Where octagonal geometry meets chaos: A new S-Box for advanced cryptographic systems.

Substitution Box (S-Box) has had been a cardinal component of various cryptographic systems. In this paper, we introduce a novel S-Box design that merges octagonal geometry with chaotic dynamics to enhance the security effects of the cryptographic systems. In particular, the proposed method leverages the geometric properties of octagons and the unpredictability of chaotic maps to construct a novel S-Box with improved security features. The mathematical construct octagon carries out the necessary operation of confusion in the proposed S-Box. The centres of these octagons are hypothetically crea

Evolutionary Algorithms for Boolean Functions in Diverse Domains of Cryptography.

The role of Boolean functions is prominent in several areas including cryptography, sequences, and coding theory. Therefore, various methods for the construction of Boolean functions with desired properties are of direct interest. New motivations on the role of Boolean functions in cryptography with attendant new properties have emerged over the years. There are still many combinations of design criteria left unexplored and in this matter evolutionary computation can play a distinct role. This article concentrates on two scenarios for the use of Boolean functions in cryptography. The first use

Complexity and schizophrenia.

Complexity estimators have been broadly utilized in schizophrenia investigation. Early studies reported increased complexity in schizophrenia patients, associated with a higher variability or "irregularity" of their brain signals. However, further investigations showed reduced complexities, thus introducing a clear divergence. Nowadays, both increased and reduced complexity values are reported. The explanation of such divergence is a critical issue to understand the role of complexity measures in schizophrenia research. Considering previous arguments a complementary hypothesis is advanced: if

How a responsive reproduction factor is determinant in a prey-predator dynamics: A numerical and analytical study in a discrete-time model.

In this work, we investigate the dynamics of a discrete-time prey-predator model considering a prey reproductive response as a function of the predation risk, with the prey population growth factor governed by two parameters. The system can evolve toward scenarios of mutual or only of predators extinction, or species coexistence. We analytically show all different types of equilibrium points depending on the ranges of growth parameters. By numerical study, we find the occurrence of quasiperiodic, chaotic, and hyperchaotic behaviors. Our analytical results are corroborated by the numerical ones

Neural dynamics impairments in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients and their associations with clinical characteristics: An observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system. It remains unclear whether pathological changes in ALS can lead to abnormalities in neural dynamics and how these abnormalities relate to key clinical characteristics of ALS. METHODS: Nonlinear neural dynamics analyses of electroencephalography (EEG) sensorimotor channels were conducted using recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), permutation Lempel-Ziv complexity (PLZC), shannon entropy (ShannonE) and permutation entropy (PermEn). Whole-brain spatiotemporal topol

Nonlinear Measures Applied to Spontaneous Infant Movement Analysis: A Scoping Review.

Spontaneous movement analysis provides valuable information about the maturation of the central nervous system and the emergence of motor control strategies in very young babies. Nonlinear measures capture dynamic aspects of movement that cannot be represented by linear methods. However, their implementation in clinical practice faces challenges, including the lack of standardized protocols and accessible tools for routine use. This scoping review aimed to map and characterize the nonlinear measures used to analyze spontaneous infant movement, including assessment context, instruments, data co

Non-linear predictive modeling and comprehensive meta-analysis of rectal temperature in Santa Inês sheep: a systematic review of thermal challenges and biometerological trends.

A systematic and bibliometric review, combined with a meta-analysis, was used to adjust an equation for estimating the physiological responses of Santa Inês sheep subjected to different thermal challenges. The systematic review compiled data on physiological responses and the thermal environment, which were then used in the meta-analysis to adjust regression models. The bibliometric analysis mapped the relationships among studies, highlighting their usefulness in interpreting research findings and biases. Addressing prior methodological critiques, the core of this study involves replacing the

Finding order in chaos: influences of environmental complexity and predictability on development.

Environments are dynamic and complex. Some children experience more predictable early life environments than others. Here, we consider how moment-by-moment complexity and predictability in our early environments influence development. New studies using wearable sensors are quantifying this environmental variability at a fine temporal resolution across hierarchically structured physical and social features. We identify three types of predictability: periodicities ('at X time intervals, Y happens'), stability ('given statex, statex+1 is known'), and contingency ('when I do X, Y happens'). We dis

On the nonlinear relationship between wall shear stress topology and multi-directionality in coronary atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this paper we investigate twelve multi-directional/topological wall shear stress (WSS) derived metrics and their relationships with the formation of coronary plaques in both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and dynamic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) frameworks. While low WSS is one of the most established biomechanical markers associated with coronary atherosclerosis progression, alone it is limited. Multi-directional and topological WSS derived metrics have been shown to be important in atherosclerosis related mechanotransduction and near-wall transport proce

Granger causality test with nonlinear neural-network-based methods: Python package and simulation study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Causality defined by Granger in 1969 is a widely used concept, particularly in neuroscience and economics. As there is an increasing interest in nonlinear causality research, a Python package with a neural-network-based causality analysis approach was created. It allows performing causality tests using neural networks based on Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), or Multilayer Perceptron (MLP). The aim of this paper is to present the nonlinear method for causality analysis and the created Python package. METHODS: The created functions with the a

Impact of extreme weather on dengue fever infection in four Asian countries: A modelling analysis.

The rapid spread of dengue fever (DF) infection has posed severe threats to global health. Environmental factors, such as weather conditions, are believed to regulate DF spread. While previous research reported inconsistent change of DF risk with varying weather conditions, few of them evaluated the impact of extreme weather conditions on DF infection risk. This study aims to examine the short-term associations between extreme temperatures, extreme rainfall, and DF infection risk in South and Southeast Asia. A total of 35 locations in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand were included,

Dynamic origin of spike and wave discharges in the brain.

Spike and wave discharges are the main electrographic characteristic of a number of epileptic brain disorders including childhood absence epilepsy and photosensitive epilepsy. The basic dynamic mechanism that underlies the occurrence of these abnormal electrical patterns in the brain is not well understood. The current paper aims to provide a dynamic explanation for features and generation mechanism of spike and wave discharges in the brain. The main proposition of this study is that epileptic seizures could be interpreted as a resonance phenomenon rather than a limit cycle behavior. To shows

Regular transport dynamics produce chaotic travel times.

In the hope of making passenger travel times shorter and more reliable, many cities are introducing dedicated bus lanes (e.g., Bogota, London, Miami). Here we show that chaotic travel times are actually a natural consequence of individual bus function, and hence of public transport systems more generally, i.e., chaotic dynamics emerge even when the route is empty and straight, stops and lights are equidistant and regular, and loading times are negligible. More generally, our findings provide a novel example of chaotic dynamics emerging from a single object following Newton's laws of motion in

Non-linear failure patterns in urban road networks exposed to flooding.

Urban road networks are highly sensitive to flooding, yet the systemic consequences of inundation on their structural and functional organization remain insufficiently understood. This study introduces a scale-independent analytical framework that integrates complex network measures such as degree, closeness, and betweenness centrality with community-structure analysis to quantify how flooding transforms network connectivity, accessibility, and mesoscale cohesion. This study assesses the impact of river flooding on the urban road network under two scenarios: a 100-year return period flood and

Reclassifying transcranial pulse stimulation as TNUS: Nonlinear mechanics necessitate departure from the ITRUSST framework.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial ultrasound has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation modality for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its clinical translation is hindered by inconsistent biophysical classification between quasi-linear low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) and nonlinear pulse-based approaches. OBJECTIVE: To propose a Transcranial Nonlinear Ultrasound Stimulation (TNUS) framework for the formal reclassification of Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS), enabling clear differentiation of nonlinear wave mechanics from quasi-linear acoustics. METHODS: This perspective revie

Robust full-parameter control method: Constructing multiscroll HNN via memristor.

Existing methods for constructing multiscroll Hopfield neural network (HNN) result in the drawbacks of high sensitivity of model form to scroll count and growing complexity, posing bottlenecks and inconveniences for practical applications. To address this issue, this paper proposes a robust full-parameter control method to construct a novel memristive chain HNN (MCHNN) yielding multiscroll attractors, based on a newly designed memristor. By theoretical and numerical methods, the electrical characteristics of the memristor are analyzed in detail. Notably, the MCHNN features a simpler chain topo

Study of the Immediately Detection of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury by Feature Engineering on Electroencephalography.

The electroencephalographic (EEG) diagnosis of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is not usually timely, and the detection is often performed several hours or days after the trauma, leading to a decrease in the accuracy of its detection. In this study, EEG signals are recorded immediately after mTBI by connecting a bipolar single lead to injured animals. And three types of EEG features, namely time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear dynamics, are screened for optimal feature subset in mTBI detection. First, EEG signals of animals are recorded before and after establishing the animal model

Improving disaggregation models of malaria incidence by ensembling non-linear models of prevalence.

Maps of disease burden are a core tool needed for the control and elimination of malaria. Reliable routine surveillance data of malaria incidence, typically aggregated to administrative units, is becoming more widely available. Disaggregation regression is an important model framework for estimating high resolution risk maps from aggregated data. However, the aggregation of incidence over large, heterogeneous areas means that these data are underpowered for estimating complex, non-linear models. In contrast, prevalence point-surveys are directly linked to local environmental conditions but are

Sensitivity of Chaos Measures in Detecting Stress in the Focusing Control Mechanism of the Short-Sighted Eye.

When fixating on a stationary object, the power of the eye's lens fluctuates. Studies have suggested that changes in these so-called microfluctuations in accommodation may be a factor in the onset and progression of short-sightedness. Like many physiological signals, the fluctuations in the power of the lens exhibit chaotic behaviour. A breakdown or reduction in chaos in physiological systems indicates stress to the system or pathology. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the chaos in fluctuations of the power of the lens changes with refractive error, i.e. how short-sighted a s

[Research on living tree volume forecast based on PSO embedding SVM].

In order to establish volume model, living trees have to be fallen and be divided into many sections, which is a kind of destructive experiment. So hundreds of thousands of trees have been fallen down each year in China. To solve this problem, a new method called living tree volume accurate measurement without falling tree was proposed in the present paper. In the method, new measuring methods and calculation ways are used by using photoelectric theodolite and auxiliary artificial measurement. The diameter at breast height and diameter at ground was measured manually, and diameters at other hei
