The one-photon, classical two-photon, and entangled two-photon absorption (1PA, TPA, and ETPA) excitation wavelength-dependent spectra in a series of structurally related cyanine dyes are obtained to probe the role of the intermediate state on their nonlinear and quantum optical properties. The cyanine dye systems are 3,3'-diethyloxacarbocyanine iodide (DOCI) with an oxygen substituent, 1,1'-diethyl-3,3,3',3'-tetramethylindocarbocyanine iodide (DiIC2) with a dimethyl substituent, and 3,3'-diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide (DTCI) with a sulfur substituent. Flexible organic crystals have emerged as promising materials for integrated photonic devices and optical communication systems. However, the output wavelength and intensity of optical signals are typically fixed by the intrinsic molecular structures and crystal packing modes, rendering continuous and reversible modulation of a sole crystal highly challenging. Herein, we design and synthesize a near-infrared flexible organic crystal, in which dual-mode waveguide output modulation of wavelength and intensity is achieved by synergistically exploiting photonic re-absorption and photothermal-drive

Photonic crystal cavities engineered for high-performance terahertz (THz) emission offer a promising route toward compact quantum-photonic platforms. Here, we introduce a hybrid indium phosphide/zinc oxide (InP/ZnO) quantum-dot photonic crystal laser that exploits the wide bandgap of ZnO (≈ 3.37 eV) and its highly scalable nanorod and thin-film growth modes to sustain strongly confined optical states. By systematically analyzing the quality factor under variations in temperature-dependent dispersion and radius-to-lattice constants, we demonstrate a substantial enhancement in spontaneous emissi

Oscillators are at the heart of optical lasers, providing stable, transform-limited pulses. Until now, laser oscillators have been available only in the infrared to visible and near-ultraviolet (UV) spectral region. In this paper, we present a study of an oscillator operating in the 5- to 12-keV photon-energy range. We show that, using the [Formula: see text] line of transition metal compounds as the gain medium, an X-ray free-electron laser as a periodic pump, and a Bragg crystal optical cavity, it is possible to build X-ray oscillators producing intense, fully coherent, transform-limited pul

Photonic crystal slabs (PCS) are a promising platform for optical biosensing. Yet, flexible applications based on PCS for biosensing have been limited, as the mechanical properties influence the optical ones. Here, we show the suppression of the mechanochromism effect for flexible PCS. We obtained flexible photonic crystal slabs by sputtering of a dielectric 100 nm Nb2O5 high refractive index layer onto a flexible nanostructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate with 370 nm grating period. The PCS exhibit a guided mode resonance at around 650 nm. We demonstrate that these flexible photonic

We consider the consequence of having nonreciprocal photon transfer between two surfaces with temperature gradient. We demonstrate that in a system consisting of graphene and a magneto-optical substrate separated by a gap, a transverse electric field is generated in graphene perpendicular to magnetic field and temperature gradient, in analogy to the Nernst effect. Such photon Nernst effect is driven by nonreciprocal Casimir force carried by photons. We show that the thermal efficiency of near-field photon Nernst effect is bounded by the Carnot limit, and nonreciprocal high-k modes are needed f

Photonic skyrmions are topological textures that exhibit remarkable resilience to environmental perturbations and support deeply subwavelength features, making them promising candidates for high-resolution microscopy, optical computing devices and ultrahigh-density information encoding. However, in contrast to free-space optical skyrmions, all existing approaches to generate polaritonic field skyrmions are limited by a lack of dynamic tunability. In general, without engineering the phase of the incident light, both their lattice site diameter and total topological charges remain fixed after fa

A general sonochemical process is reported for the replication of photonic structures from Morpho butterfly wings in several hours. By selecting appropriate precursors, we can achieve exact replications of photonic structures in a variety of transparent metal oxides, such as titania, tin oxide and silica. The exact replications at the micro- and nanoscales were characterized by a combination of FE-SEM, TEM, EDX and Raman measurements. The optical properties of the replicas were investigated by using reflectance spectroscopy, and it was found that the interesting chromaticity of the reflected l

Simultaneous manipulation of multiple degrees of freedom of light lies at the heart of photonics. Nonlinear wavefront shaping offers an exceptional way to achieve this goal by converting incident light into beams of new frequencies with spatially varied phase, amplitude, and angular momenta. Nevertheless, the reconfigurable control over structured light fields for advanced multimode nonlinear photonics remains a grand challenge. Here, we propose the concept of nonlinear geometric phase in an emerging ferroelectric nematic fluid, of which the second-order nonlinear susceptibility carries spin-d

We report an electrically actuated, low-loss nonvolatile optical switch based on the phase-change material (PCM) Sb2Se3 integrated on a silicon nitride (Si3N4) platform. The device is fabricated using an 8-in. Wafer-scale process flow, demonstrating the feasibility of scalable manufacturing for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). By employing adaptive voltage and transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) microheaters, reversible switching between the amorphous and crystalline states is achieved with an endurance exceeding 140 million switching cycles, establishing a new benchmark for nonvolatile int

Crystalline materials exhibiting programmable optical anisotropy are of great interest for advanced photonic applications but remain challenging. In this study, we introduce a coordination-driven approach that significantly enhances optical anisotropy by transforming a loosely packed molecular crystal (crystal-1) into a chiral metal-organic framework (MOF) (crystal-2). This structural transformation leads to a more than 20-fold increase in birefringence (Δn = 0.226 at 546 nm) and activates a measurable second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity. First-principles calculations suggest that the ob

Using conventional scintillation detection, the fundamental limit in positron emission tomography (PET) time resolution is strongly dependent on the inherent temporal variances generated during the scintillation process, yielding an intrinsic physical limit for the coincidence time resolution of around 100 ps. On the other hand, modulation mechanisms of the optical properties of a material exploited in the optical telecommunications industry can be orders of magnitude faster. In this paper we borrow from the concept of optics pump-probe measurement to for the first time study whether ionizing

Integrated photonic devices play a key role in modern optical communications, of which optical resonators are important fundamental structures. This work proposes and experimentally demonstrates compact integrated photonic devices based on a traveling wave-like Fabry-Perot (TW-like FP) resonator(s) coupled with waveguides. Add-drop filters based on a single TW-like FP resonator have been realized with a high drop efficiency and the same output direction for the through and drop ports. Particularly, their transmission response can be either symmetric Lorentzian or asymmetric Fano line shape, th

The realization of nonlinear photonic circuits to achieve the control of light-by-light is contingent upon a strong nonlinear response that can be captured in a guided-wave geometry. There remains a need to further scale down waveguides while maintaining a strong nonlinear response. In this study, we report second-harmonic generation and optical parametric generation using the second-order nonlinear response in an 80 nm thick CdS nanowire subwavelength waveguide. Moreover, our three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations demonstrate that it is possible to enhance the cohe

Accurate and efficient prediction of the optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial for photonic applications but remains a challenging task due to discrepancies between theoretical and experimental approaches. Here, we present a physics-guided machine learning (ML) framework for accelerated screening of 2D materials. It combines first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and graph neural network models backed by experimental spectroscopic validation and Cauchy-model integration. Within this framework, we collected a database of more than 1000 monolayers

In this study, we propose and demonstrate a hardware-efficient photonic neural network processor utilizing low-rank approximation (LRA) in conjunction with mode-division multiplexing (MDM) techniques. By exploiting MDM, the architecture requires only a single optical source, substantially reducing the hardware complexity associated with multi-source systems. Through LRA, the proposed architecture integrates two single-mode Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) and four mode-insensitive MZIs to construct a 4 × 2 matrix with the rank of 1. Compared to previously photonic neural network processors

The rise of artificial intelligence has triggered exponential growth in data volume, demanding rapid and efficient processing. High-speed, energy-efficient, and parallel-scalable computing hardware is thus increasingly critical. We demonstrate a wafer-scale non-volatile photonic computing chip using topological modulators. Leveraging the GHz-speed electro-optic response and nonvolatility of ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films via topological photonic confinement, our chip enables 1,000× accelerated reconfiguration, near-zero static-power operation, and a computational densit

Monitoring neural activity and associating neural dynamics with the anatomical connectome are required to understand how the brain works. Neural dynamics are measured by electrophysiology and optical imaging. Since the discovery of the two-photon excitation phenomenon, significant progress has been made in deep imaging for capturing neural activity from numerous neurons in vivo. The development of two-photon microscopy is aimed to image neural activity from a large and deep region with high spatial (x, y, and z) and temporal (t) resolutions at a high signal-to-noise ratio. Imaging deep regions
