PM2.5-related DNA methylation and the association with lung function in non-smokers.

PM2.5 exposure leads to lung function alteration. The potential pathway underlying above association, especially the role of DNA methylation is unclear. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the associations of personal PM2.5 concentrations with DNA methylation at the epigenome-wide level, and investigate how PM2.5-related DNA methylation affects lung function. A total of 402 observations of non-smokers were selected from the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. PM2.5 exposure was estimated through a model established in the same population. Blood DNA methylation levels were determined through Illumina

The impact of smoking in the home on the health outcomes of non-smoker occupants in the UK.

Smoking in the home remains a key source of exposure to secondhand smoke for non-smokers, particularly since the UK public smoking ban in 2007. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all UK evidence on the impact of secondhand smoke exposure in the home on health and behavioural outcomes in non-smoker occupants. MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify all relevant UK empirical studies from 2000 to June 2011. A qualitative overview of the evidence is presented. Exposure to secondhand smoke in UK homes was found to be associated with serious negative

The comparative evaluation of 1% alendronate gel as local drug delivery system in chronic periodontitis in smokers and non smokers: Randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a progressive disease of microbial origin involving the loss of supporting tissues of the teeth resulting from host inflammatory and immunologic reactions. The standard approach to the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases for a number of years has been mechanical therapy and if required surgical intervention Researcher thought of creating a treatment modality where by altering the host response, the destructive host mechanisms could be interfered affecting the final outcome of the disease process. AIM: The present study aims to explore the efficacy o

Would placing pictorial health warnings on waterpipe devices reduce waterpipe tobacco smoking? A qualitative exploration of Egyptian waterpipe smokers' and non-smokers' responses.

BACKGROUND: Although Egypt places four generic pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on the front and back half of waterpipe tobacco packs (WTPs), waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) rates have continued to rise. It has been suggested that PHWs would be more salient if placed on the waterpipe device itself. This qualitative study explored how participants perceived the effects placing PHWs on waterpipe devices would have on warning salience and uptake or quitting of WTS. METHODS: We conducted 10 focus groups and 10 in-depth interviews with 90 adult waterpipe smokers and non-smokers, men and women, who

Drug Survival of Biological Therapies in Smokers and Non-Smokers With Psoriasis: A Retrospective Cohort Study Using Data From the Australasian Psoriasis Registry.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a modifiable risk factor that increases the likelihood of developing psoriasis and the severity of the disease. In recent years, biological therapies have transformed the management of psoriasis. There is conflicting evidence about whether smoking affects the efficacy of biologics. The aim of this study was to assess drug survival and the efficacy of the first biologic for psoriasis in smokers compared with non-smokers. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using data from the Australasian Psoriasis Registry. Participants with psoriasis who met Pharmaceutical B

Smoking and Promoter-Specific Deoxyribonucleic Acid Methylation of the Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Gene: Methylation of Smokers and Non-Smokers Differs Significantly during Withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is well known in psychiatric disorders to modulate hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. Disturbances of ANP have been described in early abstinent alcohol-dependent patients. This is the first longitudinal investigation on cytosine-phosphatidyl-guanine (CpG)-island promoter methylation of the ANP gene in the blood of tobacco-dependent patients. METHODS: In a longitudinal approach, we investigated whether changes in ANP serum levels correlated to CpG methylation of the respective gene promoters on days 1, 7, and 14 of tobacco withdrawal. R

Risk factors and biomarkers for post-tuberculosis lung damage in a Chinese cohort of male smokers and non-smokers: protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-tuberculosis lung damage (PTLD) refers to the residual pulmonary impairment following the completion of antituberculosis (TB) therapy, characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms and abnormal pulmonary function. The risk factors and biomarkers for PTLD have been scarcely investigated. More importantly, whether and to what extent cigarette smoking is involved in PTLD remain to be known. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This prospective observational study will enrol 400 male smoking or non-smoking patients aged 25-65 years, with newly confirmed active TB between 2022 and 2024, fro

A cross-sectional survey investigating the desensitisation of graphic health warning labels and their impact on smokers, non-smokers and patients with COPD in a London cohort.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of graphic health warning labels (GHWL) in different individuals, including patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Investigating knowledge and attitudes may allow better implementation of future public health policies. We hypothesised that differences in the impact of GHWL exist between non-smokers, smokers and patients with COPD, with decreased efficacy in those groups who are longer and more frequently exposed to them. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 163 participants (54% male, aged 21-80) including 60 non-sm

The effects of smoking on labour after uncomplicated pregnancy: a comparison between the progress and outcome of labour in 400 smokers and 400 matched non-smokers.

A comparison was made between the progress of labour and its outcome after an uncomplicated pregnancy, in 400 smokers and 400 non-smokers. Strict selection criteria were applied to eliminate, as far as possible, the variables which might have influenced labour in both groups and to ensure that the two groups of women were matched. The duration of labour was longer in smokers, who also had a higher incidence of caesarean sections. Smokers had a higher incidence of retained placenta and postpartum haemorrhage. The neonates of smokers had a higher incidence of problems in the immediate post-deliv

A novel stress-based intervention reduces cigarette use in non-treatment seeking smokers.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable mortality worldwide. Since current smoking cessation aids show only modest efficacy, new interventions are needed. Given the evidence that stress is a potent trigger for smoking, the present randomized clinical trial tested whether stress could augment the effects of a memory updating (retrieval-extinction) intervention. Non-treatment seeking smokers (n = 76) were assigned to one of four conditions composed of either a stressful or non-stressful psychosocial challenge followed by either smoking or neutral cues. Ten minutes after this manipulation

Targeted next-generation sequencing of TP53 in oral tongue carcinoma from non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the etiology and genomic underpinnings of Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OTSCC) in patients who lack traditional risk factors, yet the incidence is increasing. In particular, the rate, and role, of TP53 mutations in this cohort has been heavily debated in the literature. METHODS: Tumor DNA from forty-three non-smokers with OTSCC underwent next generation sequencing of TP53. RESULTS: Sixty percent of samples contained a TP53 mutation. The G > T transversion rate was 5.7 %. TP53 status did not differ by age. CONCLUSIONS: OTSCC in non-smokers have TP

Blood pressure-lowering effect of repeated Waon therapy in non-smokers with hypertension.

Waon therapy (WT) has been used as a thermal therapy in chronic heart failure patients. However, its effect in patients with hypertension is unclear. This study aimed to reveal the hypotensive effect of WT in patients with hypertension. WT was performed on 31 patients with hypertension (63.9 ± 11.9 years, male: 17) on standard hypertension treatment focusing on lifestyle modification and medication. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured before and after WT using an upper arm automated sphygmomanometer. We investigated the effect of single and repeated (1 time/d, >5 times) WT ses

Characterization of epithelial oral dysplasia in non-smokers: First steps towards precision medicine.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco usage is the strongest risk factor in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which mandates careful screening for oral cancers in smokers. However, there are indications that oral potentially malignant lesions, such as oral epithelial dysplasia (OED), in non-smokers (NS) have a higher cancer risk than those in smokers. Without tobacco as an etiology, the development of these lesions in NS may suggest genetic susceptibility. The increasing incidence of OSCC in NS calls for a better understanding of the natural history of OED in NS as compared to that of smok

Acrolein Exposure in U.S. Tobacco Smokers and Non-Tobacco Users: NHANES 2005-2006.

BACKGROUND: Acrolein is a highly reactive α,β unsaturated aldehyde and respiratory irritant. Acrolein is formed during combustion (e.g., burning tobacco or biomass), during high-temperature cooking of foods, and in vivo as a product of oxidative stress and polyamine metabolism. No biomonitoring reference data have been reported to characterize acrolein exposure for the U.S. OBJECTIVES: Our goals were to a) evaluate two acrolein metabolites in urine--N-acetyl-S-(3-hydroxypropyl)-L-cysteine (3HPMA) and N-acetyl-S-(2-carboxyethyl)-L-cysteine (CEMA)--as biomarkers of exposure to acrolein for the
