Relationship between haematological data and radiation doses of TEPCO workers before and after the FDNNP accident.

We evaluated the correlation between radiation dose and the medical examination data of Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc (TEPCO) employees working during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in 2011. This study included 2164 male TEPCO workers who received periodic medical examinations from March 2006 to January 2013. First, we conducted log-linear regression analyses using the haematological data of 585 emergency workers and confounding factors to examine the effect of internal radiation exposure in March 2011. Since external radiation exposure was a major infl

Cancer incidence near nuclear facilities in Korea (2005-2022): implications of regional socioeconomic status and industrial context.

BACKGROUND: As nuclear energy expands globally as a low-carbon power source, ongoing public health surveillance remains important for populations residing near nuclear facilities. Although ionizing radiation is an established carcinogen, population-level patterns of cancer incidence near nuclear installations have shown heterogeneity across tumor types and regional settings. METHODS: This nationwide, cross-sectional study used Korea's National Health Information Database (2005-2022), comprising over 103 million person-years of observation from residents living within 30 km of four nuclear pow

Update and improvement of the global krypton-85 emission inventory.

Krypton-85 is mainly produced in nuclear reactors by fission of uranium and plutonium and released during chopping and dissolution of spent fuel rods in nuclear reprocessing facilities. As noble gas it is suited as a passive tracer for evaluation of atmospheric transport models. Furthermore, research is ongoing to assess its quality as an indicator for clandestine reprocessing activities. This paper continues previous efforts to compile a comprehensive historic emission inventory for krypton-85. Reprocessing facilities are the by far largest emitters of krypton-85. Information on sources and c

Radioactivity from Fukushima Dai-ichi in air over Europe; part 2: what can it tell us about the accident?

It is shown which information can be extracted from the monitoring of radionuclides emitted from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant and transported to Europe. In this part the focus will be on the analysis of the concentration ratios. While (131)I, (134)Cs and (137)Cs were reported by most stations, other detected radionuclides, reported by some, are (95)Nb, (129m)Te, (132)Te, (132)I, (136)Cs and (140)La. From their activity ratios a mean burn-up of 26.7 GWd/t of the fuel from which they originated is estimated. Based on these data, inventories of radionuclides present at the time of t

COVID-19 Vaccination in a Former Fukushima Nuclear Accident Evacuation Area: COVID-19 Vaccination for Former Evacuees.

After the Fukushima accident in 2011, approximately 160000 residents were forced to evacuate the site. The evacuation order has since been lifted and the Japanese government is now advancing a return strategy. As the return proceeds, deterioration of health indicators and measures in the municipalities around the nuclear power plant remains unchanged. This affected the local governments' coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination drive during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, municipalities keep track of residents' information and implement health-related measures. However, many residents evacu

Medical management: major lessons learned from the Chernobyl accident (the review).

Thirty-five years have passed since the moment of the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. It is quite a sufficient period to assess the correctness of the organisation of medical care for victims, to summarise the results of monitoring the health status of various groups of persons involved in the accident, including its direct participants. Radiation from a massive source of relatively uniform gamma radiation and a heterogeneous source of beta radiation can cause affected people to develop acute radiation syndrome (ARS) of varying severity, including non-curable forms of the diseas

[Disaster nursing: one nurse's role and experience during the Fukushima Power Plant disaster following the Great East Japan Earthquake].

The Richter-scale 9.0 earthquake that struck Northeast Japan on March 11th, 2011 caused a tsunami that damaged the Fukushima No. 1 Power Plant and released enormous amounts of radiation into the environment. Many area residents were evacuated to several protected fallout shelters. Prior to the tsunami, Fukashima had around 505,760 residents over 65 years of age, comprising 24.9% of the city's pre-tsunami population of Fukushima (City of Fukushima, 2011). The high proportion of elderly contributed to difficulties encountered in evacuating and caring for Fukushima citizens in the immediate after

Stress Corrosion Cracking Behavior of TP 439 and 690 TT under Film-Forming Amine Environment.

Film-forming amines have been widely used in thermal power plants for maintenance after shutdown, and there are more and more applications and researches in nuclear power secondary circuits for this purpose. However, in the direction of stress corrosion cracking, there is not much research on the influence of film-forming amines on metal materials. This article uses the high temperature slow strain rate test (SSRT) method to evaluate the influence of a commercial film-forming amine on the stress corrosion cracking behavior of two conventional island materials for PWR nuclear power plants. Thes

Atmospheric 14CH4, 14CO2 and 37Ar measurements around a Swiss pressurized water reactor during an annual revision period.

Since the 1980s, radiocarbon (14C) has gained attention as a valuable tool to quantify the amount of fossil and non-fossil emissions of CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere. Since the 1970s, however, important 14C emissions in the atmosphere also occur through the operation of nuclear power plants. The limited knowledge about these emissions challenges the use of 14C as a universal source apportionment tool. Depending on the reactor type, 14C is emitted in different forms; in particular, pressurized water reactors emit 14C as a mixture of 14CH4 and 14CO2. However, few atmospheric 14C measurements clo

Comparative study of approached cancer incidence in a cohort of permanent nuclear workers with that in a sample of French population, period 2009-2018.

While many studies have been conducted on mortality in nuclear workers, morbidity remains less studied in these populations. This study aimed to assess the algorithm-derived incidence of cancer in a population of French nuclear workers, by using medico-administrative data from the National Health Data System (SNDS) as no national cancer registry is available, and to compare it with a general population sample. The study cohort included permanent workers with at least 1 year's work history in the company Electricité de France, monitored for ionizing radiation exposure at least once over the per

Assessment of chromosome aberrations in large Japanese field mice (Apodemus speciosus) in Namie Town, Fukushima.

PURPOSE: After the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in Japan on March 11 2011, the surroundings became contaminated with radionuclides. To understand the possible biological effects after chronic low dose-rate radiation in contaminated areas of Fukushima, we assessed the effects in large Japanese field mice (Apodemus speciosus) by means of chromosome aberration analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected A. speciosus in five sites around Namie Town, Fukushima (contaminated areas) and in two sites in Hirosaki City, Aomori (control areas, 350 km north of FDNPP) from autu

The Million Person Study, whence it came and why.

PURPOSE: The study of low dose and low-dose rate exposure is of immeasurable value in understanding the possible range of health effects from prolonged exposures to radiation. The Million Person Study (MPS) of low-dose health effects was designed to evaluate radiation risks among healthy American workers and veterans who are more representative of today's populations than are the Japanese atomic bomb survivors exposed briefly to high-dose radiation in 1945. A million persons were needed for statistical reasons to evaluate low-dose and dose-rate effects, rare cancers, intakes of radioactive ele

Leukemia in the proximity of a German boiling-water nuclear reactor: evidence of population exposure by chromosome studies and environmental radioactivity.

Exceptional elevation of children's leukemia appearing 5 years after the 1983 startup of the Krümmel nuclear power plant, accompanied by a significant increase of adult leukemia cases, led to investigations of radiation exposures of the population living near the plant. The rate of dicentric chromosomes in peripheral lymphocytes of seven parents of children with leukemia and in 14 other inhabitants near the plant was significantly elevated and indicated ongoing exposures over the years of its operation. These findings led to the hypothesis that chronic reactor leakages had occurred. This assum

Agent-Centred Nuclear Safety Principles for Small Modular Reactors.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are among the new designs that promise more compact nuclear power plants (NPPs) with scalable generation capacity and shorter construction time, while retaining emission-free electricity in exchange for small amounts of manageable radioactive waste per kWh of generated electricity. Their size and modular design contribute to the growing popularity of SMRs. However, these features also present risk scenarios that do not apply to large, conventional NPPs, such as when a buyer and SMR manufacturer are located in different nations with different regulations and standa
