Home traction in the management of congenital dislocation of the hip.

A form of axial fraction has been devised for the premanipulative management of a child with congenital dislocation of the hip. This set-up makes it possible to maintain a child in his own home while gently pulling the head of the femur down to the level of the acetabulum. Home traction has proven to be a simple, extremely safe method of management of congenital dislocation of the hip, with an exceptionally low incidence of avascular necrosis. It requires only that adequate instruction and supervision are available to the family. It helps to reduce the stress on the child inherent with hospita

[The mother and her sick newborn (author's transl)].

The care of the mother during the pre- and postnatal period is of great importance not only for the act of birth but also for the establishment of the mother child relationship. There are indications that the quality of mothering during later childhood is determined by the way the mother child relations are established during the first days of life. It is important to realise the needs of the mother to see and to touch her child and to enable her to do so as often as possible even if this child is under special care. In cases of neonatal illness the mother especially needs the psychological he

Innocent murmurs: parental viewpoint, what are the most common misconceptions and how to avoid them.

The aim of this study was to investigate the parental reaction after they have been informed that their child has a heart murmur. This study also explored whether their reaction was influenced by the fact that the heart murmur is innocent, which actually means that the child is healthy. One hundred parents participated in this cross-sectional study. According to the statistical results, minor parent concern was notable after cardiologist's examination and consulting. Whereas before the cardiologist's examination 98% of parents were concerned about their child's health, later, less than half of

The impact of preschool child and maternal attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms on mothers' perceived chronic stress and hair cortisol.

Providing care for a child with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with parenting stress. Moreover, adults with elevated ADHD symptoms report increased perceived stress. Despite this, it has rarely been examined whether and how child and maternal ADHD symptoms may affect maternal perceived stress and the stress-sensitive hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This study therefore investigated the possible impact of child and maternal ADHD symptoms on mothers' perceived chronic stress and hair cortisol concentration (HCC), while simultaneously considering the effects of

A Path Analysis Revealing Influential Factors of Weight Loss Willingness and Behaviour in 8-15 Years Overweight Children: A Cross-Sectional Investigation.

PURPOSE: To explore the association between parental and child correct cognitions of the child's weight and child weight loss willingness and behaviours. METHODS: Data from the 2007-2020 NHANES database were used, focusing on overweight children aged 8-15 years with age- and sex-specific BMI ≥ the 85th percentile. Both parental and child correct cognitions of the child's weight were assessed by comparing subjective questionnaires with objective BMI measurements. Multivariable logistic regression was conducted. Path analysis was employed to confirm the effect of child correct cognition on the

Nonoffending Caregiver Support After Child Sexual Abuse: Essentials for the Forensic Nurse.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a pediatric health problem of epidemic proportions. CSA can result in significant lifelong physical and mental health consequences. A disclosure of CSA affects not only the child but also everyone close to the child. Nonoffending caregiver support after a disclosure of CSA is key to optimal victim functioning. Forensic nurses play an integral role in the care of CSA victims and are uniquely positioned to ensure best outcomes for both child victims and their nonoffending caregivers. In this article the concept of nonoffending caregiver support is explored, and = impl

Soft is hardest: leading for learning in child protection services following a child fatality.

The way in which a child protection agency responds to a child fatality always has a strong influence on subsequent practice. Very often, organizational responses and child death reviews are punitive and escalate an already anxious and defensive organizational culture. This paper outlines an alternative approach that not only helps staff to manage their emotional responses but also encourages and prioritizes a learning culture within the organization throughout the crisis and in the longer-term.

Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of dentists regarding child physical abuse in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

A large proportion of child physical abuse cases go undocumented and unreported. Dentists can play an important role in identifying and reporting these cases, but little has been reported about this issue in Saudi Arabia. The aims of the study were to (1) assess dentists' knowledge of child physical abuse, (2) assess dentists' attitudes towards child physical abuse, and (3) assess the behaviors of dentists in identifying and reporting child physical abuse. A cross-sectional survey of pediatric dentists, pediatric dentistry residents, and dental interns practicing at all of the dental schools i

Understanding Online Child Sexual Exploitation Offenses.

In the past three decades, there has been an exponential increase in the worldwide availability of Internet access and devices that are able to access online materials. This literature review investigated whether increased accessibility of Internet child pornography (CP) increases the risk of in-person child sexual exploitation. The current review found little to no evidence that availability of the Internet has increased the worldwide incidence or prevalence of in-person child sexual abuse. In fact, during the time period in which the Internet has flourished, international crime statistics ha

A multi-method evaluation of parent and child factors associated with child abuse potential across valid and invalid profiles on the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory.

Child abuse is a pervasive problem impacting millions of children. Researchers largely rely on parent-report questionnaires to examine risk for child abuse, leaving a gap in research concerning the link between observed parent and child behaviors and child abuse potential. The current study pursued a multi-method approach to explore relations between parent and child factors and child abuse potential (via the Brief Child Abuse Potential Inventory; BCAP) in a sample of 84 referred for behavioral problems in Australia. About half of the sample engaged in socially desirable responding which resul

Child abuse and physical health: A population-based study on physical health complaints among adolescents and young adults.

Aims: To investigate whether adolescents and young adults with a history of child abuse had more physical health complaints compared to their unexposed peers. We also aimed to estimate associations between different child abuse types with physical health complaints and associations between the number of child abuse types and physical health complaints. Methods: This population-based telephone survey over two waves included 506 adolescents and young adults exposed to child abuse and 504 non-abused peers aged 16-33 years. We applied linear regression analyses to investigate associations between

Correlates of child abuse potential among African American and latina mothers: A developmental-ecological perspective.

The child victimization rate in the US has rapidly grown over the past five years. Today, nine out of every 1000 children are victims of some type of child maltreatment, and lifetime costs of child victimization exceed $100 billion per year. Effective policies promoting fairness and child safety must target the most salient indicators of child maltreatment. In this study, we examined three groups of risk factors for child abuse potential with the goal of identifying the most prominent indicators in a sample of 170 African-American and Latina mothers. Specifically, we analyzed the effect of soc

Interrupting the Link Between Temperamental risk, Adverse Parenting Practices, and Externalizing Problems in School-Aged Children: The Role of Teacher-Child Relationships.

This study examined how adverse parenting practices mediate the relationship between child temperament and later externalizing problems, and whether the teacher-child relationship moderates these associations. Data on child temperament, parenting practices, child externalizing problems (parent-reported), and teacher-child relationship (teacher-reported) were collected over three years (mean ages 8.40 to 11.29) among 434 children (44.7% girls) with early-onset externalizing problems. Results from structural equation modeling revealed that parental hostility mediated associations between tempera

Women survivors of child abuse - don't ask, don't tell.

BACKGROUND: Rates of disclosure of child abuse by women survivors are low, and general practitioners seldom ask women about such history. This study explored the experiences of women survivors: child abuse disclosure, GP service use and thoughts on being asked about their abuse experiences. METHODS: A cross-sectional study containing quantitative and qualitative questions was conducted with 108 women child abuse survivors. RESULTS: Only 5% of the women disclosed their child abuse to their GP and 19% were asked about their child abuse history. More than half of the women (58%) asked reported

[Attitudes to and knowledge of contraindications against measles, mumps and rubella vaccination. (MFR-vaccination) among general practitioners].

A questionnaire investigation among general practitioners revealed that 29% of these were less positive about vaccination for measles, mumps and German measles (MFR vaccination) than for the remainder of the vaccination programme for children. Knowledge about contraindications for MFR vaccination was incomplete. Thus, only 26% of the general practitioners would advise vaccination if the parents stated that the child was hypersensitive to eggs. Only 70-80% of the general practitioners would advise vaccination if the child had cystic fibrosis, hydrocephalus, ventricle septum defect or had a cold
