Physiological demands of off-road vehicle riding.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to characterize the physiological demands of recreational off-road vehicle riding under typical riding conditions using habitual recreational off-road vehicle riders (n = 128). METHODS: Comparisons of the physical demands of off-road vehicle riding were made between vehicle types (all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and off-road motorcycle (ORM)) to the demands of common recreational activities. Habitual riders (ATV = 56, ORM = 72) performed strength assessments before and after a representative trail ride (48 +/- 24.2 min), and ambulatory oxygen consumption

Assessing public opinion regarding potential ATV-related policies.

PROBLEM: States with laws regarding ATV use and safety have lower mortality and injury rates than states with few or no restrictions. Our objective was to assess the attitudes of registered Ohio voters concerning potential legislation regarding ATV use and safety to determine the feasibility of its enactment. METHOD: A statewide telephone survey of 838 registered Ohio voters was conducted and results were weighted by region to accurately represent all Ohio voters. RESULTS: Registered voters were in favor of restricting the use of ATVs by children <16 years (81%), prohibiting passengers on AT

All-terrain vehicle accidents at a level II trauma center in Indiana: an 8-year retrospective review.

This study profiles the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accident victims who were admitted at a level II trauma center. We retrospectively reviewed the trauma registry data for 111 patients who were admitted to the Parkview Hospital Level II Trauma Center following ATV crashes between January 1996 and June 2003. Forty-four percent of the patients were < or =16 years of age, and the average age overall was 22.49 years. Most of the 111 victims were men, and only 18.9% of those injured were wearing helmets. Although they only make up 14% of the driver population, children <16 years of age account for a

Neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities among drivers of all-terrain vehicles--a case series.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether professional drivers of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) with neck pain have a different array of neuromusculoskeletal disorders in the neck and upper extremities than a referent group with neck pain from the general population. It is hypothesized that exposure to shock-type vibration and unfavorable working postures in ATVs have the capacity to cause peripheral nervous lesions. METHODS: This study was based on a case series analyzed according to a case-case comparison design. The study population consisted of 60 male subjects, inclu

Motorized cart driver safety in assisted living.

When a group of residents at a life care facility purchased motorized carts to move around the 350,000-square-foot facility, staff members were faced with the need to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. This article describes a safety assessment procedure developed for cart drivers who lived in the assisted living area of the community. Five performance criteria were selected for the safety assessment: the ability to safely moving into and out of the vehicle, demonstrate safe reaction times, take appropriate evasive action to sudden obstructions in the driver's path, turn the ve

Pediatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) related head injury rates and patterns: A 10-year nationwide analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) carries significant risk of permanent injury and death, disproportionately affecting children. These injuries commonly affect the head and are especially severe among children as they are often unhelmeted and more likely than adults to experience rollover injuries. Many studies examining patients with ATV-related injuries are single-center cohort studies, with few focusing specifically on head injuries. In the present study, we aimed to characterize the annual incidence of ATV-related head injuries between 2012 and 2021, classify and compare

Analysis of factors affecting injury severity for riders or occupants of all-terrain vehicles and golf carts involved in police-reported crashes.

In recent years, the popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the United States (US) has increased, and the number of ATV driver and passenger deaths have also increased substantially in the last few decades. Riders or occupants of ATVs as well as golf carts are particularly vulnerable to injury, not only due to the lack of protection and safety equipment offered by their vehicles, but also the propensity for ejection in the event of a crash. Given the vulnerability of these road users, it's critical to understand factors which may affect injury severity to plan effective countermeasures a

Perception of side rollover hazards in a Pennsylvania rural population while operating an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are unstable on steep and rough terrain, and thus, rollover is the most common accident which can result in a high rate of fatal outcomes, with higher rates for young and male drivers. OBJECTIVE: This paper investigates the ability of rural Pennsylvania ATV drivers to correctly evaluate slopes, and the mean slope angle at which the most and least conservative drivers indicate a beginning of concern of a roll-over. METHOD: The study was conducted using a simulator, a commercial ATV firmly fixed on an hydraulically-lifted platform. As the platform was be

All-terrain vehicle safety in Florida: is legislation really the answer?

Florida is among the nation's leaders in all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries and fatalities. We hypothesized that patients sustaining injuries while in compliance with ATV laws would demonstrate less severe injury patterns and improved outcomes when compared with noncompliant patients. We reviewed patients treated for ATV-related injuries over a 36-month period. We grouped patients according to conformity with Florida statutes and compared demographics, admission status, injuries sustained, and outcome measures. Three hundred seventy-seven patients were treated for ATV-related injuries.

ATV Accidents continue to be a major public health issue in West Virginia.

All-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding continues to be a major public health problem in West Virginia because the state leads the nation in the rate of deaths from ATV incidents and has significantly higher death rates than all five of the bordering states. Annually, there are 24 deaths a year in West Virginia due to ATV accidents and thousands of nonfatal injuries. Sporting events using ATVs such as motocross racing have added to the burden of caring for patients who are injured in recreational activities. We report a case study of 10 patients treated over an 18-hour period in a state trauma center

Upper extremity injury patterns unique to utility terrain off-road vehicles.

OBJECTIVES: Utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), equipped with roll cages and safety harnesses, are increasingly popular recreational vehicles. Unlike all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) which lack these features and have well-documented injury patterns, UTV injury patterns are not represented well in literature. This study aims to characterize these distinct injury patterns and their impact. METHODS: A retrospective chart review from a Level 1 trauma center was conducted, including all UTV- and ATV-related injuries between 2018 and 2022. Statistical analyses utilized Chi-square, t-tests, and Mann-Whitne

Prevalence of roll-over protective structure (ROPS)-equipped tractors on Hispanic-operated farms in the United States.

Roll-over protective structures (ROPS) are known to prevent tractor overturn deaths, but not enough tractors are equipped with them in the United States to reduce the rate of these deaths to levels seen in several European countries. Recent literature has defined the use of ROPS on US farms in general, but little is known about ROPS use on Hispanic farm operations. Data from a national survey for the calendar year 2003 were used to assess the prevalence of ROPS use on Hispanic-operated farms. Farm characteristics previously identified to be associated with low ROPS prevalence rates on other fa

Risk analysis of tractor overturns on catfish farms.

Fatal and nonfatal injuries occur on catfish farms as a result of tractor overturns, but these injuries can be greatly mitigated when a tractor is equipped with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) and seatbelt. This study analyzed the proportion of tractors on catfish farms in Mississippi not equipped with ROPS and the cost of retrofitting those tractors with a ROPS and seatbelt as compared to the expected benefits gained from adding the protection. To determine if farmers have the financial incentive to retrofit older tractors, a net present value framework was used because the expected be
