An autoradiographic study of midbrain-diencephalic projections to the inferior olivary nucleus in the opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Techniques of intra-axonal transport were utlizied to elucidate the organization of diencephalic and midbrain projections to the inferior olivary nucleus of the Virginia opossum. Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected into the olive suggests that terminals within it arise from the subparafascicular nucleus of the caudal thalamus, the nucleus of Darkschewitsch, the fields of Forel, the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, the periaqueductal grey, the caudal pretectal nucleus, the tegmentum dorsomedial to the red nucleus, the red nucleus (minimal), the nucleus linearis, as well as the

Assessment of Trypanosoma cruzi Infection Status in White-Eared Opossums (Didelphis albiventris) of the Metropolitan Area of Mendoza, Argentina.

Marsupials of the genus Didelphis are important wild hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. They exhibit infection patterns influenced by parasite lineage, as well as distinctive immune responses. We herein assessed the infection status of white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) in the Metropolitan Area of Mendoza (MAM), Argentina, by integrating parasitologic data and serologic responses to T. cruzi antigens (crude homogenates and recombinant proteins) with physiologic and ecologic parameters of the animals. We captured 33 opossums between 2018 and 2021. High

Lesions caused by Sarcocystis spp., parasites of opossums (Didelphis aurita), in acute and chronic infections in birds (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Protozoa of the genus Sarcocystis are obligatory heterogenous parasites with both definitive and intermediate hosts. Opossums (Didelphis aurita) can shed multiple species of Sarcocystis with birds as the intermediate host. The pathologies of Sarcocystis species in birds have not been thoroughly elucidated. Therefore, the aim of the present study to determine the main lesions that can occur in acute and chronic infections in intermediate hosts, when they ingest infective sporocysts that are shed in the opossum's feces, using budgerigars as a model. To this end, 12 budgerigars, Melopsittacus und

Gleasonian structure in the helminth metacommunity of the opossum Didelphis albiventris in two extremes of the Atlantic Forest.

Didelphis albiventris is the opossum with the largest geographic distribution in Brazil and has a wide spectrum of helminth parasites. This study aimed to describe the species composition and analyse the structure of helminth communities of D. albiventris in two extremes of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The influence of host sex, body mass, age, helminth species richness and locality on the abundance and prevalence of the most prevalent helminth species was investigated. Ninety-five per cent of the animals were infected with at least one species. Nine helminth species were found: the nematode

PULMONARY LESIONS CAUSED BY THE LUNGWORM (DIDELPHOSTRONGYLUS HAYESI) IN THE OPOSSUM (DIDELPHIS VIRGINIANA) IN COLIMA, MEXICO.

Didelphostrongylus hayesi is an important and prevalent pulmonary nematode in the opossum ( Didelphis virginiana ). An in-depth description of the pulmonary lesions caused by this nematode is lacking. The objective of this investigation was to make a detailed account of the gross, subgross, and microscopic changes that occur in the lungs of opossums naturally infected with D. hayesi. Forty-four opossums trapped in the state of Colima, Mexico, were euthanized by an overdose of barbiturates. Following a postmortem examination, the right lung was cut from the main bronchi and placed in a Petri di

Microscopic anatomy of the lower respiratory tract of the grey short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica).

The respiratory tracts of seven grey short-tailed opossums were histologically examined. Six opossums were prepared by perfusion with buffered formalin. Opossum seven was perfused with gluteraldehyde. Samples taken from the respiratory passages and lungs of specimens 1-6 were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. A mixture of methylene and azure blue was used for specimen 7. The trachea and right and left principal bronchi are lined with a pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with occasional goblet cells. The secondary and tertiary bronchi and the primary and secondary bronchioles are

Characterization of metastatic intestinal adenocarcinoma with differentiation into multiple morphologic cell types in a Virginia opossum.

A captively maintained mature male opossum (Didelphis virginiana) utilized in a research protocol was presented with clinical signs of chronic diarrhea and severe muscle wasting. At necropsy, there was multifocal mural gastric, intestinal, and urinary bladder thickening, concurrent bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis, and extensive fibrous abdominal adhesions. Histologic evaluation revealed intestinal adenocarcinoma with coelomic metastasis to the stomach and urinary bladder. The adenocarcinoma was evaluated using histochemistry and electron microscopy. Paneth, enteroendocrine, and goblet

Role of altered responsiveness of hypertrophic smooth muscle in manometric abnormalities of the obstructed opossum oesophagus.

The movements of the obstructed oesophagus are abnormal, but whether this relates to the disease causing the obstruction, to the altered load conditions or to abnormal neuromuscular functions in hypertrophic smooth muscle is unclear. In an opossum model of chronic oesophageal obstruction, we compared the mechanical responsiveness of hypertrophic smooth muscle in vitro to in vivo manometric function. Related to their greater thickness, strips of hypertrophic muscle generated greater force in response to electrical stimulation and to stretch than control strips. Hypertrophic muscle often generat

Isolation from opossum serum of a metalloproteinase inhibitor homologous to human alpha 1B-glycoprotein.

Fractionation of opossum (Didelphis virginiana) serum with (NH4)2SO4, followed by chromatography on DEAE-Sepharose, phenyl-Sepharose, and Mono Q HR 5/5, has resulted in the isolation in homogeneous condition of a metalloproteinase inhibitor designated oprin (opossum proteinase inhibitor). Oprin is a single-chain glycoprotein (26% carbohydrate) with an estimated Mr = 52,000, pI = 3.5, and E(1%/1 cm) = 11. Oprin inhibited snake venom metalloproteinases, but showed no activity on venom serine proteinases or on bacterial metalloproteinases. Incubation of Crotalus atrox alpha-proteinase (EC 3.4.24.

The pretectal complex in the opossum: projections from the striate cortex and correlation with retinal terminal fields.

Two terminal fields were revealed in the pretectal complex of the opossum by the Fink-Heimer method after striate cortical lesions. A rostral field is located within a rostrolateral strip of the compact part of the anterior pretectal nucleus, where a partial topographic arrangement of this projection is present. A caudal field is located within the sub-brachial nucleus of the optic tract, located between the brachium of the superior colliculus and the posterior pretectal nucleus. The corticotopic projection to this field is mirror-symmetric to that found in the superior colliculus and overlaps

Pathological and morphometric characterization of intestinal lesions associated with natural infection by Oligacanthorhynchus microcephalus in white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris).

This retrospective study evaluated 29 free-living white-eared opossums (Didelphis albiventris) necropsied between 2022 and 2025. Among 19 adults, 13 (68.4%) presented intestinal remodeling associated with acanthocephalan (Oligacanthorhynchus microcephalus) attachment. Parasite burden was determined by counting attached individuals per animal, providing a measure of infection level. Macroscopically, firm nodules (3-11 mm) were observed, mainly in the jejunum, accompanied by luminal dilation and thinning of the intestinal wall. Histologically, the nodules involved mucosa, muscularis, and serosa,

History, Rats, Fleas, and Opossums. II. The Decline and Resurgence of Flea-Borne Typhus in the United States, 1945-2019.

Flea-borne typhus, due to Rickettsia typhi and R. felis, is an infection causing fever, headache, rash, and diverse organ manifestations that can result in critical illness or death. This is the second part of a two-part series describing the rise, decline, and resurgence of flea-borne typhus (FBT) in the United States over the last century. These studies illustrate the influence of historical events, social conditions, technology, and public health interventions on the prevalence of a vector-borne disease. Flea-borne typhus was an emerging disease, primarily in the Southern USA and California

Morphometric analysis of the postnatally developing marsupial lung: the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica).

The postnatal lung development of the gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) was investigated to assess the morphofunctional status in this immature born marsupial. Lung volume, surface densities and surface areas, parenchymal (air spaces and septa) and non-parenchymal (airways, blood vessels, connective tissue) volume proportions were determined in Micro-CT images using morphometry. The lung of the neonate was at the canalicular stage and consisted of large terminal air spaces and a rudimentary bronchial tree. The absolute lung volume was only 0.002 cm3 with an air space surface de

Evolutionary innovations in germline biology of placental mammals identified by transcriptomics of first-wave spermatogenesis in opossum.

Mammalian spermatogenesis is a highly stereotyped and conserved developmental process that is essential for fitness. At the same time, gene expression in spermatogenic cells is rapidly evolving. This combination of features has been suggested to drive rapid fixation of new gene expression patterns. Using a high-resolution dataset comprising bulk and single-cell data from juvenile and adult testes of the opossum Monodelphis domestica, a model marsupial, we define the developmental timing of the spermatogenic first wave in opossum and delineate conserved and divergent gene expression programs ac

Comparative Analyses Reveal Conserved and Modified Steps in the Testis Descent and Scrotum Development in Mouse and Opossum.

INTRODUCTION: In many mammals, the testes descend from its abdominal position on the mesonephric kidney and are housed in the scrotum. It has been speculated that metatherians and eutherians might have acquired the scrotal testis independently because metatherians have the scrotum cranially to the phallus, while eutherians, such as humans and mice, possess it caudally. Rather, recent studies based on sequence comparisons of testis-descent-related genes indicate that the metatherian-eutherian common ancestor might already possess the descent mechanisms. To further elucidate the path of scrotal
