BACKGROUND: Sharing information and decisions with children and their parents is critical in pediatric rehabilitation. Although the ethical significance and clinical benefits of sharing decisions are established, approaches for implementing shared decision-making in clinical practice are still developing.
AIM: To explore the ethical challenges of sharing information and decisions with one family in pediatric occupational therapy.
METHOD: We used a single qualitative in-depth interview with an occupational therapist to examine the ethical dimensions of sharing decisions.
RESULTS: We found th

The current study reviews the work being carried out in the Naomi Therapeutic Center in Kiryat Yam, Israel. The staff in this Center decided to provide a holistic response (which includes occupational therapy, speech therapy and art therapy) to 50 elementary school special education students in five booster classes. The goal of the study was to enable these students to improve their self-image, demonstrate fewer classroom adaptive behavioral problems and bring them to function better in class by the end of the school year. Findings demonstrate that in the study group, students' self-image scor

Parents and school administrators commonly ask how long a child is likely to need school-based occupational therapy services. In an effort to provide a statistically supported answer, a record review of 464 cases of students discharged from school-based occupational therapy services in the past 7 years was performed. This review demonstrated that some general statements about service patterns could be determined for this particular caseload. Of note was the significant variability in length of services for students with multiple disabilities as compared to the more discrete length of service p

Child abuse is a major public health concern in the United States, one that has negative consequences on abused persons' productivity and mental health throughout their lives. Occupational therapists who work with preschool-aged children are in a strategic position to screen for physical abuse and aid in the rehabilitation of children and families engaged in abuse. This article provides a review of the literature and accounts of clinical experience with children and families in a variety of settings. It offers an overview of behavioral risk factors that have been shown to correlate with physic

This article discusses some of the challenges that occupational therapists working in acute psychiatric inpatient settings commonly face. There is often a lack of sufficient time available for treatment as well as limitations inherent in addressing functional problems in the artificiality of a hospital environment. A theoretical framework is introduced from which the role of occupational therapy and realistic objectives for acute short-term care can be identified. This framework for inpatient occupational therapy practice is based on the concept of activities health, which provides a definitio

Twenty-seven children with learning disabilities associated with perceptual deficits were studied in order to determine what relationship might exist between occupational therapy and physical therapy test scores. Intercorrelations were computed and multivariate models were developed for the occupational therapy test items. Numerous positive relationships were demonstrated between the two groups of test items, consistent with previous clinical and experimental data. One test, however, did not duplicate the other, and both are essential in the evaluation of the learning-disabled child with perce

Following PRISMA-COSMIN 2024 guidelines, this systematic review assessed the quality of evidence for quantitative instruments (OMIs) designed to measure professional reasoning in occupational therapy students and professionals between 2016 and 2025. Thirteen OMIs (~1,500 participants) were identified, revealing a substantial geographical bias toward the Global North. Although 61.5% (n = 8) were classified as Category A (Recommended), only the Evidence-Based Professional Thinking Tool (EIPT) demonstrated a "high" level of certainty of evidence. Critical shortcomings persist: while only one inst

Practitioners need to demonstrate the value of occupational therapy services in achieving effective patient outcomes. To intervene effectively, we must have adequate assessment practices. This study examines variation in occupational therapy assessment practices by facility type, areas addressed, and types of instruments. The study characterizes commonly and frequently used assessment practices in core occupational domains and identifies potential practice gaps related to assessment. A cross-sectional online survey across six domains central to adult occupational therapy practice (activities o

Concussions are prevalent in youth and often contribute to occupational challenges related to postconcussion syndrome within the educational setting. Despite the advancements that have been made in the occupational therapy management of concussion, school-based occupational therapy practitioners are seeking clarity in service delivery because there is no clear framework that guides service provision for postconcussed youth within the educational setting. In this column, we emphasize the role of school-based occupational therapists as an existing source of support within the school structure, d
