Digitally Designed Decompression Device for Treatment of Odontogenic Cysts: Technical Note.

The aim of the work is to describe the technical procedures adopted to realize a custom-made clinical device, designed through a digital workflow, to improve the decompression of odontogenic cysts. After an incisional biopsy to confirm the histologic nature of the osteolytic jaw lesion, a digital impression of the dental arches, obtained by intraoral scanner, and a CBCT of the jaws, were acquired. The STL (Standard tessellation language) and DICOM files were matched and the decompression device was designed by the use of CAD software (Exocad, 3.1). The 3D-printed resin replica was obtained and

Osteoporotic bone marrow defect mimicking odontogenic cysts: report of 2 cases.

Osteoporotic bone marrow defect (OBMD) is an uncommon, localized area of ischemic bone marrow, usually confined to an extraction site in the posterior mandible and occasionally located in other skeletal sites. Most OBMDs are found incidentally and appear as a radiolucent or hypodense lesion with diffuse borders. The objective of this report is to present 2 unusual cases of OBMD as seen on panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomographic scans. The fea¬tured lesions exhibited well-corticated perimeters and resembled a cystic process. Histopathologically, OBMDs contain various stages of

Periapical Cysts Exhibit Multilocular Characteristics Similar to Odontogenic Keratocysts and Ameloblastomas.

The clinical imaging typically presents as a multicystic lesion in the jawbone, which is mostly diagnosed as ameloblastoma, myxoma, or odontogenic keratocyst. Preoperative biopsy is often challenging due to the intraosseous location of these lesions. Consequently, clinicians frequently rely on these characteristic multicystic imaging features to diagnose either ameloblastoma or odontogenic keratocyst, subsequently planning treatments ranging from marginal resection to mandibular segmental osteotomies with concurrent autogenous bone grafting. However, we encountered two cases of multicystic les

YAP Expression is Related to the Aggressive Behavior of Odontogenic Cysts.

Yes-associated protein (YAP) and Ki-67 are known to be involved in cell proliferation. While their overexpression is associated with aggressive behaviors in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), their roles in odontogenic cysts have not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of YAP and Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts.Tissue samples included 12 radicular cysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, 9 odontogenic keratocysts, and 9 normal oral mucosa specimens. Immunohistochemical analysis was conducted both manually and using ImageJ software for compa

PREVALENCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF ODONTOGENIC CYSTS: A 12-YEAR RETROSPECTIVE STUDY.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts, generally classified as inflammatory or developmental, in dental practice are usually identified incidentally, on routine exams and constitute an important aspect of oral and maxillofacial pathology. A few literature sources provide epidemiological data on odontogenic cysts and tumors. However, these findings may help us to better understand such lesions and improve the diagnosis of odontogenic cysts and tumors. The variability of data obtained with other studies can be attributed to various sociodemographic factors. THE AIM: This study was performed to evaluate

EXPRESSION OF ALPHA-SMOOTH MUSCLE ACTIN IN ODONTOGENIC CYSTS AND TUMORS.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts and tumors exhibit different degrees of aggressiveness in their biological behavior. There has been evidence that the presence of myofibroblasts (MFs) at the invasion front promotes tumor invasion. Our study is based on the fact that MFs are important in the biological behavior of odontogenic cysts and tumors. AIM: To assess immunohistochemically expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) of MFs in odontogenic cysts and tumors and correlate this expression to their biological behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The archival tissues collected for 1.5 years were

Trans-nasal endoscopic and intra-oral combined approach for odontogenic cysts.

Maxillary cysts are a common finding in maxillofacial surgery, dentistry and otolaryngology. Treatment is surgical; a traditional approach includes Caldwell-Luc and other intra-oral approaches. In this article, we analyse the outcomes of 9 patients operated on using a combined intra-oral and trans-nasal approach to the aforementioned disease. Although the number of patients is small, the good results of this study suggest that the combined approach might be a reliable treatment option.

Gingival cyst of the adult, lateral periodontal cyst, and botryoid odontogenic cyst: An updated systematic review.

The aim of the present review was to integrate the available data published on gingival cyst of the adult (GCA), lateral periodontal cyst (LPC), and botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) into a comprehensive analysis of their clinical/radiological features. An electronic search was undertaken in July/2017. Eligibility criteria included publications having enough clinical/radiological/histological information to confirm the diagnosis. A total of 146 publications (157 GCAs, 213 LPCs, 96 BOCs) were included. GCA and LPC presented highest prevalence in the sixth/fifth decades; BOC in the sixth/seventh d

Discrimination of parakeratinised odontogenic keratocysts from other odontogenic and non-odontogenic cyst types by expression of a 38kd cell-surface glycoprotein.

We have identified strong expression of a 38-kD cell surface glycoprotein (gp38), a marker of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), in basal and suprabasal epithelial cell membranes of parakeratinised odontogenic keratocysts. In contrast, orthokeratinised cysts and most other odontogenic cyst types, ameloblastomas, normal stratified oral epithelium, cell rests of Malassez and glands of Serres, all proved negative. To our knowledge this is the first histochemical marker to distinguish between these major cyst types. It has obvious uses in the diagnosis of inflamed keratocysts and the separation of amel

Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst Associated With Dentigerous Cyst in a 15-Year-Old Girl.

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare odontogenic cyst with ameloblastic epithelial lining containing clusters of ghost cells. COCs have been described in association with several odontogenic tumors, more commonly odontomas and rarely with dentigerous cyst (DC). In this article, we describe a case of COC associated with DC in a 15-year-old girl, who presented with a swelling on the right middle third of the face, producing facial asymmetry. Panoramic radiography showed a well-circumscribed, corticated, and unilocular radiolucency at the level of the right maxillary sinus, involving 2 une

Differential diagnosis between calcifying odontogenic cyst and adenomatoid odontogenic tumor by computed tomography images.

OBJECTIVES: Calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) and adenomatoid odontogenic tumors (AOT) have similar radiographic findings. We examined the radiographic and computed tomography (CT) images of patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT and identified their characteristic findings. METHODS: The subjects included 12 patients histologically diagnosed with COC or AOT (one female and five males per group), who underwent CT at our hospital between Nov 1998 and Jun 2019. The location of the lesion, impacted tooth, bone expansion, root resorption, tooth migration, calcified body, and presence o

Comprehensive keratin profiling reveals different histopathogenesis of keratocystic odontogenic tumor and orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor is a cystic lesion that behaves more aggressively than other jaw cysts. One of its characteristic histologic features is a parakeratinized uniform layer of lining epithelium. A jaw cyst lined with orthokeratinized epithelium is called an orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst. These keratinized jaw cysts are thought to be separate entities, although their histopathogenesis has not been fully assessed. To better understand these lesions, we performed comprehensive immunohistochemical profiling of the keratin expression of each. Orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts expres
