Characteristics and Predictors of Occupational Injury Among Career Firefighters.

The purpose of this study was to assess occupational injury characteristics and predictors among career firefighters. A total of 249 firefighters from central Texas and northern California participated in this Internet-based survey. Approximately 27% of firefighters had reported an occupational injury within the previous 12 months. The majority of injuries occurred on the scene of a non-fire call while performing an activity that required lifting, pushing, or pulling. Firefighters' backs were most frequently injured. Of the reported injuries, approximately 18% returned to work on modified duty

Disabling occupational injury in the US construction industry, 1996.

In 1996 the US construction industry comprised 5.4% of the annual US employment but accounted for 7.8% of nonfatal occupational injuries and illness and 9.7% of cases involving at least a day away from work. Information in the published literature on the disability arising from construction injuries is limited. The construction claims experience (n = 35,790) of a large workers' compensation insurer with national coverage was examined. The leading types and sources of disabling occupational morbidity in 1996 in the US construction industry were identified. Disability duration was calculated fro

A state trauma registry as a tool for occupational injury surveillance.

The goal of occupational surveillance is to identify and determine the magnitude of work-related disease and injury and workplace hazards for the purposes of focusing prevention programs and tracking their effectiveness. There are a number of databases that collect information on pieces of the puzzle of workplace exposure and adverse health outcomes. Other than that for the fatalities, none of these datasets specifically describes the most severe occupational injuries or their attendant disability. The goal of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of the Illinois Trauma Registry (ITR) in t

Accidents and injuries in child vehicle occupants in New Zealand.

Records of reported child vehicle occupant fatalities and injuries were examined. Child vehicle occupants accounted for approximately 5 percent of all road injuries and deaths in 1979, with an approximate hospital cost of one million dollars per year. It is thus worth spending considerable sums of money on countermeasures. The problem of parents' perception of risk is illustrated by the observation that annually only one child in 1 000 is injured and one in 50 000 dies as an occupant of a vehicle. International comparisons show New Zealand child occupant accident rates per 100 000 population t

Sharps injuries in a dental specialty hospital: retrospective analysis of occupational risks, 2020-2024.

BACKGROUND: Occupational sharps injuries (OSI) remain a critical occupational health risk for healthcare workers, particularly in dental specialty settings where the use of fine instruments and frequent blood exposure heighten vulnerability. However, systematic data on high-risk populations, procedural factors, and pathogen distribution in dental specialty hospitals remain scarce. This study investigates the incidence, risk factors, and bloodborne infection profiles of sharps injuries in a tertiary dental hospital. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 170 OSI cases reported betw

The impact of major occupational injuries on professional reintegration. A Portuguese medico-legal contribution.

Occupational injuries represent an enormous economic impact for victims, respective families, involved institutions and all the community due to professional outcomes. Work-life prevalence of self-reported occupational injuries in mothers of a birth cohort.

Purpose. This study investigated self-reported occupational injuries among mothers in a large birth cohort study and the relation of their characteristics to different injury outcomes: occurrence, severity, temporal proximity and recurrence. Methods. We asked 4338 women whether they had been in 'an accident at work, even if it did not require medical treatment', and the number of accidents throughout their working life, type of injury and whether it occurred within the last 12 months. Results. Over one-fifth (21.8%) of working-age mothers reported having at least one occupational injury throug

Emergency department surveillance of occupational injuries in Shanghai's Putuo District, People's Republic of China.

PURPOSE: Although the People's Republic of China has an enormous worker population, occupational injury data availability has been hindered by the lack of a national surveillance system. This study compared work with non-work-related injuries by diagnosis, cause, and demographic characteristics of cases treated in a moderate-sized emergency department (ED) in Shanghai. METHODS: Data on all injury cases presenting to the ED were collected prospectively from November 1, 1998 through November 31, 1999 at the Putuo District Hospital. RESULTS: A total of 5200 injuries were recorded; 3175 (61.1%)

This occurred even after the recent introduction of numerous health and occupational safety regulations. The objective of the present study was to identify the specific mechanisms of minor occupational injuries in the construction sector. METHODS: In 2000, there were 235,853 minor occupational injuries in the construction industry. From these, injuries in general construction and civil engineering were selected (
