Carcinoid tumors arise from the gastrointestinal tract or the bronchial tree, and tumors of either origin produce symptoms locally or secrete amines that produce a carcinoid syndrome systemically. Metastatic carcinoid tumors to the orbit are rare and, thus, present a special problem in diagnosis and treatment. We describe a case of metastatic orbital carcinoid that presented itself 6 years prior to the discovery of the primary ileal lesion. This case report describes the unusual presentation, reviews previously published data, and addresses controversial opinions regarding therapy.

Trauma is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Due to its anatomy and position in the facial skeleton, the orbit becomes a region susceptible to trauma which may also involve the penetration of foreign bodies (FBs). These events can have serious repercussions depending on their extent due to the proximity of the orbit with other noble structures of the face and skull. Because of this, a system of prehospital management of traumas must be established, in order to promote a better prognosis for patients. The present study aims to report the case of a patient suffering from a motorcycle

A healthy middle-aged man sustained extensive burns after a motor vehicle accident, including fourth-degree burns to the ocular adnexa. He had bilateral eyelid necrosis with complete tissue loss to the orbital rim. Progressive corneal thinning occurred bilaterally despite frequent lubrication, weekly amniotic membrane placement, and a Gunderson flap, ultimately requiring evisceration of his OS. In accordance with family wishes to perform all interventions for the OD, he underwent ocular surface reconstruction with levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) and inferior oblique (IO) muscle flaps, suppl

The authors report their experience with the use of Integra® dermal substitute, in combination with a thin skin graft, following an orbital exenteration. The clinical case described relates to a 42-year-old gentleman with an ulcerative retractile lesion of the right lower eyelid. Histopathological examination diagnosed a moderately differentiated epidermoid carcinoma infiltrating the orbit. Total exenteration was necessary as well as secondary radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Rehabilitation of the exenterated socket was performed by inserting an Integra® patch, followed by an additional thi

PURPOSE: Orbital exenteration of periocular tumors complicated by orbital invasion is a heavy burden for patients and leads to disfiguring cosmesis and loss of vision. Here, we report our experience with globe-sparing surgery in a series of patients with periocular malignancies other than basal cell carcinoma (BCC), all exhibiting anterior orbital invasion.
METHODS: In this consecutive case series, we examined medical records of all patients between 2000 and 2018 with periocular malignancies (other than BCC) invading the anterior orbit (without extraocular muscle or scleral invasion) treated

Orbital exenteration refers to the surgical removal of the entire eyeball and its surrounding periorbital structures. The extent of surgical ablation is individualized for each patient and may include removal of periorbital skin, adnexal soft tissue, periorbita, extraocular muscles, orbital fat, the globe, the optic nerve, 1 or more of the bony orbital walls, and the paranasal sinuses (Ophthalmic Oncology 2011; 285). An external approach of orbital exenteration involves retracting the orbital contents within a nonexpandable bony orbit. Orbital pressure would be more raised for patients with or

Orbital teratomas are rare embryonic tumors composed of a wide diversity of tissues derived from the three germinal layers. The presenting features include, a healthy newborn with extreme unilateral proptosis; marked stretching of the eyelids over a tense, fluctuating mass, with elongation of the palpebral fissure; enlargement of the bony orbit (two to three times normal size) with subsequent nasal and malar deformities; and transillumination of all or part of the orbital mass. Commonly the eye is normally developed but often vision is not preserved either due to exposure or secondary optic at

INTRODUCTION: Insufficient orbital volume in an anophthalmic socket is a major problem for the placement of an ocular prosthesis. This study reports the outcomes of the use of autologous pericranium graft in association with a large primary or secondary orbital implant in patients with a contracted socket and large orbital volume deficit.
METHODS: This was a retrospective single-institution study. Participants were 13 patients with contracted socket, volume deficit, and insufficient conjunctiva to cover the new implant divided into two groups, A (n = 3) and B (n = 10), according to the baseli

A survey of 198 patients (210 eyes) with intraocular or intraorbital foreign bodies is presented. Most were males between 16 and 30 years of age, and 6.1% of cases were bilateral. The commonest cause was a flying particle while using a hand hammer, followed by fragments of bomb and mine blasts. Intraorbital foreign bodies occurred in 78 eyes and intraocular foreign bodies in 132 eyes. Irreparable damage caused 13 eyes (6.2%) to be enucleated. Ten eyes developed severe endophthalmitis or panophthalmitis requiring evisceration. One hundred and thirty-four (63.8%) foreign bodies were removed, and

A 30-year-old male, who underwent previous pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil tamponade due to endogenous endophthalmitis originated from Klebsiella liver abscess, was referred for evisceration. At 2 months after vitrectomy with silicon oil tamponade, conjunctival chemosis and ocular pain were aggravated. Diffuse eyelid swelling and large subconjunctival mass with lipid droplets were noted. On MRI examination, subconjunctival mass and intra- and extraconal orbital mass around superior rectus muscle were observed. Excision of subconjunctival and orbital mass was performed. Histopathologic e

We present the case of a 56-year-old man who developed a neoplasm of epithelioid histology in his anophthalmic left orbit 21 years after he underwent enucleation for a spindle cell iris melanoma. The recurrent tumour was managed by orbital exenteration. Neither further recurrence nor metastasis was diagnosed over a 5-year follow-up period. This case, along with five other similar cases in the literature,1-3 emphasises the importance of long-term follow-up after treatment of iris melanoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: It has been argued that levator function in anophthalmic patients is reduced, but no detailed report on this topic has been issued. This study was undertaken to investigate measured levator function in anophthalmic patients, and to determine how measured values are related to prosthesis size.
METHODS: Unilateral anophthalmic patients with no significant ptosis, and no history of trauma or surgery to orbit or eyelid were recruited. Levator function was measured with patients wearing their prosthesis, test prosthesis of different heights, and no prosthesis.
RESULTS: Thirty-two

The hydroxyapatite orbital implant was first released for use as an orbital implant in humans in August 1989. It has been shown to be well tolerated, providing good motility of the artificial eye with a low complication rate when used as a primary implant. This prospective study evaluated the hydroxyapatite orbital implant used as both a primary and a secondary implant. Sixty patients were implanted between October 1992 and November 1994, 28 being implanted as a primary procedure at the time of enucleation or evisceration, and 32 as a secondary procedure. Seven patients underwent second-stage

PURPOSE: To study a new surgical option of primary placement of a hydroxyapatite-coated sleeve into the Bioceramic implant during enucleation or evisceration.
DESIGN: Retrospective, observational case series.
METHODS: A standard enucleation or evisceration was performed, followed by the preplacement of a hydroxyapatite-coated sleeve into the Bioceramic implant. Care must be taken to ensure the sleeve has been positioned centrally when the implant is put inside the orbital socket. Complications such as sleeve exposure, Bioceramic implant exposure, and infection were closely observed.
RESULTS

PURPOSE: Orbital cellulitis is a potentially blinding and life-threatening condition. There are little published data on the incidence of orbital cellulitis and little is known about the differences between children and adults affected. The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence, aetiology, management and outcome of orbital cellulitis in children and adults in Scotland.
METHODS: This study was a 1-year prospective observational study using the Scottish Ophthalmic Surveillance Unit reporting system among Scottish ophthalmologists.
RESULTS: The response rate from ophthalmologists

A 30 year-old male came to us for correcting his severe left enophthalmos five months after a facial trauma in a traffic accident. CT scan of his left orbit showed a greatly increased orbital volume, which was resulted from the incomplete reduction of left zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fracture, unrepaired medial and lateral walls, and improper restoration of the orbital floor with a silicone sheet. Also, the decreased ocular volume, due to the evisceration of the ruptured eyeball with intraocular silicone ball implantation, contributed to the patient's enophthalmos. Because the patient re
