganisms Isolated from Ant Nests of Lasius niger.

In this study, the microbial communities of two nests of black garden ants (Lasius niger) in the hollows of stem branches of old apple trees were found to have similar species compositions: each community contained representatives of three species from the Bacillaceae family and one species of actinomycetes from the genus Streptomyces. In total, four types of bacilli and two actinomycetes were isolated. Actinomycetes were identified as Streptomyces antibioticus-like and Streptomyces sp. None of the bacilli had antibiotic activity, whereas both streptomycetes produced antibiotics that inhibited

Leptospirosis in fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) of Larimer County, Colorado, USA.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Leptospira interrogans. The organism is typically maintained within a geographic region by colonizing renal tubules of carrier animals and shed into the environment in urine. We assessed whether L. interrogans was present in fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) in Larimer County, Colorado, USA, and whether it is associated with disease. Twenty-two squirrels were trapped from 29 November 2011 to 15 December 2011 for use in an unrelated study. The squirrels were individually housed for 33-65 days and euthanized; no clinical disease was observe

Maintaining high vitamin A supplementation coverage in children: lessons from Niger.

In 1997, the reduction of child mortality became a policy priority for the Government of Niger because Niger's child mortality rate was the highest in the world. The Ministry of Public Health, Helen Keller International (HKI), and UNICEF spearheaded a coalition-building process linking vitamin A deficiency (VAD) control to national child survival goals. An evidence-based advocacy strategy was developed around the child survival benefits of adequate and sustained VAD control with one unambiguous message: "VAD control can avert over 25,000 child deaths per year." As a result, in 1997 Niger becam

Calcium oxalate crystal deposition in necrotizing otomycosis caused by Aspergillus niger.

Numerous calcium oxalate crystals were present within fruiting heads of Aspergillus niger and among necrotic debris in a case of bilateral invasive otomycosis occurring in a diabetic female with end stage renal disease. This is the first report of in vivo calcium oxalate crystal deposition associated with Aspergillus niger at this anatomic site. The presence of localized oxalate crystals within necrotic tissue from the external auditory canal is presumptive of otomycosis caused by Aspergillus niger, and may serve as a diagnostic clue to the etiologic agent before histologic demonstration of hy

Aspergillus niger, an Unusual Case With Fatal Massive Hemoptysis: A Case Report.

Aspergillus Niger is considered a low-virulence fungus. Primary and secondary immunocompromise represent the principal risk factors for developing this disease. There are only a few cases of invasive infection that have been documented, and only a few fatal cases of secondary invasive pulmonary aspergillosis as a cavitation by this agent have been published. We present the case of a 45-year-old man with immunocompromise who developed massive hemoptysis, which, despite treatment, led to his death. Pathological findings documented invasive pulmonary aspergillosis due to A. Niger and a co-infecti

Burden of Malaria in Adults in Sahelian Niger: A Retrospective Study (2019-2021).

In the Sahel, malaria transmission is highly dependent on rainfall, and control efforts are conducted during the rainy season. However, because of climate changes, the objectives of this study were to better define the period of transmission in the different ecoclimatic regions and the burden of the disease in young adults, which is poorly investigated. The data from districts in the different ecological zones of Niger were compared. During this study, 26% of all consultations were malaria related, of which 59% were malaria confirmed. This represented 12,000 to 19,000 cases and 12.9 to 25.6 de

Burden of malaria in young adults in Niger: A prospective study in a military setting.

In Niger, malaria remains a major public health issue and cause of economic loss, but its impact on young adults remains poorly documented. Although this population is central to the country's development, it is rarely studied. Our study aims to fill this gap by assessing the burden of malaria in three cohorts of military recruits monitored in different training centers in Niger, a population representative of urban youth. A prospective cohort study was conducted from September to December 2023 in three military health centers. Participants (aged 17-55) had free access to care. All consultatio

Thriving in salty environments: Aspergillus niger's halotolerance and BTEX biodegradation potential.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) can be found in marine and estuarine waters due to accidental spills of oil and derivatives, as well as in production water and effluents discharged from petrochemical plants. Addressing the bioremediation of these compounds in saline environments and effluents with elevated salinity levels is imperative. In this study, the halotolerance of Aspergillus niger was assessed by subjecting it to a stepwise increase in salinity, achieved through progressive addition of NaCl from 2 to 30‰ (v/v). The fungal strain exhibited optimal growth support up to

First Detection of the West Nile Virus Koutango Lineage in Sandflies in Niger.

West Nile virus (WNV), belonging to the Flaviviridae family, causes a mosquito-borne disease and shows great genetic diversity, with at least eight different lineages. The Koutango lineage of WNV (WN-KOUTV), mostly associated with ticks and rodents in the wild, is exclusively present in Africa and shows evidence of infection in humans and high virulence in mice. In 2016, in a context of Rift Valley fever (RVF) outbreak in Niger, mosquitoes, biting midges and sandflies were collected for arbovirus isolation using cell culture, immunofluorescence and RT-PCR assays. Whole genome sequencing and in

Rutinosidase from Aspergillus niger: crystal structure and insight into the enzymatic activity.

Rutinosidases (α-l-rhamnosyl-β-d-glucosidases) catalyze the cleavage of the glycosidic bond between the aglycone and the disaccharide rutinose (α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-d-glucopyranose) of specific flavonoid glycosides such as rutin (quercetin 3-O-rutinoside). Microbial rutinosidases are part of the rutin catabolic pathway, enabling the microorganism to utilize rutin and related plant phenolic glycosides. Here, we report the first three-dimensional structure of a rutinosidase determined at 1.27-Å resolution. The rutinosidase from Aspergillus niger K2 (AnRut), a member of glycoside hydrolase

Analysis of a meningococcal meningitis outbreak in Niger - potential effectiveness of reactive prophylaxis.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal epidemics of bacterial meningitis in the African Meningitis Belt carry a high burden of disease and mortality. Reactive mass vaccination is used as a control measure during epidemics, but the time taken to gain immunity from the vaccine reduces the flexibility and effectiveness of these campaigns. Targeted reactive antibiotic prophylaxis could be used to supplement reactive mass vaccination and further reduce the incidence of meningitis, and the potential effectiveness and efficiency of these strategies should be explored. METHODS AND FINDINGS: Data from an outbreak of me

Soil dust aerosols and wind as predictors of seasonal meningitis incidence in Niger.

BACKGROUND: Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis are concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa during the dry season, a period when the region is affected by the Harmattan, a dry and dusty northeasterly trade wind blowing from the Sahara into the Gulf of Guinea. OBJECTIVES: We examined the potential of climate-based statistical forecasting models to predict seasonal incidence of meningitis in Niger at both the national and district levels. DATA AND METHODS: We used time series of meningitis incidence from 1986 through 2006 for 38 districts in Niger. We tested models based on data that would be rea
