Treatment of recurrent prostate cancer following radical prostatectomy: the radiation-oncologists point of view.

Recurrence of prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy is a common event. Salvage radiation therapy (RT) is the mainstay of treatment in cases with recurrence defined as PSA failure, offering the chance of cure. Multiple studies showed that the lower the PSA level at the beginning of salvage RT, the better the treatment outcome. There is evidence that higher radiation doses are associated with improved PSA relapse free rates. Four different recurrence patterns exist: 1) local recurrence in the prostatectomy bed only; 2) loco-regional metastases in the pelvic lymph nodes; 3) distant metastas

Benefit from preoperative radiotherapy in rectal cancer treatment: disease-free patients' and oncologists' preferences.

Preoperative radiotherapy (PRT) in resectable rectal cancer improves local control but increases probability of faecal incontinence and sexual dysfunction. Consensus was reached in 2001 in the Netherlands on a guideline advising PRT to new patients. Purpose was to assess at what benefit oncologists and rectal cancer patients prefer PRT followed by surgery to surgery alone, and how oncologists and patients value various treatment outcomes. Sixty-six disease-free patients and 60 oncologists (surgical, radiation, medical) were interviewed. Minimally desired benefit from PRT (local control) was as

Language of Hope in Conversations between Pediatric Oncologists, Children with Advanced Cancer, and their Families.

Purpose : Hope is a key driver of coping and decision-making for children with cancer and their families. Prior studies have shown that hope is bolstered, not fractured, by high-quality prognostic communication. However, clinicians describe a tension between conveying hope and honestly discussing poor prognosis. This prospective longitudinal observational study aimed to identify and characterize communication approaches used by oncologists and parents to navigate hope in the context of poor prognosis. Methods : Serial conversations between pediatric patients with poor-prognosis brain tumors, t

Oncologist and General Practitioner Perspectives of Telehealth-Delivered Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Care.

BACKGROUND: Telehealth for follow-up of survivors of colorectal cancer (CRC) represents an opportunity to reduce health resource use and provide flexibility for patients and healthcare providers (HCPs). Understanding the perspectives of HCPs who have delivered telehealth-based CRC survivorship care is critical in determining whether this is an acceptable and appropriate model. AIMS: To examine the experiences of oncologists and general practitioners (GPs) who provided telehealth for CRC survivors within the Shared Care for Colorectal Cancer (SCORE) trial, focusing on implementation outcomes a

Estrogen therapy in patients with gynecologic cancer: a survey of gynecologists and oncologists in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: Endometrial cancer (EC) and epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) affect women of all ages, and the incidence of endometrial cancer in premenopausal women is rising. Menopause can be detrimental to longevity and quality of life, but evidence suggests estrogen therapy (ET) is safe in these patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practice patterns of gynecologists and gynecologic oncologists (GYO) in the United States in regards to prescription of ET to gynecologic cancer patients. It was hypothesized that ET is underused in this population. METHODS: In 2024, a web-based su

Treatment of parotid gland oncocytoma: a case report from a radiation oncologist's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Parotid oncocytoma is a rare benign neoplasm for which surgical excision remains the standard treatment. Although the recurrence rate is generally low, it increases significantly in cases with multifocal lesions or incomplete surgical excision. In such scenarios, postoperative radiotherapy (RT) has been shown to improve local control, reduce recurrence rates, and minimize the need for reoperation. This report presents a representative case of parotid oncocytoma, with a focused discussion on therapeutic decision-making from a radiation oncologist's perspective. CASE REPORT: We repo

You Are Already Trained for This: The Hematologist/Oncologist's Role in Radiation Mass Casualty Response.

A large-scale radiation injury or nuclear incident requires an immediate, coordinated medical response that vastly exceeds traditional disaster management frameworks. While specialized networks exist, the initial surge of casualties will inevitably place a heavy burden on regional healthcare systems. Hematologists and oncologists possess the core clinical competencies necessary to manage the hematologic complications of acute radiation syndrome (ARS), yet barriers to active engagement persist. This manuscript reviews current operational strategies for disaster readiness, emphasizing the utiliz

The Role of General Practitioners in Actinic Keratosis Management in Europe: A Dermato-Oncologists Initiative.

Background/Objectives: Actinic keratosis (AK) is the key precursor of invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). Rising incidence, ageing populations, and limited dermatologists' availability, particularly in rural and underserved regions, underscore the need for more inclusive care pathways. As in other common diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, general practitioners (GPs) could play a pivotal role in improving access, early recognition, and management of AK, provided that systemic barriers are addressed. Methods: This article synthesises current evidence and expert insights fr

[Oncologist's perspective from sentinel node biopsy of melanoma - three decades of experience].

Sentinel lymph node biopsy was the first procedure to become the standard of care in the surgical treatment of melanoma patients, serving as a key procedure for determining the pathological stage of the disease. Thirty years ago, at the Albert Szent-Györgyi Clinical Center of the University of Szeged, we were among the pioneers in introducing sentinel lymph node biopsy for patients with melanoma in Hungary. In this publication, we summarize our experience gained during the treatment of two and a half thousand melanoma patients, based on our previously published reports on the subject. Our data

Choice of oncologist and influencing factors: analysis of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network registry.

Choice of oncologist by patients with pancreatic cancer is a complex personal decision. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network registry to explore whether age, gender, disease status, feelings of trust and comfort, and the opportunity for clinical trial participation influenced patient choice. Of 110 participants who completed the "Information about Choosing an Oncologist Survey," 68 (61.8%) reported visiting another oncologist. Feeling comfortable and trusting their first oncologist decreased the likelihood of seeking a second opinion (OR: 0.08; CI: 0.01

Experience with the implementation of central venous catheters by medical oncologists in a non-surgical setting.

Totally implantable central venous catheters (CVCs) are widely used in the management of patients with malignant diseases. Conventionally, port implantations were carried out by general surgeons and vascular radiologists. In recent years, the medical staff of the Medical Oncology department at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA) has developed a simplified methodology for the routine implantation of these devices. The aim of this study was to review our experience of CVCs and analyze the outcomes regarding catheter duration, complications, and cost comparison with respect to conv

Nutrition in HNSCC: is it a matter for oncologists? The role of multidisciplinary team-a narrative literature review.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition, defined as weight loss and unsatisfactory nutrient intake, is very common in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in either the early or palliative setting. Despite increased awareness, nutritional programs are not yet adequately implemented in these patients. There are several reasons for this delay: differences in composition, the expertise of the multidisciplinary teams involved in HNSCC patients' treatment, and economic and network resources conditioning faster or slower nutritional supply delivery. This situation affects the outcomes and th

Oncologist approaches to communicating uncertain disease status in pediatric cancer: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with cancer and their caregivers desire honest, clear prognostic communication, yet oncologists often disclose prognosis inconsistently. Prognostic communication becomes even more challenging when disease progression is unclear or equivocal. Presently, oncologist approaches for discussing uncertain disease findings are poorly understood. METHODS: In this prospective, longitudinal study, we audio-recorded serial disease reevaluation conversations between children with high-risk cancer, their families, and their primary oncologists over 24 months and conducted content

Discussing Sexual Health in the Medical Oncologist's Practice: Exploring Current Practice and Challenges.

Sexuality is a significant quality-of-life concern for many cancer patients. Patients may be disadvantaged if they are not informed and not offered sexual health care. We sought to reveal oncologists' current practice and opinions concerning sexual counselling. The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitude and practice patterns of Dutch medical oncologists regarding treatment-related sexual dysfunction. Questionnaires were sent to 433 members of the Dutch Society of Medical Oncology. The majority (81.5%) of the 120 responding medical oncologists (response rate 30.6%) stated they

A Survey of Oncologists' Perceptions and Opinions Regarding the Use of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factors.

The purpose of the study is to describe oncologists' perceptions and opinions about patient eligibility, guidelines, and barriers for use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), overall and stratified by their affiliation with the Oncology Care Model (OCM). In May 2018, we invited and recruited practicing US oncologists from a national database for an online survey. Level of agreement was identified using a seven-point scale, ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Of 200 participating oncologists, 70 were OCM-affiliated. Overall, 65% of oncologists agreed or strongly agree
