Survey for Trichomonas gallinae in Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) from the Rolling Plains Ecoregion, Oklahoma and Texas, USA.

Northern Bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have been in decline throughout the southeastern US. Prevalence of Trichomonas gallinae in wild bobwhites is unknown, although T. gallinae caused morbidity and mortality in experimentally infected bobwhites. Many species of Columbidae (pigeons and doves) in Texas are hosts to T. gallinae. Bobwhites potentially may become exposed to this protozoan through supplemental feed or water sources contaminated by columbids infected with T. gallinae. All of 506 bobwhites collected in Oklahoma and Texas, 2011-13, were PCR negative for T. gallinae. These data sugge

A three-year study reveals a strong association between NO2 and COVID-19 in the state of Oklahoma, United States.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been linked to adverse COVID-19 outcomes. However, studies of the US to-date have generally focused on the US as a whole or large cities on the east and west coasts. Few studies have considered the Midwest, and no comprehensive study of the four most common gaseous pollutants has considered Oklahoma. Oklahoma, a fossil fuel-dependent state with a relatively high respiratory disease burden, provides a unique context to evaluate pollutant impacts on COVID-19 case numbers. METHODS: We analyzed county-level COVID-19 case numbers (2020-2022) in Oklahoma in relation to

Prevalence of Neospora caninum Exposure in Wild Pigs (Sus scrofa) from Oklahoma with Implications of Testing Method on Detection.

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite, reported as a leading cause of cattle abortions and reproductive failure worldwide, costing the cattle industry approximately $1.3 billion annually. With wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations estimated at over six million in the United States, contact between wild pigs and livestock is inevitable, mainly because of the widespread geographic co-occurrence of the two species. As a known reservoir for numerous fungal, bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases, wild pigs are of particular importance for human and veterinary health relative to the prevention of i

Seasonality and survival associated with three outbreak seasons of West Nile virus disease in Oklahoma--2003, 2007, and 2012.

West Nile virus (WNV) activity has fluctuated in the south-central United States since its introduction. Seasonal outbreaks are common, with three in Oklahoma during 2003, 2007, and 2012. Morbidity and mortality rates vary during each outbreak. Long-term neurologic sequelae in association with West Nile virus disease (WNVD) are well-described, but limited information is available about delayed mortality among acute WNV infection survivors. A retrospective cohort analysis of all confirmed and probable WNVD cases reported to the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) during 2003, 2007, and 2

Anomalous temporoparietal activity in individuals with a family history of alcoholism: studies from the Oklahoma Family Health Patterns Project.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) are at enhanced risk of developing alcohol or other substance use disorders relative to those with no family history (FH-). Alcoholics and FH+ subjects have greater interference scores on the Stroop color-word task, suggesting these impairments may be a component of the cognitive phenotype of at-risk individuals. METHODS: In this study, we examined whole-brain activations in 24 FH+ and 28 FH- young adults performing the counting Stroop task, a variant of the Stroop task adapted for neuroimaging studies. RESULTS: Across all sub

Relationship of American Indian blood quantum with osteoporosis risk: a cross-sectional study of American Indian women in Oklahoma.

UNLABELLED: Information regarding the prevalence and risk of osteoporosis among American Indian (AI) women is limited. This study showed that with increasing AI blood quantum, the prevalence of osteoporosis at the hip based on BMD T-scores decreased and this appeared to be independent of other risk factors. INTRODUCTION: This study was designed to investigate the effects of AI blood quantum (BQ) on osteoporosis prevalence and risk in a cohort of AI women in Oklahoma. METHODS: Women (n = 301), aged 50 years and older, were recruited to participate in the Oklahoma American Indian Women's Osteo

Use of whole genome sequencing to complement characterisation of a typhoid fever outbreak among a Marshallese community: Oklahoma, 2015.

Typhoid fever is an illness caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi. In developing regions, it affects an estimated 20 million people annually, causing 200 000 deaths. Although uncommon, cases occur in the USA each year, predominantly due to international travel. During February 2015, the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) detected an outbreak of typhoid fever among residents of northwestern Oklahoma. OSDH conducted case-patient interviews to identify the source and symptomatic contacts. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed to characterise the genetic relatedness of isolate

Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and Breastfeeding Outcomes Across Social Determinants of Health in Oklahoma, USA: A Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding improves maternal and infant health, reducing risks of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and infant mortality. Despite national gains in breastfeeding initiation, disparities persist in exclusivity and duration across social determinants of health (SDOH). The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) promotes evidence-based maternity care practices to support breastfeeding, yet its effectiveness across diverse populations remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study examined whether BFHI designation is associated with breastfeeding outcomes including initiation, exclu

Distinct Motives for Tobacco Use Among Rural Versus Urban Residing Sexual Minority Young Adults in Oklahoma and Surrounding States.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority young adults (SMYAs) report higher rates of tobacco use compared to heterosexual YAs, with emerging evidence suggesting that rural-residing SMYAs may be particularly at-risk. However, little is known about whether tobacco use motives differ by geographic residence and how they relate to tobacco use outcomes among SMYAs. METHODS: We analyzed 2 waves of survey data among 549 SMYAs (ages 18-25; 67.4% female) residing in Oklahoma and surrounding states. Multivariable linear and logistic regressions examined associations of: (1) rural-urban residence (based on residen

Seroprevalence, DNA isolation, and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii from black bear (Ursus americanus) sera collected in Eastern Oklahoma.

Black bears (Ursus americanus) are commonly exposed to Toxoplasma gondii. However, there are no reports of exposure or infection with T. gondii in black bears from Oklahoma. The purpose of our project was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies in black bears collected in Oklahoma. Additionally, since only serum was available from these bears, we sought to determine if DNA extraction and PCR amplification for T. gondii was possible on serum samples from bears with positive titers. Seroprevalence was determined using modified agglutination test (MAT). Serum was collected from 44
