Visual dysfunction in retinal and optic nerve disease.

Visual perceptions seen with retinal and optic nerve disease may overlap with those resulting from retrochiasmal disorders. A few disorders typically present with distinctive perceptions, but the majority have less specific symptoms. Features include whether or not the visual phenomena are negative or positive, monocular or binocular, and the location and form of any deficits. Among negative phenomena, transient visual loss usually is the result of ischemic disease, but particular precipitants may suggest demyelination or photoreceptor degeneration. The pattern and location of visual field def

Spatial attention is attracted in a sustained fashion toward singular points in the optic flow.

While a single approaching object is known to attract spatial attention, it is unknown how attention is directed when the background looms towards the observer as s/he moves forward in a quasi-stationary environment. In Experiment 1, we used a cued speeded discrimination task to quantify where and how spatial attention is directed towards the target superimposed onto a cloud of moving dots. We found that when the motion was expansive, attention was attracted towards the singular point of the optic flow (the focus of expansion, FOE) in a sustained fashion. The effects were less pronounced when

Object motion continuity and the flash-lag effect.

When a visual object is briefly flashed, it appears to lag behind another moving object (flash-lag effect; FLE). Previous studies showed that a sudden change to the moving object at the time of the flash presentation would eliminate the FLE. We examined whether the FLE would be eliminated when a sudden color change was embedded in a sequence of color alternations on a moving object. Observers viewed a moving disc, the color of which did not change at all, changed only once when another stationary object flashed, or alternated regularly (Experiment 1) or randomly (Experiment 2) between two colo

Contributions of visible persistence and perceptual set to the flash-lag effect: focusing on flash onset abolishes the illusion.

Among other theories, visible persistence has been suggested to explain the flash-lag effect (FLE). According to this account, the flash is not compared to the moving object at its perceived onset, but at a later time while it is still subjectively visible. Therefore, it is reported to lag the moving object. We show that observers' perceptual set determines whether the persisting image of the flash or its onset is used to judge relative position. Spontaneously, observers use the persisting image, such that a flash-lag results. When forced to focus on the onset of the flash because flashes and

Computational analyses for illusory transformations in the optic flow field and heading perception in the presence of moving objects.

When we see a stimulus of a radial flow field (the target flow) overlapped with a lateral flow field or another radial flow field, the focus of expansion (FOE) of the target radial flow appears to be shifted in a direction. Royden and Conti [(2003). A model using MT-like motion-opponent operators explains an illusory transformation in the optic flow field. Vision Research, 43, 2811-2826] argued that local motion subtraction is crucial for explanation of this phenomenon. The flow field which causes the illusory displacement of FOE was computationally analyzed. It was shown that the flow field i

Asymmetry in visual cortical circuits underlying motion-induced perceptual mislocalization.

Motion signals in the visual field can cause strong biases in the perceived positions of stationary objects. Local motion signal within an object induces a shift in the perceived object position in the direction of motion, whereas adaptation to motion stimuli causes a perceptual shift in the opposite direction. The neural mechanisms underlying these illusions are poorly understood. Here we report two novel receptive field (RF) properties in cat primary visual cortex that may account for these motion-position illusions. First, motion signal in a stationary test stimulus causes a displacement of

The effect of tactile and visual sensory inputs on phantom limb awareness.

Multiple sensory stimuli contribute to the conscious awareness of the body. It is well known that limb amputation can result in abnormal body awareness, but the manner in which the CNS constructs and updates a body schema after injury is largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to systematically evaluate the effects of sensory inputs on phantom limb awareness (PLA) shortly after unilateral upper extremity amputation. The location, quality and intensity of spontaneous and tactile-evoked phantom sensations and awareness were assessed in 13 amputees who were referred sequentially for

A role of 3-D surface-from-motion cues in motion-induced blindness.

Motion-induced blindness (MIB), the illusory disappearance of local targets against a moving mask, has been attributed to both low-level stimulus-based effects and high-level processes, involving selection between local and more global stimulus contexts. Prior work shows that MIB is modulated by binocular disparity-based depth-ordering cues. We assessed whether the depth effect is specific to disparity by studying how monocular 3-D surface from motion affects MIB. Monocular kinetic depth cues were used to create a global 3-D hourglass with concave and convex surfaces. MIB increased for station

Neural basis of 3-D shape aftereffects.

We used selective adaptation to identify the neural mechanisms responsible for 3-D shape perception from orientation flows in retinal images [Li, A., & Zaidi, Q. (2000). Perception of three-dimensional shape from texture is based on patterns of oriented energy. Vision Research 40 (2), 217-242)]. Three-dimensional shape adaptation could involve stages from photoreceptors to non-oriented retinal cells, oriented cells in striate cortex, and extra-striate cells that respond to 3-D slants. To psychophysically isolate the relevant stage, we used 3-D adapting stimuli created from real and illusory or

The contribution of videostroboscopy in daily ENT practice.

Videostroboscopy has now left specialized voice laboratories and must be made available to general ENT practice. It is based on an optical illusion giving the impression of slow motion from a series of successive vocal cycles but it is the least awkward system to examine the movement of vocal folds while waiting for the development of very high speed video recordings which would enable to visualize a real single cycle. The equipment comprises a stroboscope, a CCD type of camera, a video recorder, a microphone, a monitor or television screen and rigid optics and/or a fiberscope. An examination

Frequency characteristics of visually induced motion sickness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the frequency response of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) for oscillating linear motion in the fore-and-aft axis. BACKGROUND: Simulators, virtual environments, and commercially available video games that create an illusion of self-motion are often reported to induce the symptoms seen in response to true motion. Often this human response can be the limiting factor in the acceptability and usability of such systems. Whereas motion sickness in physically moving environments is known to peak at an oscillation frequency around 0.2 Hz, it has

What contributes to our perception of the Shepard Tabletop Illusion?

A vertical parallelogram placed next to an identical one but rotated horizontally by 90 degrees gives rise to one of the most powerful geometrical illusions: the Shepard Tabletop Illusion. In this illusion, the two parallelograms, or tabletops, are perceived as having different aspect ratios: the vertical one appears longer and thinner than the horizontal one. Although the exact mechanisms responsible for the illusion remain unclear, it is commonly understood that the brain treats the vertical tabletop as a three-dimensional object receding into the distance, and the horizontal one as an objec

Through the looking-glass: Mirror feedback modulates temporal and spatial aspects of bimanual coordination.

Mirror therapy has become an effective and recommended intervention for a range of conditions affecting the upper limb (e.g. hemiparesis following stroke). However, little is known about how mirror feedback affects the control of bimanual movements (as performed during mirror therapy). In this study, in preparation for future clinical investigations, we examined the kinematics of bimanual circle drawing in unimpaired participants both with (Experiment 1) and without (Experiment 2) a visual template to guide movement. In both experiments, 15 unimpaired right-handed participants performed self-p

Interactions of flicker and motion.

We present a series of novel observations about interactions between flicker and motion that lead to three distinct perceptual effects. We use the term flicker to describe alternating changes in a stimulus' luminance or color (i.e. a circle that flickers from black to white and visa-versa). When objects flicker, three distinct phenomena can be observed: (1) Flicker Induced Motion (FLIM) in which a single, stationary object, appears to move when it flickers at certain rates; (2) Flicker Induced Motion Suppression (FLIMS) in which a moving object appears to be stationary when it flickers at cert

A unified probabilistic model of the perception of three-dimensional structure from optic flow.

Human observers can perceive the three- dimensional (3-D) structure of their environment using various cues, an important one of which is optic flow. The motion of any point's projection on the retina depends both on the point's movement in space and on its distance from the eye. Therefore, retinal motion can be used to extract the 3-D structure of the environment and the shape of objects, in a process known as structure-from-motion (SFM). However, because many combinations of 3-D structure and motion can lead to the same optic flow, SFM is an ill-posed inverse problem. The rigidity hypothesis

Perceptual illusions in eating disorders: rigid and fluctuating styles.

This study investigated perceptual styles in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) using a perceptual set task. We hypothesised that, consistent with personality style research. AN patients might be more rigid in style than those with BN or no eating disorder. We found that once an illusion had been established, participants with AN and BN showed more illusions than non-ED women. However, while AN patients responded rigidly, giving the same response repeatedly, BN patients were more likely to change their responses. The study suggests interesting differences to be followed up in futur

Visual-spatial strength in dyslexia: rapid discrimination of impossible figures.

It has often been conjectured that visual-spatial talents accompany dyslexia. But do individuals with dyslexia have unusual visual-spatial talents? Individuals with dyslexia were compared to controls on two computer-based visual-spatial tasks in two studies. In accordance with a diverging ability hypothesis, it was predicted that the dyslexia group would perform better on a global task, identifying impossible figures, and worse on a feature-oriented task, matching figures. These hypotheses were partially supported. On the global task, the dyslexia group was faster but no more accurate than the

Size-contrast illusions deceive the eye but not the hand.

BACKGROUND: When we reach out to pick up an object, not only do we direct our moving limb towards the location of the object, but the opening between our fingers and thumb is scaled in flight to the object's size. Evidence obtained from patients with neurological disorders has shown that the visual processing underlying the calibration of grip aperture and other movement parameters during grasping is mediated by visual mechanisms located in the cerebral cortex that are quite distinct from those underlying the experiential perception of object size and other object features. Under appropriate c

Adaptation to a spatial offset occurs independently of the flash-drag effect.

Visual motion can influence the perceived position of an object. For example, in the flash-drag effect, the position of a stationary flashed object at one location appears to shift in the direction of motion presented at another location in the visual field (Whitney & Cavanagh, 2000). The results of previous physiological studies suggest interactions between motion and position information in very early retinotopic areas. However, it is unclear whether the position information that has been distorted by motion further influences the visual processing stage at which adaptable position mechanism

A flash-drag effect in random motion reveals involvement of preattentive motion processing.

The flash-drag (FDE) effect refers to the phenomenon in which the position of a stationary flashed object in one location appears shifted in the direction of nearby motion. Over the past decade, it has been debated how bottom-up and top-down processes contribute to this illusion. In this study, we demonstrate that randomly phase-shifting gratings can produce the FDE. In the random motion sequence we used, the FDE inducer (a sinusoidal grating) jumped to a random phase every 125 ms and stood still until the next jump. Because this random sequence could not be tracked attentively, it was impossi
