Low Frequency of IgE-Mediated Food Hypersensitivity in Mastocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with mastocytosis have an increased risk for severe anaphylaxis, particularly to Hymenoptera venoms. These patients may also develop more often systemic hypersensitivity reactions to certain foods. However, this issue has not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence and severity of food hypersensitivity (FH) reactions among patients with clonal mast cell disorders (CMDs). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted among 204 (age ≥18 years) consecutive patients who presented with confirmed CMD (170 with mastocytosis and 34 with monoclonal mas

Prevention and Treatment of Peanut Allergy.

Early introduction of peanut protein reduces allergy prevalence by approximately 80%, with efficacy diminishing as introduction is delayed. Appropriate prevention involves ingestion of approximately 2 g of peanut protein weekly for infants at low risk and 4 to 6 g weekly for infants at high risk. Population-level implementation that targets all infants achieves greater reduction in disease burden than approaches that target only high-risk groups, although disparities exist among some ethnic groups and groups with restricted access to care. Peanut immunotherapy initiated in younger children (1

Self-reported prevalence and risk factors associated with food hypersensitivity in Mexican young adults.

BACKGROUND: Food hypersensitivity (FH) is defined as any unfavorable reaction after the ingestion, contact, or inhalation of a food. Few FH prevalence studies have been performed in the Mexican adult population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of self-reported FH and probable food allergy (FA) among a sample of Mexican young adults and to determine the most commonly involved foods, associated symptoms, and risk factors. METHODS: We designed an observational, cross-sectional study in which 1,253 young adults (aged 18-25 years) born in the State of Mexico answered a questionnaire concer

[Food allergy from school age to adulthood].

In young children food allergy is mainly acquired over the gastrointestinal tract and directed to egg and milk. Patients at school age or adult patients, however, often acquire a food allergy over a primary sensitisation to inhalant allergens, in Switzerland primarily over birch pollen. This type of food allergy is directed to plant foods. Apple and hazelnut are the most prevalent allergenic foods in this age group. A birch pollen related food allergy is often accompanied by mild allergic symptoms such as the oral contact urticaria. The relevant allergens are labile to heat and are often toler

BACKGROUND: Poppy seed (Papaver somniferum) allergy is an uncommon but potentially severe form of seed hypersensitivity. Despite the increasing consumption of seeds worldwide, data on poppy seed (PS) allergy remain limited, mostly derived from case reports. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics of PS-allergic children and evaluate the diagnostic performance of conventional and molecular assays. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on children evaluated for suspected PS allergy at a tertiary pediatric allergy center between 2020 and 2024.

[Latex sensitization in 28 patients].

We present a review of 28 cases of sensitization to latex. Skin prick test for latex was performed in subjects suspected of having allergy to latex and many fruits. Recently, many publications have evidenced the importance of sensitization to latex. There are well documented cases of intraoperatory anaphylaxis. Frequently, this happens to children with congenital urologic malformations, spina bifida or myelomeningocele, who undergo numerous surgical operations and vesical catheterizations. Latex-induced allergy also affects health professionals, since they are continuously in contact with late

[Food allergy: the celery-mugwort-spice syndrome. Association with mango allergy?].

Celery allergies are commonly observed in mugwort pollen-allergic patients. This situation is frequently associated with an allergy to spices of the umbelliferous family. Thus a "celery-mugwort-spice syndrome" has been established. In 31 patients (27 females, 4 males) allergy to celery was diagnosed between 1978 and 1982. They were followed up in 1983 and complementary tests (skin and RAST) with various raw vegetables, spices and mugwort pollen were done. For specific diagnosis of allergy to celery skin testing (scratch or prick) with fresh celery bulb was reliable. In contrast, RAST was not s

Hazelnut allergy: from pollen-associated mild allergy to severe anaphylactic reactions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hazelnut allergy can vary between mild oral symptoms and potentially dangerous anaphylaxis. There is a need to predict which subjects are at risk for severe reactions. In this study, possibilities for 'component-resolved diagnosis', based on sensitization to different allergens in hazelnut, are discussed. RECENT FINDINGS: One type of hazelnut allergy can be associated with sensitization to homologues of pollen allergens, predominantly birch, in hazelnut: Cor a 1 (Bet v 1) and Cor a 2 (profilin). These allergens account for relatively mild symptoms. However, subjects can als

Involvement of hidden allergens in food allergic reactions.

BACKGROUND: Hidden allergens in foods can induce allergic reactions. Currently it is not possible to estimate the exact prevalence of these reactions but they are clearly a growing problem. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of the role of hidden allergens (their importance, the types of food involved, and the severity of reactions) in allergic reactions in our geographical area. METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in an adult population. Over a five year period, a total of 530 food reactions were reviewed. RESULTS: One hundred nineteen reactions (22.

Skin manifestations and immunological parameters in childhood food allergy.

According to Hansen's contact rule, the digestive system should be considered as the main shock organ, yet in food allergy, this is not the case. Very often specific food triggers clinical manifestations not involving the digestive system; that is, reactions are manifested either in the respiratory system, as asthma or rhinitis, or in the skin. In these cases the BALT (broncho-alveolar lymphoid tissue) and GALT (gastrointestinal lymphoid tissue) units play a basic role in the sensitizations. The purpose of this study was to determine the most frequent skin manifestations of food allergy among

Mustard allergy confirmed by double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges: clinical features and cross-reactivity with mugwort pollen and plant-derived foods.

BACKGROUND: Mustard IgE-mediated allergy is supposed to be a rare cause of food allergy, and its clinical features and cross-reactivities have not been fully elucidated. METHODS: A prospective study was carried out, recruiting mustard allergic patients, and paired control subjects. A clinical questionnaire was administered, and skin-prick tests (SPT) with panels of aeroallergens and foods, serum extraction for in vitro tests and double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges (DBPCFC) were performed. RESULTS: Thirty-eight mainly adult patients, with 10.5% reporting systemic anaphylaxis, were

Gastrointestinal manifestations of food allergies in pediatric patients.

Foods that account for 90% of allergic reactions in children are cow's milk protein, eggs, peanut, soy, tree nuts, fish, and wheat. Food allergy can manifest as urticaria/angioedema, anaphylaxis, atopic dermatitis, respiratory symptoms, or a gastrointestinal (GI) disorder. GI allergic manifestations can be classified as immunoglobulin E (IgE) mediated (immediate GI hypersensitivity and oral allergy syndrome); "mixed" GI allergy syndromes (involving some IgE components and some non-IgE or T-cell-mediated components) include eosinophilic esophagitis and eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Non-IgE-medi

The natural history of peanut allergy.

Between 1973 and 1985, 114 children, aged 2 to 14 years, underwent double-blind, placebo-controlled, food challenge (DBPCFC) to peanut. Thirty-two of 46 children with symptoms produced by DBPCFC to peanut were included in this longitudinal evaluation. Contact was made with the 32 subjects 2 to 14 years after their positive DBPCFC to peanut. All 32 subjects had exhibited a positive puncture skin test to peanut at the time of the original evaluation. Sixteen subjects had experienced symptoms caused by accidental peanut ingestion in the year before contact. Eight subjects had reacted to accidenta

Characterization of the sensitization profile to lupin in peanut-allergic children and assessment of cross-reactivity risk.

BACKGROUND: Case reports of allergy to lupin, due to primary sensitization or cross-reactions with other legumes, are increasing as a consequence of the augmented use of lupin flour in bakery, pasta formulations and other food items. The main allergens that have been associated with the sensitization to lupin are α- and β-conglutins and, to a lesser extent, γ- and δ-conglutin, but no conclusive data are available so far. The aim of this study was to characterize the sensitization pattern to lupin in a group of 12 Italian children allergic to peanut and identify the specific lupin proteins invo
