INTRODUCTION: Protein energy wasting/malnutrition is a strong predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). We aimed to compare the effects of oral and/or intradialytic parenteral nutrition (IDPN) support on nutritional and inflammatory parameters in malnourished patients with MHD.
METHODS: This is an observational study of 56 malnourished patients on MHD. We offered combined oral nutritional support (ONS) and IDPN for 12 months to all patients. Depending on patient choices for treatment, they were classified into four groups: group 1 (ONS only), group 2

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA) experience several nutritional challenges and are prone to develop malnutrition. This observational study aimed to perform a comprehensive nutritional assessment of outpatients diagnosed with RA and SpA, as well as to evaluate methods to identify nutritional risk. Nutritional status was investigated by anthropometric measures, body composition (DXA, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and handgrip strength (HGS). Nutritional risk was classified by Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002) and malnutrition was defined by the Glo

Background: Candidemia remains a life-threatening infection with high mortality despite advances in antifungal therapy. Malnutrition has been suggested as an important contributor to poor outcomes; however, the prognostic value of different nutritional assessment tools in candidemia has not been fully clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nutritional status on prognosis in patients with candidemia and to identify the most reliable nutritional assessment tool. Method: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adult patients diagnosed with candidemia at a tertiary teaching hos

Elevated blood pressure during pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, is in part a result of inflammatory processes related to pregnancy. Reducing risk for pre-eclampsia is important to improve birth outcomes and reduce morbidity and mortality. Nutritional status and dietary intake of key foods and nutrients can aid in the reduction of pre-eclampsia risk. Excessive gestational weight gain is associated with pre-eclampsia risk, however, fluid retention, may be the driver of this relationship. While diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and dietary fiber can reduce pre-eclampsia risk and adherence to a western d

Obesity in childbearing women leads to pregnancy-related complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus, pregnancy-associated hypertensive disorders, and macrosomia. Weight loss helps reduce these complications. Studies show bariatric surgery reduces obesity-related complications during and after pregnancy. However, bariatric surgery might be associated with adverse outcomes, such as low birth weight and small-for-gestational-age infants. In addition, several studies suggest pregnancy occurring less than a year post-bariatric surgery adversely affects pregnancy outcomes and causes micronu

UNLABELLED: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multi-organ disease with significant mortality. Diagnosis of malnutrition is sometimes difficult, and gastrointestinal disorders in patients with SSc may play a significant role in deteriorating nutritional status. Many factors can contribute to the development of eating disorders in this group of patients, including mood disorders, depression, anxiety - may reduce appetite, ulceration and skin changes, may cause difficulties in preparing and eating meals.
AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the nutritional status of patients with SSc.

The incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer has been increasing in the last decades all over the world. Such a steady growth cannot be entirely attributable to more intensive thyroid nodule screening and more sensitive diagnostic procedures. Several environmental factors have changed with sufficient rapidity in the same time frame and may represent credible candidates for this increase. They include modified iodine intake, lifestyle-associated risk factors, exposure to various toxic compounds, pollutants and xenobiotics, nutritional deficiencies, eating habits and comorbidities. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Malnutrition is common in neurologically impaired (NI) children. It is, however, ill-defined and under-diagnosed. If not recognized and treated, it increases the burden of comorbidities and affects the quality of life of these children. The aim of this study was to characterize the nutritional status of a cohort of children followed up at a reference center for cerebral palsy (CP) in Brussels, Belgium, and to investigate possible links with the occurrence of comorbidities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study including all the children fo

OBJECTIVE: Surgery is a major stress factor that activates several inflammatory and catabolic pathways in man. An appropriate nutritional status allows the body to react properly to this stressor and recover in a faster and more efficient manner. On the other hand, malnutrition is related to a worse surgery outcome and to a higher prevalence of comorbidities and mortality. The aims of this study were to evaluate the nutritional status of patients undergoing major surgery and investigate the potential correlation between malnutrition and surgical outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Mini Nutritiona
