Acupuncture-related Digital Joint Infection Managed With Staged Surgery And Oral Antibiotic Therapy.

Acupuncture is generally considered safe; however, inadequate aseptic technique may result in infections involving the skin, soft tissue, bone, or joints. Gram-negative bacilli causing hand infections are uncommon and may present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly when multiple digits are involved. A 73-year-old woman developed progressive pain, swelling, and functional limitation of the right third and left fifth fingers approximately 1 month after acupuncture. Imaging suggested osteomyelitis with involvement of the interphalangeal joint. Separate sterile specimens were obtai

Peri-Implant Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC): Clinicopathological Features and Staging Issues.

Background: Eighty-five percent of peri-implant malignancies are oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs), and most of them are misdiagnosed as peri-implantitis because of their clinical and radiological presentation; few studies have focused on addressing and solving the diagnostic issues related to peri-implant OSCCs. Objectives: The study aimed to describe the clinicopathological features of peri-implant OSCCs and to report the staging issues related to the diagnosis of these lesions. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients who received a diagnosis of and treatment for peri-

[Optimization of wound healing by correction of the oral microbiota at the stage of surgical treatment of tongue cancer].

Post-resection wound healing, oral microbiota composition and saliva lysozyme activity were assessed in 36 patients with tongue carcinoma before and after surgery with the local application of 2% solution of acid-diluted chitosan in the postoperative period. The microbiocenosis of the oral cavity before treatment in cancer patients was represented by conditionally pathogenic and pathogenic bacteria, whose number is more than 4 lg CFU/cm2, indicating dysbiosis; the lysozyme level was reduced, accounting for 25.4±8.5 µg/ml. After the radical hemi-glossectomy the reduction in the frequency and qu

Value of the oral swab for the molecular diagnosis of dogs in different stages of infection with Leishmania infantum.

This study was based on the need to employ a sensitive and specific method with samples that could be easily collected for diagnosing dogs infected with Leishmania infantum. To this end, we used real time-PCR (qPCR) to assess the value of the oral swab (OS) in detecting infected sick dogs (SD; n=62), including, for the first time, the analysis of apparently healthy infected dogs (AD; n=30), both from endemic areas for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). For comparison, we also evaluated the performance of the conjunctival swab (CS), blood (BL), lymph node (LN) and serology. We detected the presence o

Impact of obesity on the survival of patients with early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue.

BACKGROUND: Although obesity increases risk and negatively affects survival for many malignancies, the prognostic implications in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral tongue, a disease often associated with prediagnosis weight loss, are unknown. METHODS: Patients with T1-T2 oral tongue SCC underwent curative-intent resection in this single-institution study. All patients underwent nutritional assessment prior to surgery. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from measured height and weight and categorized as obese (≥ 30 kg/m(2) ), overweight (25-29.9 kg/m(2) ), or normal (18.5-24.9 kg/m(2

The effects of professional oral health care on patients in the subacute stage of emergent neurosurgical disorders.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of professional oral health care (POHC) on patients who were in the subacute stage of neurosurgical disorders. Forty subjects (26 male, 14 female) with acute cerebrovascular disorders or neurotrauma were randomly divided into two groups. The intervention group (n = 21) received POHC treatment by dental hygienists, and the control group (n = 19) did not. To evaluate the change in oral health status of the subjects, an oral examination was carried out at baseline and four weeks later. For the subjects in the intervention group, periodontal condition, oral h

Assessment of a new 18F-FDG PET/CT protocol in the staging of oral cavity carcinomas.

UNLABELLED: Because image fusion using (18)F-FDG PET/CT allows a better localization of the pathologic uptake, this modality has a greater sensitivity than PET alone in examining the head-neck region. However, examination of this area is particularly critical because the head and neck are close to other anatomic structures and because of the high physiologic uptake of the radiocompound. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of a new imaging protocol in the staging of oral carcinoma. METHODS: Thirty-four consecutive patients (21 women and 13 men; age range, 20-84 y) with untrea

Overexpression of COX-2 gene in oral cancer is independent of stage of disease and degree of differentiation.

The incidence of oral cancer is high in certain parts of the world including Southeast Asia. Smokeless tobacco and areca nut chewing is proposed as a possible factor. Cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) receptors are present on neoplastic cells and are proposed to participate in initiation, transformation, progression and metastasis of cancer. In a prospective case-controlled study, 42 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, 13 cases of oral premalignant lesions, and oral mucosa from 32 normal subjects were evaluated for COX-2 gene expression using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reac

HIV-related oral lesions, demographic factors, clinical staging and anti-retroviral use.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of HIV-related oral lesions (HIV-OL) between two health centers for HIV in Mexico City and to analyze the factors that, in addition to combined antiretroviral therapy (CART) and low CD4(+), may be associated with possible differences in prevalence. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was performed between January 2000 and February 2003 at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ), a specialized referral center for HIV/AIDS patients and the Clínica Especializada Condesa (CE

MRI T staging of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity: radiological-pathological correlation.

Fifty patients with primary or suspected recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity were examined pre-operatively with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine the tumour stage. Pathological correlation was available in all cases. Twenty-five of 35 patients with primary disease were correctly staged (MR Tstage 0-4). In another four patients there was good size correlation between MR and pathology, but two cases had false positive MR interpretation of bone invasion. MRI has proved accurate at excluding the presence of bone invasion (negative predictive value 97%), but a positive

Oral frailty, appetite and dietary variety in late-stage older adults: A cross-sectional study (the STudy of lAte-stage oldeR adulTs in Tottori; START Tottori).

AIM: Efforts to combat frailty and preserve good health in older adults have highlighted oral frailty as an early indicator of overall frailty. Individuals showing oral frailty are at an elevated risk of insufficient nutritional intake compared with those without oral frailty; however, underlying mechanisms remain poorly explored. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to examine the link between oral frailty and undernutrition, especially regarding poor appetite and low dietary diversity. METHODS: The analysis included 2727 late-stage older adults (mean age 79.9 ± 4.3 years) who underwent d

Identification of Stage-Specific microRNAs that Govern the Early Stages of Sequential Oral Oncogenesis by Strategically Bridging Human Genetics with Epigenetics and Utilizing an Animal Model.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a highly prevalent and aggressive malignancy, with mortality rates reaching 60%, mainly due to its excessive diagnostic delay. MiRNAs, a class of crucial epigenetic gene-expression regulators, have emerged as potential diagnostic biomarkers, with >200 molecules exhibiting expressional dysregulation in OSCC. We had previously established an in silico methodology for the identification of the most disease-specific molecules by bridging genetics and epigenetics. Here, we identified the stage-specific miRNAs that govern the asymptomatic early stages of oral t

Integrative prognostic modeling and mediation analysis of recurrence risk in extremely early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Despite complete surgical resection, recurrence remains a substantial challenge in patients with early-stage oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSSC). Conventional TNM staging does not fully capture the biological heterogeneity underlying relapse. This study aimed to develop an individualized recurrence-prediction model integrating clinicopathologic, immune, and spatial factors, and to evaluate the potential mediating role of perineural invasion (PNI). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 451 patients with stage I-II OSCC treated at Xiangya Hospital between 2018 and 2025. Twenty-three

Association Between Oral Frailty and Body Mass Index in Late-Stage Older Adults Stratified by Sarcopenia Status.

OBJECTIVES: Oral frailty is associated with sarcopenia and underweight; however, its relationship with sarcopenic obesity remains unclear. This cross-sectional study investigated the associations between oral frailty and body mass index (BMI) categories (underweight/obesity), stratified by sarcopenia status. METHODS: Data were obtained from dental checkups for 3829 older adults in Tottori, Japan (1489 men and 2340 women, mean age: 80.1 ± 4.3 years). Participants were divided into sarcopenia risk and non-sarcopenia groups by using the Yubi-Wakka test and then further subdivided by BMI into und
