Dietary intake and nutritional status of Korean children and adolescents: a review of national survey data.

In Korea, several national cross-sectional surveys monitor the diet, nutritional status, and health status of children. This continual dedicated national surveillance system contributes to the identification of nutritional and health issues, establishment of public health policies, and development of nutrition recommendations. This paper provides recent information about the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey and describes key nationwide survey findings published in the last 5 years on infant feeding practices and the diet

[The European Association for the Study of Liver (EASL) nutrition guidelines.].

This review explores the latest guidelines on nutrition in patients with chronic liver diseases of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and recent studies on physiopathology, clinical outcomes and possible treatments of malnutrition and sarcopenia in liver cirrhosis. Chronic liver diseases are frequently associated with malnutrition, changes in skeletal muscle and bone quality and quantity. About 20% of patients with compensated liver cirrhosis and 50% of those with decompensated cirrhosis are sarcopenic. Malnutrition and sarcopenia are associated with a higher complicati

Food systems determinants of nutritional health and wellbeing in urban informal settlements: A scoping review in LMICs.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing food and nutritional inequities are apparent in urban settings across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), along with nutrition transition towards ultra-processed diets high in fat, sugar, and salt. In urban informal settlements, characterized by insecurity and inadequate housing and infrastructure, food systems dynamics and their nutritional implications are poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the food system determinants of food and nutrition security in urban informal settlements in LMICs with the goal of identifying effective approaches and ent

Operational research leading to state-level policy change in tuberculosis undernutrition in Chhattisgarh, India.

In India, undernutrition is a key driver of the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic. The high burden of severe and very severe undernutrition leads to higher death rates among those with TB. Despite documentation of weight and height, body mass index calculations to prioritise nutrition support for those with severe and very severe undernutrition are lacking in India's National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme. This state-level operational research in Chhattisgarh led to a change in state-level policy in this regard. The learnings from this operational research-guided policy change have lessons for o

Agenda for Translating Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Weight Management Interventions for Cancer Survivors into Clinical and Community Practice.

Evidence supporting physical activity, diet, and weight management for cancer survivors has grown, leading to the development of guidelines and interventions. The next step is to identify necessary practice and policy changes and to develop a research agenda to inform how interventions can be delivered to survivors most effectively and efficiently in health care settings and by community-based organizations. Here, an agenda is proposed for research, practice, and policy that incorporates recommendations for a range of programming options, a patient-centered, tailored screening and referral app

Regional Overview on the Double Burden of Malnutrition and Examples of Program and Policy Responses: Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Hunger, food insecurity, stunting, anemia, overweight, and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) may coexist in the same person, household, and community in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) is an important cause of disability and premature death, which could be addressed with comprehensive policies such as the Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents. This paper summarizes the main policies and actions aimed to prevent undernutrition and obesity. SUMMARY: Several countries are implementing the Plan of Action,

A Framework for Developing Intake and Use Guidance for Dietary Supplement Bioactives.

Dietary bioactives, which are commonly found in food, beverages, and dietary supplements, include nonessential food components that can support health beyond preventing nutrient deficiencies. Despite their known health benefits and potential for adverse effects, there is limited guidance on appropriate intake levels, safety, and efficacy of these ingredients, particularly those present in dietary supplements. This lack of guidance can be challenging for individuals attempting to make informed decisions about products marketed for health benefits. A previously published perspective proposed a 4

Is the experimental evidence on ultra-processed food and obesity reliable?

Public health experts have issued widespread calls to target ultra-processed foods (UPF) in nutrition policy to prevent obesity and other diet-related chronic diseases. Several short-term crossover feeding studies have examined the effects of UPF consumption on energy intake and body weight, but their findings remain inconclusive, largely due to methodological limitations and imprecision in the Nova classification used to define UPF exposure. Long-term data demonstrating the effectiveness of reducing UPF intake are lacking. Consequently, the available evidence does not establish a causal role

Understanding power in food policy: a critical scoping review of methods to guide future research.

Power disparities in the food system are reflected in food policy processes and outcomes that are failing to address major food system challenges. As interest in investigating and addressing these power disparities grows, it is important to assess the research methods that have been used to examine power in food policy, and how methodological choices shape our understanding. This scoping review critically maps the methodological approaches applied in empirical studies of power in national-level food policy. A systematic search across fourteen databases identified 46 empirical studies published

Vegetarianísh-How "Flexitarian" Eating Patterns Are Defined and Their Role in Global Food-Based Dietary Guidance.

Background/Objectives: A dietary pattern that simply reduces animal-based foods may be more acceptable to consumers than strict vegetarian or vegan diets. The objective of this investigation was to identify the most consistently used definitions of "flexitarian" dietary patterns, or dietary patterns with a reduced amount of animal foods. Then, sets of food-based dietary guidance (FBDG) from different countries and regions were evaluated to determine whether their guidance could accommodate flexitarian diets. Methods: Literature searches yielded 86 total results on flexitarian eating after scre

Research into food portion size: methodological aspects and applications.

Portion sizes for certain foods have been increasing dramatically in recent years alongside obesity rates, concurring with the phenomenon of the portion size effect (more is consumed when more is offered). Portion size may be defined based on different purposes such as for dietary assessment, or therapeutic advice or food labelling, resulting in a variety of measurement methods and specifications. This situation has resulted in disagreements on establishing portion size recommendations by manufacturers, food distributors, restaurants, health professionals and policy makers, contributing to con

Infections in the malnourished: with special reference to malaria and malnutrition in the tropics.

The inter-relationship of malnutrition and infections is generally accepted as being synergistic, one promoting the other. Nevertheless, numerous published reports are available which highlight the contrary, that is, antagonism of poor nutrition to infections. This presentation is a review of such publications with emphasis on malaria and malnutrition in the tropics. The data presented suggest that the effect of poor diets on human malaria is related to the level of protein and energy intake, which in turn have important bearings not only on clinical nutrition but also on nutrition policy and

Practical Application of the Revised Guidelines for the Provision and Assessment of Nutrition Support Therapy in the Adult Critically Ill Patient: A Case Study Approach.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition therapy is an essential component of the care plan for critically ill and injured patients. There is consensus that critically ill patients are at risk for malnutrition, and the associated consequences of increased infectious morbidity, multiorgan dysfunction, prolonged hospitalization, and disproportionate mortality can be minimized with specialized enteral and/or parenteral nutrition therapy. METHODS: In this article, we describe 2 case studies that are intended to introduce the nutrition support clinician to key updates in the recently released Guidelines for Provisio

How can the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis contribute to improving health in developing countries?

The relevance of nutrition during pregnancy and early infancy in defining short-term health and survival has been well established. However, the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm provides a framework to assess the effect of early nutrition and growth on long-term health. This body of literature shows that early nutrition has significant consequences on later health and well-being. In this article, we briefly present the main consequences of malnutrition that affect human growth and development and consider how the DOHaD paradigm, with its evolutionary implications, m

The practices and needs of dietitian in school lunch program in Taiwan.

Nutrition-related problems among school-age children nowadays become potentially serious. In order to prevent obesity and other nutritionally related diseases in the young generation, a school lunch program has been proposed and conducted in Taiwan. It is to ensure that students' nutritional intake meets the daily requirement and to help students develop correct eating habits and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A professional dietitian who has a clear concept regarding food material utilization, cooking methods and nutritional values thus becomes important. However, the majority of schools in Ta
