Leptospirosis is a quintessential one health disease of humans and animals caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Intra- and interspecies transmission is dependent on 1) reservoir host animals in which organisms replicate and are shed in urine over long periods of time, 2) the persistence of spirochetes in the environment, and 3) subsequent human-animal-environmental interactions. The combination of increased flooding events due to climate change, changes in human-animal-environmental interactions as a result of the pandemic that favor a rise in the incidence of leptospirosi

Working the One health strategy in developing countries is a challenge, due to structural weaknesses or deprivation of financial, human, and material resources. Brazil has policies and programs that would allow continuous and systematic monitoring of human, animal, and environmental health, recommending strategies for control and prevention. For animals, there are components of the Epidemiological Surveillance of zoonosis and Animal Health Programs. To guarantee food safety, there are Health Surveillance services and support of the Agropecuary Defense in the inspection of these products, produ

OBJECTIVES/PURPOSE: The costs attributable to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remain theoretical and largely unspecified. Current figures fail to capture the full health and economic burden caused by AMR across human, animal, and environmental health; historically many studies have considered only direct costs associated with human infection from a hospital perspective, primarily from high-income countries. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance Platform for ONE-Burden Estimates (GAP-ON€) network has developed a framework to help guide AMR costing exercises in any part of the world as a first step

A One Health approach was developed in the province of Manitoba in 2014 to manage human and domestic animal exposures to rabies. Manitoba Rabies Central is a collaboration of 3 provincial departments responsible for animal, human, and environmental health. Since the inception of the program 537 samples from animals suspected of rabies and causing an exposure to a human or domestic animal have been evaluated with 11.3% testing positive, 85.7% testing negative, and 3.0% being unfit for testing. Most of the positive rabies test results came from skunks (52.0%), which accounted for 12.5% of submis

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent findings regarding the control and treatment of campylobacteriosis.
RECENT FINDINGS: The application of improved diagnostics has led to an upward shift in the attributable burden of Campylobacter infections, in both the United States and Europe as well as in resource-poor settings. Increased focus has brought a fundamental feature of campylobacteriosis -- the ability to cause relapsing disease back into focus, and expanding data on antimicrobial resistance has lead from a switch in first-line therapy for severe diarrhea from quinolones to azithromycin in mo

Brucellosis, also known as "undulant fever" or "Malta fever", is a zoonotic infection caused by microorganisms belonging to Brucella, a genus of gram-negative coccobacilli that behave as facultative intracellular pathogens of ruminants, swine and other animals. Brucellosis is a threat to public health, hence identifying the optimal way of preventing disease spread is important. Under certain circumstances, integrated, multidisciplinary "One Health" (OH) initiatives provide added value compared to unidisciplinary or conventional health initiatives. Conceptualizing and conducting evaluations of

The development of the One World, One Health agenda coincides in time with the appearance of a different model for the management of human-animal relations: the genetic manipulation of animal species in order to curtail their ability as carriers of human pathogens. In this paper we examine two examples of this emergent transgenic approach to disease control: the development of transgenic chickens incapable of shedding avian flu viruses, and the creation of transgenic mosquitoes refractory to dengue or malaria infection. Our analysis elaborates three distinctions between the One World, One Heal

The idea of "Comparative Medicine" was founded by distinguished scientists in the 1900s, in which context the name of Rudolf Ludwig Carl Virchow always comes into the limelight. This discipline was practiced thoroughly with the study of every infective disease transmitted naturally from vertebrates to man, namely the zoonoses. The following article will highlight the concept of "Comparative Medicine" with the example of tuberculosis research carried out during the second half of the 19th century. After the discipline took an interesting turn toward increasing specialization in the field, parti

Leishmaniasis is among the most neglected tropical diseases in Yemen, where both cutaneous and visceral clinical forms represent a public health challenge. Leishmania tropica is the main cause of cutaneous leishmaniasis, whereas L. donovani and L. infantum cause visceral leishmaniasis in the country. Although leishmaniasis has been recognized for decades, its actual burden in Yemen remains poorly defined, largely due to weak surveillance, constraints in diagnostic services, and the lack of a national control program. Conflict-related disruptions in healthcare, poverty, poor housing, and malnut

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) remains one of the most neglected public-health challenges in the Horn of Africa. This editorial highlights the ecological, social, and political determinants driving VL persistence across the Somali Peninsula, including Somalia, the Somali Region of Ethiopia, and northeastern Kenya. It synthesises evidence on vector ecology, diagnostic and treatment gaps, and the humanitarian dimensions of disease vulnerability, arguing for a One Health, primary-care-anchored approach to prevention and control. The paper calls for renewed national commitment, regional coordination,

BACKGROUND: Cholera continues to pose a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, where rapid urbanization, inadequate sanitation, and climatic variability converge to heighten vulnerability. This study reviews recent cholera outbreaks in Lagos through a One Health perspective, emphasizing their implications, intersectoral drivers, and existing response gaps.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using 48 articles published between 2013 and 2024, retrieved from PubMed, Google Scholar, and official sources such as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Nipah virus (NiV) causes a severe neurological disease in humans. The first NiV outbreak, in Malaysia, involved pig-to-human transmission, that resulted in significant economic losses to the local pig industry. Despite the risk NiV poses to pig-dense regions, no licensed vaccines exist. This study therefore assessed three NiV vaccine candidates in pigs: (1) adjuvanted soluble NiV (s)G protein, (2) adjuvanted pre-fusion stabilised NiV (mcs)F protein, and (3) adenoviral vectored NiV G (ChAdOx1 NiV G). NiV sG induced the strongest neutralising antibody response, NiV mcsF induced antibodies best a

The COVID-19 pandemic is a devastating reminder that mitigating the threat of emerging zoonotic outbreaks relies on our collective capacity to work across human health, animal health and environment sectors. Despite the critical need for shared approaches, collaborative benchmarks in the International Health Regulations (IHR) Monitoring and Evaluation Framework and more specifically the Joint External Evaluation (JEE) often reveal low levels of performance in collaborative technical areas (TAs), thus identifying a real need to work on the human-animal-environment interface to improve health se

Nigeria, with a population of over 190 million people, is rated among the 10 countries with the highest burden of infectious and zoonotic diseases globally. In Nigeria, there exist a sub-optimal surveillance system to monitor and track priority zoonoses. We therefore conducted a prioritization of zoonotic diseases for the first time in Nigeria to guide prevention and control efforts. Towards this, a two-day in-country consultative meeting involving experts from the human, animal, and environmental health backgrounds prioritized zoonotic diseases using a modified semi-quantitative One Health Zo

The growing burden of fungal diseases on human, animal, plant, and environmental health is a serious global problem that requires a "One Health" approach beyond disciplinary silos. Fungal diseases are often neglected, yet their prevalence and importance are increasing at an alarming rate. Complex interactions among different host organisms, coupled with human activities, anthropogenic environmental impacts, climate change, globalization, and antifungal drug use, particularly in agriculture, are significant contributing factors. The emergence and spread of resistance to existing antifungal agen

Background/Objectives: Breastfeeding represents a critical developmental window during which maternal biology, environmental exposures, and nutrition converge to influence infant gastrointestinal health and long-term developmental trajectories. From a One Health perspective, breastfeeding can be conceptualized not as a static nutritional act, but as a dynamic and modifiable biological system in which maternal factors shape early-life microbiota assembly and immune programming. This narrative review explores how microbiota-oriented strategies during breastfeeding may foster a favorable trajecto

The One Health framework, which recognizes the interdependence of human, animal, and ecosystem health, has gained considerable momentum in global health policy. However, its full potential to address health inequities remains underexplored. Environmental justice (EJ), defined by the US EPA as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, culture, national origin, income, and educational levels with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of protective environmental laws, regulations, and policies, constitutes a natural and necessary

Colistin, a polymyxin antibiotic considered a last-line treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, has been widely used in livestock, promoting resistance in bacterial populations that can disseminate through the environment. Although rarely used in companion animals, dogs and cats can acquire and spread colistin-resistant strains through shared environments, acting as potential reservoirs of resistance. Reliable detection of resistant strains remains challenging due to technical limitations of routine susceptibility tests. Despite these constraints, epidemiological studies de
