Insights into cardiovascular risk and nutritional status in subjects with wheat-related disorders.

Objective: Wheat-related disorders are a spectrum of disorders associated with different autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases. However, it is unclear whether these wheat-related disorders lead to adverse health effects such as cardiovascular risk, nutritional deficiencies etc. The objective of the study was to explore the lipid profiles and the nutritional status of subjects with wheat-related disorders to understand the potential threat of wheat on cardiovascular risk and nutritional deficiency. Method: A total of 1041 subjects who showed wheat-related symptoms were initially tested for the

Appetite disorders in cancer patients: Impact on nutritional status and quality of life.

Cancer patients are at high risk of malnutrition due to several symptoms such as lack of appetite. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of different appetite disorders in cancer patients and their influence on dietary intake, nutritional status, and quality of life. We conducted a cross-sectional study of cancer patients at risk of malnutrition. Nutritional status was studied using Subjective Global Assessment, anthropometry, and grip strength. Dietary intake was evaluated with a 24-h recall, and patients were questioned about the presence of changes in appetite (none, anorexi

Postnatal nutritional treatment of neurocognitive deficits in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Ethanol is the most important teratogen agent in humans. Prenatal alcohol exposure can lead to a wide range of adverse effects, which are broadly termed as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The most severe consequence of maternal alcohol abuse is the development of fetal alcohol syndrome, defined by growth retardation, facial malformations, and central nervous system impairment expressed as microcephaly and neurodevelopment abnormalities. These alterations generate a broad range of cognitive abnormalities such as learning disabilities and hyperactivity and behavioural problems. Socioecon

Nutritional status of young children with inherited blood disorders in western Kenya.

To determine the association between a range of inherited blood disorders and indicators of poor nutrition, we analyzed data from a population-based, cross-sectional survey of 882 children 6-35 months of age in western Kenya. Of children with valid measurements, 71.7% were anemic (hemoglobin < 11 g/dL), 19.1% had ferritin levels < 12 μg/L, and 30.9% had retinol binding protein (RBP) levels < 0.7 μmol/L. Unadjusted analyses showed that compared with normal children, homozygous α(+)-thalassemia individuals had a higher prevalence of anemia (82.3% versus 66.8%, P = 0.001), but a lower prevalence

Functional and metabolic disorders in celiac disease: new implications for nutritional treatment.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic disease causing the inflammation of the proximal small intestine, in genetically predisposed individuals. This is triggered by the consumption of the gluten protein and the side effects of the disease are mitigated by a lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) treatment. The predominant consequence of CD is malnutrition due to malabsorption (with diarrhea, weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, and altered blood parameters), especially in patients who do not show strict adherence to GFD treatment. Recent evidence shows that, despite a lifelong GFD, some functional disor

Hepatocellular injuries observed in patients with an eating disorder prior to nutritional treatment.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Although hepatocellular injuries are occasionally observed in patients with an eating disorder, such as anorexia nervosa (AN), it remains unclear how malnutrition in patients with AN causes hepatocellular damage. In this retrospective study, we aimed to reveal the characteristics of hepatocellular injuries in patients with an eating disorder without any nutritional treatment, to eliminate the possible hepatotoxic effects of nutritional support. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients with an eating disorder who visited St. Luke's International Hospital were enrolled. No nu

Mechanisms by which nutritional disorders cause reduced bone mass in adults.

Nutritional disorders that cause bone loss in adults include disordered eating behaviors (female athlete triad and anorexia nervosa), gastrointestinal diseases (celiac sprue, inflammatory bowel disease, and other malabsorption syndromes), alcoholism, and hypervitaminosis A. These disorders exert their effects on bone through a number of mechanisms, including estrogen deficiency. Deficiencies of anabolic hormones may also be important, including insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), a nutritionally regulated bone trophic factor. In addition, low weight itself is a risk factor for bone loss and

Nutritional issues and supplements in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other neurodegenerative disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Aggressive nutritional intervention has become a cornerstone of treatment for many patients with neuromuscular diseases, in particular, motor neuron disease. Malnutrition is a common problem among patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Over the past decade, the recognition of nutrition as an independent, prognostic factor for survival and disease complications in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis has illustrated the importance of individualized nutritional management in symptomatic treatment. Paramount issues for nutritional management in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis incl

Nutritional disorders among workers in North China during national turmoil.

Previously undescribed disorders of nutrition of thiamin, niacin and pyridoxin were observed among the poor people of North China during periods of prolonged deprivation. These disorders were often elicited or exacerbated by physical exertion. Thiamin deficiency syndromes included great toe pain, heel pain, temporomandibular joint click, and painful click of the knee. Syndromes of niacin deficiency included pellagral scrotal dermatitis, hypersecretion of ear wax, and night terrors. Episodic nocturnal motor hyperfunction was caused by pyridoxin deficiency. Several cases with cardiovascular dise

Nutritional metabolic diseases of poultry and disorders of the biological antioxidant defence system.

Deficiencies or disturbances of nutrition cause a variety of diseases and can arise in different ways. The amount of a particular nutrient in the diet may be insufficient to meet the requirements, the diet may contain substances that inactivate the nutrient or inhibit its absorption/utilisation, or metabolism may be upset by the interaction of dietary and environmental factors. Peroxidation of lipids or oxygen free radical generation in general is a physiological process important for cell metabolism, division and differentiation and also for the biosynthesis of hormones and prostaglandins. The protective role of nutritional antioxidants against oxidative stress in thyroid disorders.

An imbalance between pro-oxidative and antioxidative cellular mechanisms is oxidative stress (OxS) which may be systemic or organ-specific. Although OxS is a consequence of normal body and organ physiology, severely impaired oxidative homeostasis results in DNA hydroxylation, protein denaturation, lipid peroxidation, and apoptosis, ultimately compromising cells' function and viability. The thyroid gland is an organ that exhibits both oxidative and antioxidative processes. In terms of OxS severity, the thyroid gland's response could be physiological (i.e. hormone production and secretion) or pa

Nutritional status in eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders: A pediatric case-control study.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) represent an emerging group of heterogeneous diseases associated with failure to thrive, weight loss, protein-losing enteropathy, and malnutrition. To date, no studies have assessed the nutritional status, vitamin D, and other vitamin levels in patients with non-esophageal EGIDs. We aim to evaluate the nutritional profile of a cohort of children and adolescents with EGIDs. We performed a case-control study, enrolling a total of 98 patients, 38 (39%) patients with EoE, 22 (22%) patients with non-esophageal EGIDs, and 38 (39%) patients with non-all

Nutritional Rickets Due to Severe Food Selectivity in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have detected differences in various measures of bone health between individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their peers. However, these measures do not amount to direct clinical evidence of increased orthopedic pathology in this population. Some of the most compelling evidence to this effect comes from case reports of nutritional rickets in children with ASD. We report on 1 such case that, to our knowledge, is the first report of nutritional rickets in ASD necessitating corrective surgery. METHODS: Case report, review of relevant literature, and implications fo

[Nutritional education protocol in the treatment of eating disorders in the clinical and care settings].

Nutrition education (NE), as part of the treatment of eating disorders (EDs), plays a crucial role in helping patients to change their food attitudes and routines, lose fears, and recover a healthy eating pattern. All these changes may contribute to improving their nutritional status. However, there is a lack of consensus and standardization concerning the procedures to teach it. This work's objective was to elaborate a consensual protocol for NE implementation in the treatment of EDs to help in decision-making regarding which patients are appropriate candidates to receive NE, the agents (fami

Nutritional implications of opioid use disorder: A guide for drug treatment providers.

The number of Americans seeking treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) continues to increase. However, there are important nutritional implications of having OUD that often get overlooked by drug treatment providers. OUDs can cause metabolic changes, constipation, and weight loss, or lead to a lifestyle that results in inadequate food intake and unhealthy eating patterns. Nutritional factors associated with OUD can also hinder treatment outcomes and recovery. Addiction providers tend to give little attention to the nutritional implications of OUD, and this knowledge is rarely incorporated int
