The impact of second-hand smoke on nitrogen oxides concentrations in a small interior.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx), especially nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are among the most hazardous forms of air pollution. Tobacco smoke is a main indoor source of NOx, but little information is available about their concentrations in second-hand smoke (SHS), particularly in small indoors. This study presents data of NOx and its main components nitric oxide (NO) and NO2 in SHS emitted by ten different cigarette brands measured in a closed test chamber with a volume of 2.88 m3, similar to the volume of vehicle cabins. The results show substantial increases in NOx concentrations when smoking only one cigare

Effects of sulfation on hematite for selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia.

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is a promising candidate for NH3 selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) of NOx due to its good sulfur resistance. However, the activity of pure α-Fe2O3 is very low. In this work, α-Fe2O3 obtained excellent N2 selectivity and medium-high temperature activity via a simple surface sulfation method. The α-Fe2O3-350 (sulfated at 350 °C) sample showed an NO conversion rate of ~ 100% in the range of 275-350 °C and exhibited excellent H2O and SO2 resistance ability at 300 °C. Furthermore, pure α-Fe2O3 was used as a model catalyst to fully uncover the effect of sulfation on FeOx-bas

Aluminum Doped Titania as a Support of Copper Catalysts for SCR of Nitrogen Oxides.

Aluminum doped titania samples were synthesized as supports of copper oxide catalysts for NO reduction with ammonia. Samples were prepared by the sol-gel method with various ratios of aluminum to titanium. Their thermal stability was examined by TG/DSC methods which revealed that precursors were decomposed at 450 °C. The XRD measurements showed that aluminum caused the diminishing of titania crystallites and was built into the anatase structure or formed an amorphous phase. The admixture of aluminum in titania resulted in a significant increase in specific surface area of mesoporous supports a

Numerical simulation of low nitrogen oxides emissions through cement precalciner structure and parameter optimization.

To reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in the combustion process, the structure and parameters of a 4500 t d-1 precalciner were optimized. The precalciner model was established using ANSYS FLUENT software (version 14.5). The effects of raw material angle, tertiary air velocity, and tertiary air temperature on NO concentration were studied. A Box-Behnken design (BBD) with three factors was employed to establish a two-order response model based on response surface methodology. The results showed that the simulated total NO concentration at outlet was 526 ppm. Compared to the monitoring data o

Quantification of nitrogen oxides emissions from build-up of pollution over Paris with TROPOMI.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a regulated air pollutant that is of particular concern in many cities, where concentrations are high. Emissions of nitrogen oxides to the atmosphere lead to the formation of ozone and particulate matter, with adverse impacts on human health and ecosystems. The effects of emissions are often assessed through modeling based on inventories relying on indirect information that is often outdated or incomplete. Here we show that NO2 measurements from the new, high-resolution TROPOMI satellite sensor can directly determine the strength and distribution of emissions from Par

Modeling electron competition among nitrogen oxides reduction and N2 O accumulation in hydrogenotrophic denitrification.

Hydrogenotrophic denitrification is a novel and sustainable process for nitrogen removal, which utilizes hydrogen as electron donor, and carbon dioxide as carbon source. Recent studies have shown that nitrous oxide (N2 O), a highly undesirable intermediate and potent greenhouse gas, can accumulate during this process. In this work, a new mathematical model is developed to describe nitrogen oxides dynamics, especially N2 O, during hydrogenotrophic denitrification for the first time. The model describes electron competition among the four steps of hydrogenotrophic denitrification through decoupl

Nitrogen oxides as dopants for the detection of aromatic compounds with ion mobility spectrometry.

Limits of detection (LODs) in ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) strictly depend on ionization of the analyte. Especially challenging is ionization of compounds with relatively low proton affinity (PA) such as aromatic compounds. To change the course of ion-molecule reactions and enhance the performance of the IMS spectrometer, substances called dopants are introduced into the carrier gas. In this work, we present the results of studies of detection using nitrogen oxides (NOx) dopants. Three aromatic compounds, benzene, toluene, toluene diisocyanate and, for comparison, two compounds with high PA

Land use regression modelling estimating nitrogen oxides exposure in industrial south Durban, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The South Durban (SD) area of Durban, South Africa, has a history of air pollution issues due to the juxtaposition of low-income communities with industrial areas. This study used measurements of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to develop a land use regression (LUR) model to explain the spatial variation of air pollution concentrations in this area. METHODS: Ambient NOx was measured over two two-week sampling periods at 32 sites using Ogawa badges. Following the ESCAPE approach, an annual adjusted average was calculated for these results and regressed against pre-selected geographic pred

Influence of environmental factors on removal of oxides of nitrogen by a photocatalytic coating.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from combustion processes have elevated concentrations in large urban areas. They cause a range of adverse health effects, acid rain, and are precursors to formation of other atmospheric pollutants, such as ozone, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and inorganic aerosols. Photocatalytic materials containing a semi-conductor that can be activated by sunlight, such as titanium dioxide, have been studied for their ability to remove NOx. The study presented herein aims to elucidate the environmental parameters that most influence the NOx removal efficiency of photocatalytic coatin

Nitrogen oxides emissions from thermal power plants in china: current status and future predictions.

Increasing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) over the Chinese mainland have been of great concern due to their adverse impacts on regional air quality and public health. To explore and obtain the temporal and spatial characteristics of NOx emissions from thermal power plants in China, a unit-based method is developed. The method assesses NOx emissions based on detailed information on unit capacity, boiler and burner patterns, feed fuel types, emission control technologies, and geographical locations. The national total NOx emissions in 2010 are estimated at 7801.6 kt, of which 5495.8 kt is re

Parahalogenated phenols accelerate the photochemical release of nitrogen oxides from frozen solutions containing nitrate.

The photolysis of nitrate anion (NO(3)(-)) contained in surface ice and snow can be a regionally significant source of gas-phase nitrogen oxides and affect the composition of the planetary boundary layer. In this study, the photochemical release of nitrogen oxides from frozen solutions containing NO(3)(-) in the presence of organic compounds was investigated. Gas-phase nitrogen oxides were quantified primarily by NO-O(3) chemiluminescence detection of NO and NO(y) (=NO + NO(2) + HONO + HNO(3) + ∑PAN + ∑AN ...) and cavity ring-down spectroscopy of NO(2) and total alkyl nitrates (∑AN). The photo

Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emissions from U.S. pulp and paper mills, 1980-2005.

Comprehensive surveys conducted at 5-yr intervals were used to estimate sulfur dioxide (SO,) and nitrogen oxides (NO.) emissions from U.S. pulp and paper mills for 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005. Over the 25-yr period, paper production increased by 50%, whereas total SO, emissions declined by 60% to 340,000 short tons (t) and total NO, emissions decreased approximately 15% to 230,000 t. The downward emission trends resulted from a combination of factors, including reductions in oil and coal use, steadily declining fuel sulfur content, lower pulp and paper production in recent years, in

Integrated assessment of the spatial variability of ozone impacts from emissions of nitrogen oxides.

This paper examines the ozone (O3) damages caused by nitrogen oxides (NO(x)) emissions in different locations around the Atlanta metropolitan area during a summer month. We calculate O3 impacts using a new integrated assessment model that links pollution emissions to their chemical transformation, transport, population exposures, and effects on human health. We find that increased NO(x) emissions in rural areas around Atlanta increase human exposure to ambient O3 twice as much as suburban emissions. However, increased NO(x) emissions in central city Atlanta actually reduce O3 exposures. For do

Genetic and environmental determinants of plasma nitrogen oxides and risk of ischemic heart disease.

Endothelial dysfunction, caused in part by reduced NO bioavailability, is a feature of hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, smoking, and atherosclerosis. We examined whether cholesterol, blood pressure, smoking status, and polymorphisms in the endothelial NO synthase gene (NOS 3) influence NO production (as assessed by the plasma levels of nitrogen oxides, NO(x)) in middle-aged men. We also determined whether plasma NO(x) or NOS 3 genotype predicted the risk of is chemic heart disease (IHD). We studied 3052 men who were initially free of IHD and recruited from 9 UK primary care practices. Blood

Stimulatory effects of sulfur and nitrogen oxides on carcinogen activation in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

The occurrence of inflammatory processes and of cancer in the human respiratory tract is intimately associated. One of the major factors in this is probably the recruitment of and stimulated activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PML) in conjunction with the ability of these cells to convert various carcinogens to their ultimate active metabolites. In this study, we demonstrate that nitrite and sulfite, the major dissolution products of the environmental pollutants nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide in water enhance the metabolic activation of trans-7,8-dihydroxy-7,8-dihydrobenzo[a]pyrene

Nitrogen oxides and hydroxyguanidines: formation of donors of nitric and nitrous oxides and possible relevance to nitrous oxide formation by nitric oxide synthase.

The involvement of nitric oxide in numerous biological functions has led to the intense study of nitric oxide (NO) generation by the nitric oxide synthases (NOS) responsible. In addition to NO, nitric oxide synthases produce N(G)-hydroxy-L-arginine, superoxide anion and, indirectly, NOx species such as peroxynitrite and, possibly, nitrous oxide (N2O). Consequently, the interactions of N(G)-hydroxy-L-arginine with NO and other oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are of considerable interest. N(G)-Hydroxy-L-arginine and other monosubstituted hydroxyguanidines react with aqueous aerobic NO, peroxynitrite, a

Dinitrite to Dinitrosyl at Manganese: {Mn(NO)2}8 in Redox Transformations of Nitrogen Oxides.

Owing to the highly reactive and transient nature of nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO), the identification of reliable NO/HNO sources is of paramount interest for the development of therapeutic strategies and for understanding NO/HNO signaling pathways. We demonstrate here that a mononuclear manganese(II)-dinitrite complex (2-Py) reacts with p-methylbenzenethiol (MeArSH) to generate the dinitrosyl species 3-Py/3'-Py. The dinitrosyl {Mn(NO)2}8 core in 3'-Py is capable of facile transfer of both NO and NO- to suitable metal centers. Interestingly, a reaction with pentafluorophenol F5ArOH with

Experimental investigation of bluff body geometry effects on nitrogen oxides emissions from Cambridge stratified burner.

In this study, a series of experiments are done to analyze the effect of bluff body geometry on the NOx reduction of a natural gas-air stratified swirl burner. The stratified burner of Cambridge University is chosen to study the mentioned geometrical effect, and the geometry modification of bluff body is used as a simple method for NOx reduction, which can be easily applied to the systems using these burners, including gas turbines. The bluff body geometrical change to an annular bluff body is inspired by the fact that the areas in which the edge of the bluff body is in contact with the unburn
