Evidence summary and nurse-led algorithm development of clinical guidance documents on sexual health for female breast cancer survivors: A systematic review.

AIM: To develop a nurse-led clinical algorithm based on recommendations from high- and average-quality clinical guidance documents (CGDs), using the nursing process as a framework, to standardize sexual healthcare for female breast cancer survivors (FBCS) and clarify core nursing roles in multidisciplinary care. BACKGROUND: Sexual health is a prevalent yet frequently neglected concern among FBCS, significantly impacting their quality of life. Current evidence-summary literature synthesizes recommendations from CGDs, yet often fails to translate them into executable clinical pathways due to th

Nursing leadership for sustainable endoscopy: a narrative review and practice framework.

Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a resource-intensive clinical service that generates substantial waste, consumes water and energy, and depends on disposable accessories, sterile packaging, and complex reprocessing pathways. Although green endoscopy has received increasing attention, current sustainability strategies have often emphasized physician decision-making, technological innovation, or industry-level redesign, while the practical contribution of endoscopy nurses remains insufficiently defined. This narrative review developed a nursing-centred framework for sustainable endoscopy practice,

Orthostatic hypotension in older nursing home residents who fall: are they dizzy?

Orthostatic hypotension (OH) and dizziness have been linked to older adult falls. As a treatable condition, the detection of OH is of clinical importance to falls prevention. Gaps in the literature about symptoms associated with OH among older adult fallers, such as dizziness led to this secondary analysis of blood pressure data and reported symptoms. Of the 194 Registered Nurse (RN) documented falls, most (n = 91; 46.9%) failed to meet the prevailing diagnostic criteria for OH; 18 (9.2%) met criteria; and 8 (4%) nearly met the OH criteria. OH determinations were incomplete or absent in 41% (n

Sedatives and Sedation at the End of Life in Nursing Homes: A Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: There is scarce information about sedation in nursing homes at the end of life. We aimed to assess (1) the use of sedatives generally and "sedatives with continuous effect," based on objective operational criteria, within the last week of life in nursing homes and (2) factors associated with this treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study, using the nursing homes' medical records. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Residents who died in 4 German nursing homes from January 2015 to December 2017 and whose medical records were available (n = 512). METHODS: Sedatives analyzed were those r

Treatment of heart failure in nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of chronic heart failure (HF), both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment should be employed in HF patients. Although HF is highly prevalent in nursing home residents, it is not clear whether the recommendations in the guidelines for pharmacological therapy also are followed in nursing home residents. The aim of this study is to investigate how HF is treated in nursing home residents and to determine to what extent the current treatment corresponds to the guidelines. METHODS: Nursing home residents of five large nursing home care organizations in the

Monitoring apnea of prematurity: validity of nursing documentation and bedside cardiorespiratory monitor.

OBJECTIVE: To compare apnea events recorded by bedside cardiorespiratory monitor and nursing documentation with those detected by visual inspection of continuous electronic cardiorespiratory waveform. METHODS: In a prospective observational study, 20 nonventilated infants of 28 to 33 weeks' gestational age were monitored for apnea during the first 2 postnatal weeks. Apnea was defined as a respiratory pause > 20 seconds or > 15 seconds if associated with a heart rate < 80/min or oxygen saturation < 85%. True apnea was defined as one for which visual inspection of continuous electronic cardiore

Delirium and incident nursing home admission among people with and without dementia.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common, preventable hospital complication and a recognised risk factor for cognitive decline, but its association with both the risk and timing of nursing home admission remains uncertain, particularly in relation to dementia. METHODS: We conducted a matched cohort study of hospitalised UK Biobank participants with linked hospital records (1997-2022). Episodes of delirium were identified using ICD-10 codes and matched 1:1 to non-delirium control episodes within no dementia (n = 13 004) and dementia (n = 1790) groups. Matching was performed on age, sex, hospital frail

Incidence and risk factors for nursing-related intraoperative incidents: A 5-year retrospective study at a Japanese tertiary care hospital.

AIM: Nursing-related intraoperative incidents, such as specimen loss and retained surgical items, pose serious risks to patient safety. These events may be influenced by surgical complexity, team structure, and nursing experience. However, data on the specific impact of these factors, particularly in Japan, remain limited. This study aimed to determine the incidence of nursing-related intraoperative incidents and identify clinical and procedural factors associated with their occurrence. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of all surgeries performed at a tertiary care hos

Use of physical restraints in nursing homes: a multicentre cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although many countries have implemented strict legal rules, the prevalence of physical restraints in nursing homes seems to remain high. In Switzerland, data related to the frequency of physical restraints are scarce and little is known about associations with resident and nursing home characteristics. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and types of physical restraints in nursing homes in two Swiss cantons and to explore whether resident-related and organisational factors are associated with the use of physical restraints. METHODS: We conducted a multicentre

Effects of increased nurses' workload on quality documentation of patient information at selected Primary Health Care facilities in Vhembe District, Limpopo Province.

BACKGROUND: Recording of information on multiple documents increases professional nurses' responsibilities and workload during working hours. There are multiple registers and books at Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities in which a patient's information is to be recorded for different services during a visit to a health professional. Antenatal patients coming for the first visit must be recorded in the following documents: tick register; Prevention of Mother-ToChild Transmission (PMTCT) register; consent form for HIV and AIDS testing; HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) register (if tested posit

Using body-worn cameras in emergency departments: a pilot project.

Nurses and other emergency department (ED) staff often experience verbal and physical abuse as part of their everyday work. Body-worn cameras are one tool that ED staff can use to try to reduce workplace violence and abuse and have been shown to be effective in other healthcare environments, such as mental health units. This article describes a pilot service evaluation which used a survey to assess the effectiveness of using body-worn cameras for staff in the author's ED. Findings suggest that nurses believed the cameras provided support when they were confronted by abusive or aggressive patie

Indwelling urinary catheter use at the end of life: a retrospective audit.

This audit aimed to measure: the prevalence of indwelling urinary catheters in patients at the end of life; the use of nursing documentation relating to catheter insertion and care; and prevalence of continence screening on admission. The audit involved a retrospective examination of case notes of patients who died on two oncology wards and a hospice at a large teaching hospital in the south of England. The audit showed that 63% of patients had an indwelling catheter during their admission. Documentation relating to urinary catheter insertion and care was present in 75% of cases, and 75% of pa

The patient observer: does the hands-and-knees posture during labor help to rotate the occiput posterior fetus?

Retrospective chart review was conducted for four low-risk women with full-term, healthy fetuses in the occiput posterior position. The first woman pushed for over two hours and delivered a 6 lb, 8 3/4 oz baby by cesarean section. The second woman delivered a 5 lb, 2 3/4 oz baby posteriorly by vacuum extraction and had a third-degree laceration. The third and fourth women both assumed the hands-and-knees posture during labor; their infants weighted 7 lb, 7 3/4 oz and 7 lb, 11 3/4 oz, respectively. Both of these fetuses rotated to the anterior position and were born spontaneously without compli
